1 2 Madurai: The second additional district court (CBI cases) in Madurai on Thursday convicted four people including a former senior manager of Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) in Trichy district for sanctioning loans to fictitious self help groups (SHGs) without following proper procedures. It caused a loss of 3.38 crore to the bank. The first accused, B Ravichandran, was working as a senior manager in IOB, Chinthamani branch in Trichy district. Rajaram and Usha were office-bearers, and Kalpana and Lavanya were workers at an NGO called Kurinji Social Welfare Society in Trichy. The prosecution said Ravichandran conspired with the other accused and created fictitious SHGs with fictitious people as members and opened savings bank accounts in the name of groups. The SHGs availed loans ranging from 4.25 lakh to 5 lakh between June 2012 and March 2013. Ravichandran, without verifing the genuineness of the papers, and granted loans to 73 'SHGs' sponsored by Kurinji Social Welfare Society through Rajaram and Kalpana, thereby causing a wrongful loss of 3.38 crore for the bank. The judge convicted and sentenced Kalpana and Lavanya to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of 11 lakh each on them. The judge acquitted Usha from the case. The judge further directed CBI to collect the fine amount from the four accused by attaching their properties and selling them in a public auction. Ravichandran did not verify the existence of the SHGs and their members, nor the genuineness of the signatures of the members, and granted loans to 73 SHGs sponsored by Kurinji Social Welfare Society through Rajaram and Kalpana, thereby causing a wrongful loss of Rs 3.38 crore to the bank. Based on the complaint of bank authorities, the CBI, Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), Chennai, registered a case against Ravichandran, Rajaram, Usha, Kalpana, and Lavanya for offences under various sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act. The Additional District Judge, S Shunmugavel, convicted and sentenced Ravichandran to undergo seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 21 lakh on him. The judge convicted and sentenced Rajaram to undergo seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 29.63 lakh on him. The judge convicted and sentenced Kalpana and Lavanya to undergo three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 11 lakh each on them. The judge acquitted Usha in the case. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the incident took place on Sunday at Defence Society Ittehad area. Sudhair Dhun Raj had picked up his sister Kalpana, who works at a beauty parlour, and was en route to collect their youngest sibling when his motorcycle grazed Farooq's car. Farooq and his armed aides brutally thrash Raj, despite his apologies and Kalpana's pleas for mercy. An eyewitness, Muhammad Saleem, came forward, prompting the police to take action against Farooq, who owns a media production and distribution company. Initially hesitant to speak out, the siblings, residents of the impoverished Ranchore Lines area, decided to come forward after the FIR was filed based on Saleem's complaint. The FIR includes charges of issuing death threats, physical assault, harassment of a woman, and verbal abuse.

A media entrepreneur in Pakistan's Karachi was arrested on Monday for allegedly assaulting a Hindu man and his sister following a minor road accident, police said. The Karachi-based media entrepreneur has Salman Farooq. Along with Salman Farooq, his accomplices were also arrested late Monday in Karachi after video clips of the man being brutally beaten surfaced and caused an outrage on social media, according to a PTI news agency report. According to the First Information Report (FIR) cited in the report, the incident took place on Sunday at Defence Society Ittehad area. Sudhair Dhun Raj had picked up his sister, Kalpana, who works at a beauty parlour, and was en route to collect their youngest sibling when his motorcycle brushed against Salman Farooq's car. Farooq and his armed aides then thrash Raj, despite his apologies and Kalpana's pleas for mercy. Muhammad Saleem, a witness, reportedly came forward, prompting the police to take action against Farooq, who owns a media production and distribution company. The news agency reported that the siblings were initially hesitant to speak out, however, on they later decided to come forward after the FIR was filed based on Saleem's complaint. The siblings are residents of the impoverished Ranchore Lines area. The FIR filed in the case includes charges of issuing death threats, physical assault, harassment of a woman, and verbal abuse. In an unrelated incident, a woman belonging to the minority Hindu community in Pakistan was allegedly kidnapped, forcibly converted to Islam and married off to a Muslim man, her family claimed last week. The abducted woman's family has appealed to the government and authorities to recover her in Dighri area of Mirpurkhas in the southern Sindh province on Wednesday, May 28. The husband of the woman and her four children came to the offices of the Darawar Ittehad Pakistan in Mirpurkhas to plead their case, according to PTI. Shiva Kaachi, who heads an NGO which fights for the welfare and rights of minorities particularly Hindus, said the woman was kidnapped, then forcibly converted to Islam and married off to a Muslim man named Shehbaz Khashkheli.
