Southfield man to serve up to 60 years for shooting death of his younger sister

A man was sentenced to 40 to 60 years in prison for first-degree murder in the shooting death of his 8-year-old sister in Oakland County, Michigan. Gyasi Stribling was sentenced Tuesday in Oakland County Circuit Court after having been convicted by a jury in April in the death of Bailei Singleton. He had faced up to life in prison. The fatal shooting happened in January 2021 at their home in Southfield. Stribling, who was 20 years old at the time, is reported to have shot his sister because she was "talking back" to him at the time. "Bailei Singleton should still be here with us today," Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said about the case. "Her murder was a tragedy for her family. It's unconscionable that anyone, let alone an 8-year-old child, could be murdered by a relative and in their own home over the slightest of disagreements. This case is, unfortunately, a reminder of how gun violence is a public health epidemic that can end a life in an instant."

Farmington Hills man sentenced to prison for attacking 80-year-old man in YMCA locker room

A Farmington Hills man was sentenced Tuesday in the case of an 80-year-old man assaulted inside a Michigan YMCA locker room. Malik Ali Smith, age 20, was sentenced to 23 months to 10 years in prison credit for time served, on the charge of assault with intent to murder, according to court records. He could have faced life in prison. An Oakland County jury issued the verdict in April in response to the March 1 assault at the Farmington Hills YMCA. The two argued in the locker room, according to earlier reports, and during the confrontation, the older man's head was shoved into the counter. Another man who heard the altercation looked toward the scene and pulled the suspect away from the victim. The older man was hospitalized afterward for treatment of his injuries. "This was a vicious, senseless attack," Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald previously said about the incident.

Former Michigan substitute teacher convicted of criminal sexual conduct

A former Michigan substitute teacher has been convicted of six counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. Timothy Allen Daugherty, 61, of White Lake, was found guilty Tuesday in Oakland County Circuit Court. An investigation revealed that multiple students experienced inappropriate interactions with Daugherty while he was substitute teaching at Spring Mills Elementary School of the Huron Valley School District in Highland Township. The first allegations of Daughtery having inappropriate sexual contact with minor students were reported to police in April 2024. The victims, all female students, were between the ages of 9 and 11 years old when the alleged abuse occurred. Daugherty was charged in September 2024 with six counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. "Timothy Daugherty victimized the children he was supposed to nurture and protect," said Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald in a statement. "Parents expect schools to be a safe place for their children and children should never have to fear their own teachers. Coming forward is never easy for victims, especially children. Thanks to them, Daugherty won't be able to harm another student." Daugherty will be sentenced on June 24. He faces up to 15 years in prison.

Court of Appeals denies Oxford High School shooter's attempt to appeal life sentence

The Michigan Court of Appeals has denied Ethan Crumbley's request to appeal his sentencing, upholding his life sentence without the possibility of parole. The decision was made by a three-judge panel on Tuesday, May 6. The court cited a "lack of merit in the grounds presented" and also rejected Crumbley's motion to remand the case, which sought to have it sent back to a lower court for further review. Crumbley, who was 15 at the time of the November 2021 Oxford school shooting, pleaded guilty to all charges in 2022. In December 2024, an Oakland County judge denied his attempt to withdraw his guilty plea and reconsider his sentence. More: James Crumbley returns to court: I deserve a new trial, too After the May 6 decision, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald issued a statement supporting the ruling and highlighting the severity of the crimes committed by Crumbley. 'This ruling, first and foremost, reaffirms basic truths: On November 30, 2021, the shooter murdered Madisyn Baldwin, Tate Myre, Hana St. Juliana, and Justin Shilling, he wounded seven others, and he terrorized an entire community," McDonald said. "The shooter had his day in court. A judge weighed the severity of his crimes and rendered a fair sentence." She also pointed out that the tragedy could have been prevented, noting that both Crumbley and his parents had multiple opportunities to stop the shooting. 'As Judge Kwame Rowe said at sentencing, the shooter had multiple opportunities to make different decisions. He did not,' McDonald added. 'As a society, we must start treating gun violence as the public health crisis that it is.' Attorneys for Crumbley could not immediately be reached. 'Super habitual offender': Prosecutor requests sentence enhancement for accused Oxford Christmas Eve shooter

The Brief The prosecutor is requesting that a man accused of killing a woman on Christmas Eve in Oxford is sentenced as a "super habitual offender." This designation would ensure Malik Webb goes to prison for at least 25 years. Webb, who has a long criminal history, is accused of shooting three people who stopped to help him after a crash. OXFORD, Mich. (FOX 2) - Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald requested a sentence enhancement for a man accused of killing a woman during a Christmas Eve shooting in Oxford that also wounded two others. McDonald is requesting that Malik Letroy Webb, 30, be charged as a "super habitual offender" to ensure that, if convicted, he goes to prison for at least 25 years. The backstory Webb, of Flint, crashed into a ditch near Ray and North Oxford roads around 6:15 p.m. Dec. 24, 2024. When Dr. Barbara Wolf stopped to help, Webb allegedly shot Wolf and her 39-year-old daughter. Wolf later died at a hospital, while her daughter was non-fatally wounded. Another driver who also stopped to help, a 56-year-old man, was shot in the arm, and a 39-year-old woman was allegedly held at gunpoint in a failed carjacking attempt. After the shooting, Webb was charged with felony murder, three counts of assault with intent to murder, three counts of felonious assault, carjacking, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and nine counts of third offense felony firearm possession. "The victims in this case were literal good Samaritans, terrorized simply for trying to be helpful," McDonald said. "This defendant has served multiple sentences for past gun crimes. We cannot allow repeat violent offenders to continue endangering our communities. Enough is enough." According to records, Webb has a felony record dating back to at least 2014, when he was charged with numerous weapons offenses. After serving a probation sentence for those crimes, Webb went to prison for more weapons offenses. While behind bars, he was also convicted of possessing a weapon while in prison. After the shooting, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard blasted the criminal justice system. He called for stronger penalties for violent offenders. What's next Webb is due back in court for a pre-trial hearing on May 13.
