Rising level of Krishna River sparks flood fears in Belagavi

1 2 Pic: Krishna River is overflowing on the Ugar-Kudachi bridge; (below) Ghataprabha water being released at Hidkal dam Belagavi: Continuous downpour in the Western Ghats and catchment areas pushed the Krishna River's level up by 5 feet in 48 hours on Tuesday. Krishna and its tributaries, Vedganga and Doodhganga, are also swelling. District authorities are monitoring the situation and coordinating with Maharashtra to implement precautionary steps. The water level in the Krishna and its tributaries rose significantly due to incessant rains across the Western Ghats and Belagavi district for the past four days. District administration sources said that the water level of the Krishna River rose by 5 feet in the last 48 hours as of Tuesday evening. The Hidkal reservoir on the Ghataprabha River and the Renuka Sagar reservoir on the Malaprabha River are in the process of being consecrated, and a huge amount of water is being released from the reservoirs into the rivers. As a precautionary measure against floods, the district administration is in constant touch with the Maharashtra govt and is monitoring the flood situation to ensure that it does not escalate. Water was released from Radha Nagari reservoir and Koyna reservoir in Maharashtra. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why are some Chinese youth calling themselves 'rat people', and what issues does it surface? The Krishna River is also overflowing over the Ugar-Kudachi Bridge, which connects to Maharashtra, cutting off the connection with Maharashtra. The inflow of the Ghataprabha River increased in the Hidkal basin. The officials of Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited (KNNL) said that due to the high inflow to the Ghataprabha River, water is being released from the reservoir. It was advised to the people living near the Ghataprabha and Hiranyakeshi river banks to move their livestock to safer places as the outflow is likely to increase further. Similarly, water is being released from the Renuka Sagar reservoir in phases as the inflow rate to Malaprabha has been increasing. The reservoir level on Tuesday was 2,075 feet, while the full level of the reservoir is 2,079.5 feet. The superintendent engineer of Renuka Sagar reservoir said that villagers on the banks of the Malaprabha River and people downstream of the reservoir have been advised to move to a safer place.

Massive Lokayukta raids in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Jun 24 (UNI) In a sweeping crackdown on alleged corruption within Karnataka's irrigation and rural development departments, the Lokayukta police on Tuesday launched simultaneous raids at multiple locations targeting high-ranking officials. In Belagavi, the residence of Ashok Vasand, Chief Engineer of the Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited (KNNL) Dharwad division, was raided by Lokayukta officials. The raid, conducted at his Ramtirth Nagar residence, led to the seizure of gold, diamond jewellery, and Rs 1.5 lakh in cash. Simultaneous searches were being carried at his office in Dharwad. Further expanding the operation, the Lokayukta team, led by Superintendent of Police Hanumantharaya, conducted coordinated raids across Vasand's other premises in Dharwad, Kajjidoni, Jamkhandi, and Jakanur. Officials are scanning documents and assets for evidence of disproportionate wealth and corruption. Meanwhile, in another parallel operation, raids were carried out in Kalaburagi, Bengaluru, and Vijayapura against Executive Engineer Mallikarjun Alipur and Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) Ramachandra. This team was led by SP BK Umesh and DySP Geetha Benal. All the operations are part of an ongoing state-wide investigation into corruption in public works, irrigation schemes, and misuse of government funds. Officials confirmed that the searches are still ongoing, and a detailed inventory of seized items will be released once preliminary scrutiny is complete. The Lokayukta has ramped up its vigilance against corruption in Karnataka's bureaucratic machinery, and these latest raids point to a larger effort at cleaning up irregularities in critical public departments. HC to govt: Devise SOP, tech integration to streamline land acquisition

Bengaluru: The Karnataka high court has directed the state govt to devise a standard operating procedure (SOP) for land acquisition processes and integrate technology to ensure efficiency, transparency, and protection for landowners. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Justice Suraj Govindaraj issued the direction after flagging "multiple anomalies" in land acquisition cases handled by the Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited for the Upper Tunga Project in Haveri and the Konkan Railway Corporation in Karwar, particularly with regard to compensation delays. The court took strong exception to a case involving acquisition proceedings initiated in 1991 but resulting in a compensation award only in 2022. "The manner in which these matters approached the court... indicated the lackadaisical approach of the authorities," the judge observed. Justice Govindaraj instructed the chief secretary to consult the principal secretary of the e-governance department and draft detailed guidelines while leveraging technology. The proposed software must record and track every stage of the process — from initial notifications and inquiries to final awards — digitally. It must also capture file notings, opinions of the special land acquisition officer, guideline values, and any proceedings before the reference court. An electronic register is to be maintained for applications filed, complete with time-stamped logs and electronic notices. A detailed project report on the implementation must be submitted within six weeks. All petitions in the case were dismissed following the directions. Rs 150 crore sanctioned for Tungabhadra barrage-cum-bridge to ease Haveri's water woes

HAVERI: The Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited (KNNL) sanctioned Rs 150 crore for building a barrage across the Tungabhadra River near Kancharagatti in Haveri taluk. The project received approval during the KNNL board of directors' meeting on Jan 25, 2025. The board advised submitting a DPR (detailed project report) to obtain govt administrative approval. KNNL allocated Rs 50 crore initially for the project and set aside Rs 50 lakh for DPR preparation. The initiative will support 17 tanks under the Budapanahalli Lift Irrigation scheme while addressing drinking water requirements in Guttal and Haveri city. Despite 28 years since the Haveri district's establishment, the city continues to face severe drinking water shortages. Although the Haveri City Municipal Council maintains water lifting facilities at the Tungabhadra River near Kancharagatti and Karjagi from the Varada River, both sources run dry during summer. The request for a barrage across the Tungabhadra River for drinking water has persisted for 20 years, with previous administrations taking no action. Currently, with support from deputy speaker and MLA Rudrappa Lamani and Haveri district minister Shivanand Patil, residents are optimistic about their longstanding request being fulfilled. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esta nueva alarma con cámara es casi regalada en Almafuerte (ver precio) Verisure Undo Shivanand Patil said: "I will direct the officers concerned to call a tender for fixing an agency to prepare the DPR for constructing a barrage across the Tungabhadra River.
