Rally king Karamjit claims Jempol crown
KUALA LUMPUR: Rally great Karamjit Singh proved he remains the man to beat after winning the opening round of the Malaysia Rally Championship (MRC) in Jempol yesterday (Aug 3).
Driving his favourite Proton Gen 2, Karamjit and navigator Daveender Singh emerged victorious in the open category with a time of one hour, six minutes and 14 seconds.
Sutan Mustaffa Salihin-Kamarul Anuar Mohd Razzali, driving a Subaru Impreza WRX, came in second (1:08:54s) while Saladin Mazlan-Arish Qutb Ahmad Khan came in third (1:15:41s) in their Mini Austin.
The two-day event, dubbed the Rally of Jempol, was organised by Millennium Motorsports Adventures Club (MMAC) and sanctioned by the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM).
Karamjit, 63, was pleased to take the win.
"It was a good start for us this season," said the former Production Car World Champion after the event.
"It was a tough rally for everyone, just finishing the rally itself was an achievement. We are grateful to the organisers for giving us a chance to once again compete."
Luck, however, was not on the side of the EastCoast Rallying (ECR) team as they suffered technical issues with their Subaru Impreza WRX. The ECR duo of Syakirin Razaki-Hazwan Fauzi, who had been eying a podium finish, settled for fifth place overall.
The next round of MRC will be held in Sepang in conjunction with the Malaysia Festival of Speed on Aug 15-17.
