Curry is a comforting dish often paired with rice or flatbread. It is widely enjoyed in Asian cuisines, notably Indian and Thai. Here are 7 iconic curry variations showcasing global culinary diversity. Curry is a wholesome, comforting gravy dish in a bowl, with a medley of spices and veggies and/or meat. Bursting with flavour in each mouthful, these are traditionally served with rice or bread/flatbread. While curry is strongly associated with Asian cuisine, especially Indian, Thai, and Japanese food, it's also a global dish loved in many countries such as Great Britain and South America. If you love curries, get ready to travel the world with these seven iconic gravy dishes, one spoonful at a time. Bring The World To Your Plate With These 7 Yummy Curries: 1. Kari Ayam (Malaysia) This fragrant Malaysian curry blends tender chicken pieces with a medley of spices like star anise, fennel, and lemongrass, all simmered in creamy coconut milk. Traditionally slow-cooked in clay pots, Kari Ayam is best paired with steamed rice to soak up every drop of its luscious gravy. 2. Phanaeng Curry (Thailand) Phanaeng is a rich Thai curry known for its salty-sweet peanut flavour. It features slow-stewed meats like beef or chicken cooked in coconut milk, palm sugar, fish sauce, and panang curry paste. A hint of makrut lime leaf adds a burst of freshness to its luxurious depth. 3. Murgh Makhani (India) India's beloved butter chicken, or murgh makhani, is a creamy, indulgent dish made with marinated roasted chicken simmered in a tomato-butter-cream gravy. Enhanced with aromatic spices, it is the ultimate North Indian non-vegetarian comfort food. It is popularly enjoyed with butter naan, garlic naan or rice. 4. Kare (Japan) Japanese curry, or kare, has a mellow spice level, dark roux-thickened sauce, and a hint of sweetness. Served in multiple variations - over rice (kare raisu), noodles (kare udon), or inside fluffy bread rolls (kare-pan) - this dish is a comforting staple in Japanese homes. 5. Kukul Mas Kari (Sri Lanka) Straight from Colombo, this Sri Lankan chicken curry is a creamy blend of coconut milk, turmeric, garam masala, and red chilli powder. Kukul mas kari delivers bold, warm flavours in every bite and is typically served hot with rice or flatbread. 6. Hassar Curry (Guyana) Hailing from Guyana, South America, this unique fish curry spotlights hassar, a spiny catfish native to the region. Other ingredients include onions, garlic, lime juice, potatoes, tomatoes, coconut milk, curry powder, and hot peppers. 7. Fish Head Curry (Singapore) A true Singaporean invention, Fish Head Curry turns fish heads into a showstopping dish. It was invented during the 1970s as a way to use up unwanted fish heads. The fish is braised in a spicy coconut-based gravy with tamarind, chilli, and curry leaves. It is served with rice or bread. Each of these seven global variations tells a story of culture, spice, and comfort, served up in a warm, delicious bowl.

Malaysian Kari Ayam Ranked No. 1 Stew In The World On TasteAtlas
Subscribe to our FREE Online traditional food guide TasteAtlas just put Kari Ayam (chicken curry) at the top of its April 2025 global ranking for 50 best stews around the world. Malaysian chicken curry is a flavour-packed blend of spices mixed in creamy santan (coconut milk). Soft, boiled potatoes give the broth a thick, starchy consistency and is doubly delicious as it gets saturated with curry. This spicy and savoury comfort food is usually paired with a plate of steamed white rice or flatbreads such as roti canai or capati , but you can pretty much have it with any other form of carbs. It can even be paired with all types of pasta. Image: 12 Tomatoes Thailand's Phanaeng Curry came in second place, and is similar to Malaysian chicken curry in terms of spices and coconut milk. The main difference is that it has a distinctive zest from the makrut lime in the recipe. Third place goes to the traditional Armenian stew Dzhash, which combines fresh vegetables, legumes, and fragrant herbs. Our Thai neighbour managed to clinch the most number of entries compared to the other Southeast Asian countries included in the list with Massaman Curry (7th place), Thai Curry (23rd place), Green Curry (26th place), and Red Curry (29th place). Meanwhile, Indonesia's Rendang and Gulai were put in 6th and 10th place respectively. India holds all the cards when it comes to curries and stews Chicken Vindaloo, a spicy curry dish originating from Goa, India. Image: East Indian Recipes It's no surprise that India has the most number of entries in the list, seeing as how they are the masters of curry. The first Indian stew dish to appear on the rankings is Murgh Makhani (4th), a butter chicken dish originating from Delhi. This is followed by Keema (8th), Misal (12th), Kurma (24th), Vindaloo (27th), Dal Tadka (34th), Saag Paneer (39th), Shahi Paneer (40th), and Xacuti (50th). Netizens question some dishes' categorization as 'stew' The inclusion of rendang in a list for stews raised a few eyebrows, but a quick check clarified any dish that involves the slow cooking of meat, vegetables, or sauce in a liquid can be considered a stew. While rendang may not seem like a stew, the meat is cooked slowly over a long period of time in a closed pot or a pressure cooker to give it that tender texture. Of course, there was also an argument about whether rendang is a Malaysian or Indonesian dish, but it's pretty common for countries in a region to share their own rendition of a dish. In any case, recipes are meant to be shared with pride, just like the food we eat. Otherwise, how else will the rest of the world know how great our food is? Share your thoughts with us via TRP's . 9 Indian stews make it to TasteAtlas' list of 50 Best Stews in the world; murgh makhani takes 4th spot
A stew, often referred to as a curry in many Indian kitchens, is a comforting, gravy-based dish made by slow-cooking vegetables, meat, or fish in a small amount of liquid. This liquid can range from tomato paste and yoghurt to coconut milk or even a simple spiced broth. What makes stews so special is their rich, layered flavour that develops over time. They pair perfectly with rice, roti, or even a slice of crusty bread for a warming meal. Now, Indian cuisine has added another feather to its cap, as nine of its beloved stews have secured spots in the TasteAtlas list of the 50 Best Stews in the world, with the comforting and spiced murgh makhni taking the 4th spot. TasteAtlas, the popular global food and travel guide known for curating culinary rankings based on user ratings, recently released its list of the world's top stews. Indian dishes dominate the chart. Murgh makhani (also popularly known as butter chicken), often served across different northern regions of India with subtle variations, is a beloved dish and was rated in the top 5. A post shared by TasteAtlas (@tasteatlas) Joining it are eight more Indian staples on the list: The first spot was grabbed by Kari Ayam (Malaysia), a chicken curry made with onions, garlic, ginger, ghee, tomatoes, coconut milk, and spices. Following it in second place was Phanaeng Curry (Thailand), which has a salty-sweet peanut flavour and the third spot was taken by Dzhash (Armenia), a tomato-based stew with meat or legumes.
