Kansas cops must meet quotas for Click It or Ticket grant funds

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Law enforcement in Kansas 'must conduct enforcements' to be eligible for Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) grant funds during statewide Click It or Ticket campaigns. Starting on May 18, the TPD kicked off its Memorial Day Click It or Ticket traffic enforcement campaign. The campaign will last until June 1. City Communications Director Dan Garrett said the Click It or Ticket is funded through a Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant. STEP launches four campaigns annually to increase seat belt use and enforce impaired and distracted driving laws, according to KDOT. The campaigns typically happen around Thanksgiving, New Year's Eve, Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays. 27 News reached out to KDOT to see what the requirements are for contracted law enforcement to receive those STEP grant funds. How much rain did NE Kansas get on Monday? KDOT Chief Public Information Officer Philip Harris said officers must conduct 'enforcements' while on overtime and are expected to make at least two contacts per hour of overtime submitted. He said that contacts aren't necessarily writing tickets, but rather the number of drivers officers make contact with. 'Those contacts may result in a range of outcomes from education all the way up to citations and arrests,' Harris wrote. FBI Director Kash Patel says he will pledge more agents to Kansas, Topeka For law enforcement agencies to receive STEP grant funds they must: Conduct enforcements on overtime during the specified enforcement periods, which are defined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Have a minimum expectation of two contacts per hour of overtime submitted. Provide activity reports and hours worked that are eligible for overtime reimbursement. Earlier this week, Riley County Police Department Director Brian Peete joined the 27 News morning show to talk about how his police department is participating in the Click It or Ticket campaign. Highway shutdown to create nearly 70-mile detour in central Kansas

COUNCIL GROVE (KSNT) – Drivers in part of central Kansas will have to deal with a lengthy detour route this summer for a highway project that is set to last for months. The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) released its plans to shut down part of K-177 Highway on KanDrive earlier this month. The closure runs from Council Grove south to Strong City in Morris and Chase Counties. KDOT workers will close K-177 between these two cities starting at 8 a.m. on Monday, June 16, according to KanDrive. The closure is projected to end on Friday, Nov. 14. Three disgraced Kansas priests named in new abuse reports Road crews will reconstruct the first four miles of K-177 to the south of Council Grove in the summer and into the fall of this year. KDOT will close K-177 to accommodate this project, leading to a long detour. Drivers trying to reach Council Grove from Strong City will be directed west on U.S. 50 to K-150, west on K-150 to U.S. 56/U.S. 77, then north on U.S. 56/U.S. 77 to Herington before taking U.S. 56 east to Council Grove. Southbound drivers will follow the same route but in reverse to reach Strong City. KDOT said drivers should expect a delay of about 45 minutes added to travel time. Google Maps shows the detour route is around 70 miles in length and will take about an hour to complete.
