Goa Inc supports need for transport aggregators in state

Panaji: Backing govt's Goa transport aggregator guidelines, Goa's industry bodies stated that app-based taxi services will improve workforce mobility and create an investor-friendly environment in Goa. The Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Verna Industrial Estate, Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG), Assocham, and other industry representatives mentioned that thousands of workers and professionals employed in the state require 'dependable transport' for their daily commute. 'Across sectors—be it tourism, manufacturing, real estate, retail, logistics, or services—businesses in Goa are increasingly dependent on a workforce that requires dependable and safe transport options,' said GCCI president Shrinivas Dempo. The Verna Industries Association noted that the lack of app-based taxi services has posed challenges in terms of accessibility, especially for shift workers, women employees, and those travelling from Goa's hinterland. The industry bodies expressed that the transport department's guidelines strike a well-considered balance between enabling digital transport innovation and protecting the livelihoods of local taxi drivers. The transport department's guidelines require the aggregators to pay drivers the full govt-notified fare, mandating timely payments while also offering health insurance and vehicle subsidies. 'We urge govt to implement the guidelines in a time-bound manner and call upon all stakeholders to participate constructively in building a mobility ecosystem that meets the growing needs of Goa's industrial sector,' said Kalpak Arware, president of Verna Industries Association. Dempo stated that the introduction of taxi services will reduce the reliance on private vehicles, decongest roads, and lower pollution. Assocham Goa Council president Manguirish Pai Raiker urged the taxi operators to collaborate with govt and build a transport ecosystem.
