KDOT changes weekend closure plans for I-135 in Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has updated its construction plans for Interstate 135 in north Wichita, scaling back a full weekend closure that was originally scheduled. Flooded in Butler County? Here's how to report damage Southbound I-135 will still close this weekend for pavement patching and barrier wall adjustments, but northbound lanes will remain open — a change from earlier announcements. The updated plan means that starting at 5 a.m. Saturday, June 7, southbound I-135 will close from the K-254 interchange to just past the K-96 interchange. Several ramps will also be closed, including: Westbound K-96 to southbound I-135 K-254 to southbound I-135 The loop ramp from southbound I-235 to North Broadway All affected lanes and ramps are expected to reopen by Sunday afternoon, June 8. A full closure of I-135 in both directions is now expected next weekend, on Saturday, June 14, to allow for additional pavement work and a bridge deck pour, weather permitting. Motorists are advised to follow posted detour signs, allow extra travel time, and use caution in the work zone. For real-time traffic updates, visit or call 5-1-1. KDOT says this change in schedule is meant to minimize traffic disruption while allowing construction crews to continue needed repairs. Kansas gov. issues state of disaster emergency due to widespread flooding

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has issued a verbal state of disaster declaration Tuesday, due to recent rainfall that is causing widespread flooding across the state. Kelly issued the declaration shortly after 2 p.m. on June 3, saying heavy rainfall is causing flooding and flash flooding across much of Kansas. Her proclamation will help mobilize resources to provide people with help at this time. 'Flood waters can be deceptive; and it only takes 18 inches of water to float a car,' Kelly said. 'If you are traveling in areas with heavy rainfall, I encourage you to remember one simple phrase if there is water on the roadway: 'Turn around, don't drown.' The Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM) is partially activating the State Emergency Operations Center in Topeka to monitor flooding, assist counties with any needs they might have at this time and coordinate state resources. Kelly encourages people to check road conditions before leaving their homes by using KanDrive.
