Patrick Mahomes breaks silence on Kareem Hunt's return to Kansas City Chiefs 6 years after assault video went viral: 'He isn't a bad person'
Star QB Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid weigh in on Kareem Hunt's controversial re-signing. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes , typically measured with his words, didn't hold back in offering support for running back Kareem Hunt's comeback. In September, amid an injury to Isiah Pacheco, the Chiefs made a surprising move by re-signing Hunt – six years after releasing him following a widely circulated video showing Hunt violently kicking a woman. Although he wasn't arrested, the incident led to Hunt stepping away and spending time with the Cleveland Browns. When the topic resurfaced on the team's docuseries The Kingdom, Mahomes chose to focus on growth and redemption. Mahomes believes one bad choice shouldn't define Hunt's career Although Patrick Mahomes usually keeps things low-key in interviews, he spoke openly about Kareem Hunt's past and his return to the Kansas City Chiefs. The quarterback made it clear he believes in second chances and sees Hunt as someone who is learning and growing. 'What he did was wrong, but I know in his heart he isn't a bad person,' Mahomes said. 'It's how you can become better and learn from them. I think that's something that he embraced. He wasn't going to let that one bad decision define who he is as a person.' Coach Andy Reid says Hunt 'learned a lesson' and deserved another chance Head coach Andy Reid joined Mahomes in expressing support for Hunt's return, sharing his belief in second chances. 'He [Kareem] learned a lesson,' Reid said, adding 'Too many people don't get a second chance, and then they go back and they start doing bad things. They don't even have an opportunity to be successful. He did wrong. He knew he did wrong. You can't do that. Somebody's gotta teach you that you can't do that. He paid for that. We probably all run into roadblocks somewhere. Some more drastic than others. He had to start over and do it the right way.' Kareem Hunt says he regrets past mistake and wants a fresh start Hunt himself also shared his thoughts, expressing regret over the events that led to his initial exit from Kansas City. On the same podcast episode, he admitted he wishes he could change how he handled the incident. 'So upset about the whole situation. I wish I could go back in time and handle it a lotta bit different.' Since his return to the Chiefs, Hunt has been a regular part of the offense. Last season, he played in 13 games, rushing for 728 yards and scoring seven touchdowns on 200 carries. Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt expresses his appreciation for training camp
Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt addressed reporters after practice on Thursday at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph. He discussed the importance of training camp and the work he had put in during the offseason. "I did the best I could, for sure, taking care of my body wasn't easy. But, I feel like later in the season, the playoffs started, really getting a groove and, it's hard to really simulate going out there and getting hit, training, and stuff like that." said Hunt, "My track coach isn't going to line up and tackle me or try to chase me down, or anything like that. It's a different type of speed out there from training by yourself and just working hard." The former Toledo standout was an essential part of the Chiefs' offense during Kansas City's run to Super Bowl LIX, and he is likely to be among the team's most impactful offensive playmakers next season. "I get to be around guys who push me (at training camp), guys who challenge me each and every day," said Hunt, "Instead of trying to push myself by myself, working out and staying in shape, and making sure I hold myself accountable." Last season, Hunt led Kansas City in rushing with 728 yards and seven touchdowns. He didn't join the Chiefs until Week 4 last season after being signed due to Isiah Pacheco's injury.

Chiefs coach reveals the embarrassing error Patrick Mahomes made as a rookie in Kansas City
For all of Patrick Mahomes ' success with the Kansas City Chiefs, it can be easy to forget that the soon-to-be 30-year-old quarterback was once a backup struggling to learn the position behind starter Alex Smith. Drafted 10th overall out of Texas Tech in 2017, Mahomes arrived in Kansas City with experience in then-Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury's spread offense, but still lacked some basic fundamentals. 'He was yelling his first play into the huddle,' Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy remembered, as quoted by ESPN. 'The defense could hear the play. We had to tell him to chill out.' Since then, Mahomes has guided the Chiefs to five Super Bowls, winning three, all while making teammates forget about the clumsy, overexcited rookie he once was. Asked about Mahomes' growth, running Kareem Hunt explained that the Chiefs signal caller is a significantly better player now than when they first played together in 2017. 'Just how much he knows the system now and just seeing how he's able to recognize defenses and call the plays on the fly if he needs to,' Hunt told ESPN. 'He's grown a lot in that aspect.' Mahomes believes his growth reflects a better knowledge of himself and how he responds physically to the punishment of a 17-game season. 'More than anything I have a better understanding of my body,'' Mahomes said. 'I know the extra amount of recovery stuff I need to do, how to feel my best on a day-to-day basis. 'Obviously I probably bounced back a little bit quicker when I was younger but at the same time, I have a better plan and a better standard that I hold myself to on a day-to-day basis so I can be ready for every single practice.' Statistically, Mahomes is coming off a slight down year after passing for just 3,928 yards – his lowest output as a starter – and 11 interceptions, which was more than all but 11 passers in 2024. Still, he once again led the Chiefs to the Super Bowl, and although Kansas City fell to Philadelphia, Mahomes once again enters the season as one of the favorites to lift the Lombardi Trophy at season's end.
