80-boat convoy sails Sungai Pahang to mark Merdeka month
PEKAN: A convoy of more than 80 boats took to Sungai Pahang today to celebrate Merdeka month, with participants from several villages proudly flying the Jalur Gemilang.
The Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang programme, organised by the Pekan parliamentary constituency, began at the Kampung Temai jetty at 9am. It featured villagers, government agencies including the Fire and Rescue Department, police, and civil defence force, and 20 privately owned boats from Temerloh, Bera, and Maran. The event ended at Pekan Riverfront at about 11.30am.
Kampung Temai Tengah Village Development and Safety Committee chairman, Md Azmi Ali, said the programme fostered patriotism among the community. Participants stopped at several villages along the river to meet residents.
"Every participant is proud to fly the Jalur Gemilang along Sungai Pahang, a river not only vital for the locals' livelihood but also rich in history," he said. "This programme strengthens grassroots patriotism and fosters closer ties between participants."
Participant Hairuldin Saidi, 43, said the event encouraged cooperation among villagers while instilling a sense of environmental responsibility, particularly in keeping the river clean.
He said the programme served a dual purpose: strengthening community ties with government agencies while sparking patriotic spirit among the people.
