Supreme Court rejects recruitment scam kingpin RD Patil's bail plea

Bengaluru: The Supreme Court Wednesday turned down the bail petition filed by Rudragauda Patil, aka RD Patil, the alleged kingpin of multiple recruitment examination frauds. The apex court had in Jan this year refused to hear Patil's bail plea, directing his counsel to file a fresh petition after a year. The court directed doctors at Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Kalaburagi, to submit a report on Patil's health and decide whether he needed treatment for back pain. The doctors' committee in its report said Patil had no health issues. Accordingly, the Supreme Court Wednesday directed Patil's counsel to 'file a fresh application in Jan 2026.' Patil was arrested for his alleged role in examination fraud in Nov 2023 by the criminal investigation department (CID) team, led by superintendent of police Raghavendra Hegde, under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crime (KCOCA) Act for his alleged involvement in examination fraud and recruitment scams. In 2022, another CID team had arrested Patil for his alleged involvement in the police sub inspector recruitment scam of 2021. He has been accused of supplying bluetooth devices to recruitment exam candidates in earlier scams and, in the latest case, the cops have alleged that he purchased more than a dozen walkie-talkies from Gurgaon locality near Malegaon in Maharashtra for "calling team and answering team" to help aspirants appearing for recruitment exams for first division and second division assistants. The govt had installed jammers around these examination centres to stop bluetooth devices from functioning. However, the apex court refused to hear the matter, and Patil's counsel withdrew the petition. BOX: Involvement In KEA Exam Scam Patil allegedly got involved in the KEA exam scam when he successfully got a stay from the high court against the CID investigation into his involvement in the PSI scam, according to the chargesheet. "Patil got the court stay against the PSI investigation in April 2023 and CID got the stay vacated in Dec of the same year. In Oct 2023, Patil carried out the KEA exam fraud by supplying walkie-talkies to candidates and their associates," an investigating officer said.
