Union minister Shobha launches training for women, transpeople

BENGALURU: Union Minister of State for MSME and Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje on Saturday launched a free auto-driving training programme for women and transgender individuals in Bengaluru. The initiative, jointly run by Bangalore Political Action Committee ( and CGI under its CSR programme, aims to empower over 100 individuals through skill development, financial literacy, and dignified livelihood support. The minister also announced the Centre's plans to extend social security benefits to workers in the unorganised sector, which comprises nearly 90 per cent of India's workforce. 'We are working to consolidate 29 labour laws into four codes, including the Social Security Code, to ensure economic and social protection for informal workers in sectors like agriculture, construction, and quick commerce,' Karandlaje said. The training programme includes a 60-day module covering driving skills, life skills, road safety, and financial education. It also facilitates driving licence acquisition, rental and fuel support, and access to auto-rickshaws through partnerships with financial institutions. 'This initiative reflects the government's vision of Nari Shakti and inclusive growth. Empowering women and transgender persons through skill development is critical to ensuring their economic independence,' Karandlaje added. The launch event was attended Srividya Natraj and Sarika Pradhan, Vice Presidents at CGI and many more. 'This is about transforming lives through mobility, while making Bengaluru's transport more gender-sensitive and accessible,' said Srividya.

Coir testing lab to come up in Pollachi: Union Minister

The Central government will set up a dedicated coir testing laboratory in Pollachi, Union Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje announced here on Saturday. Speaking at a seminar-cum-industry meet organised by the Coir Board, she said the lab will be established on five acres of land in Thippampatti village. It will focus on testing and certifying coir products for export, improving market access, and helping producers meet international benchmarks. The Minister noted that MSMEs across the country still lack adequate access to skilled labour and modern technology—both essential for the sector's growth. She urged stakeholders to engage the younger generation through Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and institutions like the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and to prioritise skilling and upskilling. She called for greater investment in research and development to diversify coir products, including value-added innovations such as coir plywood and activated carbon. The Minister assured the stakeholders that the government would bring in advanced technologies from across the world, responding to a key demand raised by industry associations during the meet. Stakeholders flag challenges Stakeholders from across the coir value chain flagged several challenges, including constraints in boosting exports, limited access to working capital and technology, the need for quality upgrades, and global pricing pressures. In response to industry appeals for policy support to blend coir fibre with banana waste, jute, bamboo, and other natural materials, Ms. Karandlaje said the Coir Industry Act, 1953, would be amended to allow such blending. She added that financial support under the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), including a 30% subsidy, would continue. She encouraged entrepreneurs to register on the Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UDYAM) and Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portals to access Central procurement benefits. Highlighting the underutilisation of coconut husk, she said only 50% is used in Tamil Nadu, 10% in Karnataka, and 12–15% in Kerala, while a significant share is still being burnt. She called for a joint effort by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the Coir Board, and the Coconut Development Board to generate value for coconut farmers. Later, speaking to reporters, the Minister criticised the Tamil Nadu government over electricity tariff hikes, saying they were adversely affecting the MSME sector — the second-largest employer in the country after agriculture. She also cited concerns over corruption, land and drug mafias, and governance issues in the State. Ms. Karandlaje demanded that the State release a white paper on what she called 'its financial crisis' and questioned the lack of accountability in public spending. Later in the evening, the Minister visited Agri Intex 2025 in Coimbatore and interacted with MSME and agri-entrepreneurs. She urged to focus on ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat food products to boost exports. Ends

Jaishankar on Tuesday, Karandlaje, who represents the Bangalore North parliamentary constituency, highlighted the severe crowding and long wait times at the existing passport centres located in Lalbagh and Marathahalli. 'Both PSKs are overwhelmed by high volumes of applicants, which is causing undue delays and inconvenience—especially for residents of northern Bengaluru,' she noted in her letter. She proposed that the new centre be established in northwestern Bengaluru, which would help reduce the burden on the existing facilities and improve service efficiency for passport-related services, including new applications, renewals, and documentation updates. MP urges for toll fare review In a separate communication, the minister also flagged issues concerning the recent toll hike on NICE Road, calling it arbitrary and burdensome. In a letter to Karnataka PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi, Karandlaje urged a review of the revised toll rates, which came into effect on July 1. 'Despite the steep toll fees, basic safety features are lacking on NICE Road—there are no proper road markings, accident zone reflectors, signboards, or adequate CCTV surveillance,' she pointed out, demanding that commuters receive value and safety for the tolls they pay.

Karnataka Congress government exposed from within: BJP's Karandlaje

New Delhi, June 24 (UNI) BJP leader Shobha Karandlaje on Tuesday tore into the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government, calling it a regime 'exposed from within' — citing a chorus of disgruntled Congress MLAs who she claimed have publicly highlighted financial chaos, policy paralysis, and a government crumbling under its own weight. 'This is not the BJP saying it — it's Congress' own MLAs pulling the curtain back,' Karandlaje declared. 'If Chief Minister Siddaramaiah says there's no money, then Minister Dr G Parameshwara himself has admitted the treasury is empty. But in the same breath, he says Rs 50 crore has already been released. Really? To whom? If that's true, why is your own MLA, Raju Kage, still asking where the funds are?' Referring to a spate of recent statements, Karandlaje said the Congress is speaking in multiple, conflicting voices. 'Raju Kage said he received a letter two years ago promising Rs 25 crore. But not a single rupee has been released till date. He is so fed up that he says he's ready to resign. This is a government that doesn't even trust its own MLAs.' She didn't stop there. Turning the spotlight on senior Congress MLA Gopalakrishna, Karandlaje quoted his public grievance: 'Since becoming an MLA, I haven't been able to get even a drainage line or a kilometre of road done.' She quipped, 'Is this what the Congress MLAs have been reduced to — powerless spectators in their own constituencies?' The BJP leader also flagged shocking revelations from Congress MLA BR Patil. 'He says houses were allotted in his constituency but he doesn't even know to whom. There was no Gram Sabha decision, no urban council resolution. If even MLAs are kept in the dark, what transparency are they talking about?' Wrapping up her fiery remarks, Karandlaje said the Congress' façade of unity has crumbled, and what's visible now is a house divided. 'When your own legislators are threatening to quit, clueless about funds, and complaining of zero development — you don't need the BJP to expose you. You're doing it yourself. Karnataka deserves better.' UNI BDN RN
