NFR leverages tech to overcome weather-releated challenges

Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has implemented cutting-edge technological solutions to address weather-related challenges including landslides , drainage problems and embankment stability in Assam's Lumding-Badarpur hill section under the Lumding Wednesday, NFR chief public relations officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma stated that this mountainous region, extending across Dima Hasao and Cachar districts, serves as a crucial link connecting Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and Barak Valley to mainland India. "Having a difficult topography and encountering severe monsoon conditions, the route becomes quite difficult to access due to natural hazards, posing safety issues to the rail route specifically," said address these issues, NFR has conducted aerial and geophysical assessments covering an 80-kilometre stretch of the mountainous terrain."The techniques used in this section are advanced drone- based LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), high resolution aerial imaging and electromagnetic surveys," he geophysical assessment technology enables detection of underground faults, soil saturation zones and subsurface water accumulation, allowing early identification of potential landslide-prone areas and unstable Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) has been introduced at key locations to ensure tunnel safety and structural integrity during peak monsoon periods.

Survey for new railway line in Sikkim sanctioned

GUWAHATI The Ministry of Railways has sanctioned a final location survey for a new railway line in Sikkim. The Guwahati-headquartered Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) will conduct the ₹2.25 crore survey for the project, which is envisaged to connect Melli, on the State's boundary with West Bengal, to Dentam on the India-Nepal border, a spokesperson of the railway zone said. Amid rising security concerns RPF of NF Railway enhances vigilance, recovers firearms

Guwahati (Assam) [India], May 9 (ANI): The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of North Frontier Railway (NFR) has significantly strengthened its security protocols at stations, trains, and railway premises amid the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. With an increased focus on passenger safety in the current national security environment, these measures are designed to address threats such as child trafficking, human trafficking, drug incidents, stone pelting and other untoward events. Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, CPRO of Northeast Frontier Railway, said that, RPF, in close collaboration with railway authorities, is actively enhancing security and surveillance across the entire network. This includes coordinated joint patrolling with the Government Railway Police (GRP) and local law enforcement agencies to ensure a secure environment at railway stations and along track routes. 'As part of its intensified security efforts, NFR has successfully conducted coordinated mock drills at important railway stations in collaboration with district administrations. These drills, which included air siren alerts and blackout protocols, were aimed at testing and enhancing emergency response preparedness. In line with its commitment to passenger safety, NFR has reinforced women's security by deploying strengthened Anti-Crime Patrol (ACP) units and dedicated women's security teams. Anti-Trafficking Operations have also been intensified to curb illegal activities and safeguard the dignity and security of all travellers,' Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said. He further said that, in a recent incident, on May 8, while carrying out routine duties on Tripura Sundari Express, RPF of NFR displayed exceptional vigilance. During an empty general coach inspection, they found two unclaimed bags on the upper berth. Upon investigation, the bags contained eight pistols and 16 magazines. RPF team immediately secured the firearms and transferred them to the RPF Post at Agartala for further legal action. Later that day, the Director General (Intelligence), Tripura, visited Agartala Railway Station to review the incident and the successful seizure. During the inspection, the DG personally appreciated RPF Jawans Anjan Pal and Ashim Aich for their quick and effective action in ensuring railway security. 'NFR remains fully dedicated to enhancing the safety and security of passengers and railway assets. Continuous improvements are being made to strengthen security measures in response to evolving challenges. NF Railway Boosts Passenger Safety With CCTV Surveillance At Level Crossing Gates

Guwahati (Assam): In a significant step toward enhancing passenger safety and ensuring seamless train operations, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has undertaken an initiative to strengthen surveillance at Level Crossing (LC) gates through the installation of high-resolution CCTV cameras. Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, CPRO of Northeast Frontier Railway, said that to eliminate risks associated with train movement at level crossings, CCTV cameras have been installed at 28 LC gates across key divisions. "These include 4 in Alipurduar Division, 17 in Lumding Division and 7 in Tinsukia Division. These are enabling railway staff to proactively manage gate operations and prevent potential hazards, such as unauthorised access or obstruction by vehicles. This initiative is part of NFR's broader strategy to reduce human error, minimise incidents at crossings and ensure secure, uninterrupted train movements. The CCTV coverage at major intersections enhances vigilance, speeds up emergency responses and supports data-driven safety management. Additionally, 9 Internet Protocol-based CCTV cameras have been installed at Railway Protection Force (RPF) posts across Katihar, Alipurduar, Lumding and Tinsukia divisions," he said. The CPRO further said that, moreover, 6 cameras have been installed at IBS (Intermediate Block Signalling) huts in the Hasimara - Kalchini section of Alipurduar Division to strengthen surveillance at remote signalling locations. "As part of its infrastructure modernisation efforts, NFR has implemented an interlocking system at important LC gates across its divisions, ensuring that the gates are fully synchronised with train movements. This system allows barriers to operate in direct coordination with approaching trains, guaranteeing smooth and safe crossings. By integrating this technology, NFR optimises operational safety and provides enhanced protection for both passengers and track users," he said. Sharma also said that, in addition, 29 Sliding Boom Barriers have been introduced at LC gates across Katihar, Alipurduar, Lumding and Tinsukia, providing additional layer of safety. "Further, Rubberised Surfacing is being introduced at 15 LC gates in the Lumding Division to further enhance infrastructure and ensure safer crossings. This upgrade will reduce the risk of vehicle skidding and ensure safer, more efficient crossings for road users, improving the overall road track interface. The Northeast Frontier Railway remains deeply committed to safeguarding lives and upholding the highest standards of operational safety. These initiatives reflect NFR's dedicated efforts to modernise infrastructure, enhance security and provide a secure, seamless and comfortable travel experience for all passengers," the CPRO said.
