Spl camps, help desks to boost enrolment for higher education
Madurai: School heads and education department officials are stepping up measures to push up enrolment of Class XII pass-out govt school students in higher education institutions. Special grievance camps and help desks/special cells organised by district administrations offer direct guidance and support for these students, especially those from economically weaker backgrounds. Last year, Madurai district achieved around 69% enrolment in higher education. District chief education officer A Renuka told TOI that 'Kalluri Kanavu' programme held recently had a good reach. "Teachers are monitoring students who completed Class XII and are helping them in applying for colleges and universities. A special cell/help desk has also been set up at Madurai collectorate and students who face difficulties can approach them. In case of financial issues, we are connecting with banks to provide guidance and solutions," she added. In Dindigul, district collector S Saravanan presided over a special grievance camp on Wednesday exclusively for govt school students attempting to go for higher education. "Such special grievance camps will be conducted once in 15 days till October. Students can get guidance on applying for higher education and on availing education loans or solutions to any issues that may hinder them," he said. A total of 245 petitions were submitted at Wednesday's special grievance camp in Dindigul. Nadhiya, a Class XII student from Vellodu who scored 355 marks, said the income her mother gets as an anganwadi cook was far from enough for pursuing higher education. "I applied to study DPharm, a paramedical course, at a private college but the fees was Rs 65,000 a year. The collector examined my petition and assured to help me get a full scholarship," she added. Virudhunagar district, which achieved a Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) of around 95% last year and topped the state, is organizing a special grievance camp on May 31.

District level control room established in Thoothukudi to guide class XII students into higher education
Thoothukudi District Collector K. Elambahavath on Monday announced that, to ensure that all the students who have passed class XII examination in Thoothukudi district pursue higher education, a district level control room comprising 20 teachers has been established. As part of the school education department's initiative for the 2024-2025 academic year, 'college dream' (Kalluri Kanavu) a higher education guidance programme under the 'Naan Mudhalvan' scheme was conducted on Monday in Thoothukudi. The event was conducted for motivating students who have passed their class XII exams to pursue college. Mr. Elambahavath who presided over the event, emphasised the importance of higher education among the students. He said that the 'college dream' (Kalluri Kanavu) programme had already been conducted in April, even before the class XII exams results were released, with the motive of giving students first hand exposure to various colleges, their academic programmes, facilities and infrastructure. He added that based on the data from the Tamil Nadu school Education Department, 1,408 students had been identified in the district, who needed special attention. These include school dropouts, economically weaker students and those who had lost their parents. Out of the 1,408 students, 762 had already applied for various college courses, while the remaining 646 students were yet to apply, he noted. Mr. Elambahavath stressed that the headmasters and teachers must work together to identify these students, explain to them the significance of higher education and ensure they apply to college. He added, 'our target is to achieve 100% enrolment of all students who have passed class XII into higher education. He further mentioned that the district level control room for higher education assistance would guide the students and ensure that they had chosen courses that match their score. District Chief Educational Officer Ganeshamoorthy, and officials from educational and other departments were present at the event.

2k students get career guidance
Madurai: Around 2,000 students who completed Class XII state board exams from Madurai schools received career guidance from experts at 'Kalluri Kanavu' event on Wednesday, held under Naan Mudhalvan scheme . District collector M S Sangeetha, who inaugurated the programme at Lady Doak College, encouraged students to make use of various schemes and benefits to enrol for higher education . She distributed free career guidance books under Naan Mudhalvan scheme, including updated details of courses and subjects, job opportunities in various fields, govt-run colleges/universities, competitive exams, and govt were set up by colleges along with school education department. Experts, including heads of educational institutions, addressed students regarding available courses and careers they could pursue. Students were urged to seek guidance and support from teachers if they were worried about financial constraints. "I want to prepare for competitive exams for govt jobs in the long run. Through the career guidance programme, we learned a lot we didn't know," said Barani Sri, a student of a Madurai corporation education department officials said career guidance will continue to be provided at the school level throughout May. Teachers will be closely monitoring and supporting enrolment of students who passed Class XII in higher education.
