Project Connect aims to simplify social service access in Northern Michigan

PETOSKEY — More than 300 people made their way to North Central Michigan College in Petoskey on March 19 for the annual Project Connect event. Around 90 organizations set up in the college's gym, with resources on hand ranging from addiction support to medical care to new parent guidance and more. The goal of the event is to bring as many community resources as possible together on one day under one roof, so residents can find what they need and get assistance in multiple areas. 'Understanding the complicated social services system can be a challenge and at Project Connect we will help direct you to agencies that can offer assistance," said Project Connect co-chair Dana Lorian in a release. Booths were also set up offering education information, with the Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District and NCMC hosting their own tables at the event. While walking around, people could connect with representatives to learn more about the services they offered. They could also pick up some resources right there in the gym, including informational packets, Narcan bottles, baby blankets and more. North Central Michigan College reports 5% enrollment increase for winter semester

PETOSKEY — North Central Michigan College saw a 5% enrollment increase this winter compared to last year, according to a release from the college. The college reported 1,722 students enrolled for Winter 2025, with a 5% rise in returning students and a 10% increase in full-time students. School officials said the Michigan Reconnect Scholarship, which offers tuition-free and reduced-cost degrees for eligible Michiganders without a college credential, has contributed to the increase in adult student enrollment. The number of traditional-aged students (18-24) rose by 7%, while adult learners (25 and older) increased by 6%. Additionally, 80% of students who enrolled in Fall 2024 returned for the Winter 2025 semester. 'This enrollment growth demonstrates that more students see the value of a North Central credential,' Erin Sonneveldt, associate dean of Institutional Research and Assessment, said in the release. 'Our commitment to affordability, accessibility and career-driven education — supported by programs like Michigan Reconnect — is making a real difference in student success and retention.' Registration for the Fall 2025 semester begins March 12 and Summer 2025 registration is currently open. — This story was created by reporter Karly Graham, kgraham@ with the assistance of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
