US-Philippine military exercise joined by Japan, South Korea forces
TOKYO -- The U.S. and the Philippines began their annual Kamandag military exercise Monday, with Japan Ground Self-Defense Force units and the South Korean marines participating for the first time, illustrating the increasing importance of multilateral security frameworks as Washington urges its Asian allies to become less dependent on it. China's military buildup and maritime expansion have prompted Washington to strengthen security cooperation with Tokyo and Manila. In March, Philippine, U.S. and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force vessels conducted tactical training and other joint exercises in the South China Sea, advocating "freedom of navigation and overflight."

PH, US marines open Kamandag exercise; NMESIS to be used in training
The Philippine Marine Corps (PMC) and the United States Marine Corps (USMC) officially opened Monday their Kamandag Exercise for this year with the participation of other countries. At a press conference, PMC commandant Major General Arturo Rojas said a total of around 4,000 participants are expected to join the training, which is set to be completed on June 6. 'We have around 2,000 for the PMC side and around the same number with our USMC counterparts,' Rojas said. The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, Republic of Korea Marine Corps, and United Kingdom Armed Forces will also participate in Kamandag. Meanwhile, the Netherlands, Bahrain, Canada, New Zealand, among others, will serve as observers. The US' missile system Navy-Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System (NMESIS) will be used in training, according to Rojas. 'We'll be using the NMESIS also. Again, be able to learn and sustain what we have, what we did in the past Balikatan,' he said. The NMESIS will be deployed to the northern Luzon area, according to USMC's Marine Rotational Force - Darwin 25.3 commanding officer Colonel Jason Armas. 'These are scenario-driven exercises where we will conduct operations with the NMESIS, which is a great capability. It extends the commander's operational reach. And what it really does is it continues to validate Force Design 2030 for the USMC,' Armas said. 'And I would argue that it truly enhances the archipelagic coastal defense concept for the Philippine Armed Forces and really moving forward in modernization,' he added. Japan ground force to train with S Korean marines for 1st time
The Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force said Tuesday it will conduct training with South Korean marines for the first time in early June on the occasion of a multinational defense exercise in the Philippines. The move comes as the two countries are enhancing their defense cooperation bilaterally as well as trilaterally with the United States amid North Korea's nuclear and missile development and China's maritime assertiveness. Last year, Japanese and South Korea defense ministers agreed to boost exchanges, including between their troops. Japan and South Korea have already held joint training between their maritime and air services, including under the trilateral framework involving the United States. The GSDF's Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade, which specializes in defending remote islands, and the South Korean Marine Corps will join the annual Kamandag multinational exercise, led by the Philippine Marine Corps and U.S. Marines to strengthen allied and partner capabilities. The exercise will simulate a tsunami disaster, with the GSDF's and Philippine vessels, having South Korean troops aboard them, planning to land on shore and engage in the search and rescue of other members. They will then transport the rescued members to hospitals by the U.S. military's Osprey transport aircraft. The British military is also scheduled to take part in this year's Kamandag, running from May 26 to June 6 across the Philippines, according to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. © KYODO
