Bengaluru: The Karnataka Police have cracked the case involving the planting of explosive materials outside a public toilet at Bengaluru's overcrowded Kalasipalya bus stop and have arrested three persons. Confirming the arrests on Tuesday, DCP (West) S. Girish stated that as the investigation was ongoing, the names and photos of the accused would be released in due course. Girish said, "The incident took place on July 23. Taking the matter seriously, the police department formed five teams. These teams conducted investigations, gathered information from sources, and, through technical evidence, apprehended three suspects." He further added, "The police have recovered 22 live REX 90 gelatin gel capsules and 30 live electric detonators. We have also obtained information about other individuals involved in the case, and the investigation is still in progress." Earlier, panic had gripped Bengaluru's Kalasipalya bus stop after an unattended bag was found outside a public toilet on July 23. Acting on information about a suspicious bag, Bengaluru Police rushed to the spot and recovered gelatin sticks and detonators outside a public toilet at the Kalasipalya bus stop. Six (REX 90) gelatin gel capsules and 12 electric detonators, both separately packed, were found in a carry bag outside the toilet located on the premises of the Kalasipalya Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus stand. The explosive materials were discovered around 2 p.m. They were kept in separate bags near the toilet. The case was filed under Sections 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act, under Sections 6 (A), 9 (B) of the Explosives Act and also under Sections 61 (1)(a), 61 (1)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita. Assistant Traffic Superintendent (ATS) Mallappa R. Katiimani had filed a complaint in this regard. An unknown person and an adult male were named as the accused persons initially in the FIR. The FIR had stated, "The complainant works as the ATS at the Kalasipalya bus stop and has come to duty at 8 a.m. and inspected the Kalasipalya BMTC bus stop and found nothing at that time. Later, at 1.15 pm, security personnel Prabhvathi and Raju produced a bag saying that an unknown person had left it near the bus stand public toilet. He suspected the presence of the explosive substance and called the police. The police, who arrived at the spot, confirmed it." The complainant has stated that the Kalasipalya bus stop is an overcrowded place and urged the police to track down the persons who had left the explosive substances to cause harm to lives and property, and initiate legal action, the FIR stated. Kalasipalya is a communally sensitive and densely populated area in Bengaluru, and the discovery had raised serious concerns among residents and security agencies. Recently, over 40 private schools in Bengaluru received bomb threat messages via email.

Lakshya Sen reacts after Supreme Court quashes FIR in birth certificate forgery case: ‘Glad it has brought clarity'

Indian Badminton player Lakshya Sen has welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to quash the FIR filed against him, his family members, and his coach in a case involving allegations of forging birth certificates. Calling it a moment of closure, the ace Indian shuttler said he is relieved the matter has finally concluded. Lakshya Sen has elcomed the Supreme Court's decision 'I respect the Hon'ble Supreme Court's decision and am thankful that the matter has now been concluded,' he said in a statement following the verdict. 'I had faith in the judiciary and am glad that it has brought clarity. My focus remains on badminton, and I'm committed to continuing my journey with full dedication. I appreciate the support I've received from well-wishers during this time,' added the 23-year-old. The statement came shortly after a Supreme Court bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Aravind Kumar ruled that continuing criminal proceedings against Sen, his family, and coach U Vimal Kumar would amount to 'an abuse of the process of the court.' The FIR stemmed from a 2022 complaint filed by the head of a rival badminton academy, who alleged that Lakshya's parents and coach had colluded in 2010 to forge the birth certificates of Lakshya and his brother, Chirag, to qualify for age-restricted tournaments. The complainant also alleged that the family used the documents to claim government benefits and submitted RTI-obtained records in support of the accusations. The Karnataka Police had registered the case under IPC sections 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), and 471 (using forged documents as genuine). However, the investigation remained stalled after the Karnataka High Court granted an interim stay. In February 2025, the High Court dismissed the petitions seeking to quash the FIR, prompting the family and coach to approach the Supreme Court. Reacting to the verdict, the Sen family issued a statement: 'This has been a challenging time for our family but we always believed that the truth would come to light. We're thankful to the Hon'ble Supreme Court for bringing closure to this matter. Lakshya and Chirag have always let their hard work speak for itself and with this chapter behind us, our full focus is on supporting them as they continue to grow, compete, and make the country proud.'

State bans use of sirens during VIP movement: DGP issues strict order

Bengaluru: In a significant move aimed at enhancing public safety and curbing noise pollution, Karnataka's Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG & IGP) Dr. M.A. Saleem has issued an official order banning the use of sirens during the movement of VIPs across the state. The order, issued on Sunday, states that the use of sirens not only creates unnecessary disturbance on public roads but also potentially exposes the route of VIPs to unauthorized individuals, thereby increasing the risk to their security. Considering this, the DGP has directed that sirens must not be used for VIP convoys or movement. The directive also highlights that sudden use of sirens on public roads can inconvenience other motorists and may lead to accidents, especially when vehicles are forced to make abrupt movements to make way. The order recommends that any urgent coordination during VIP travel should be conducted through wireless communication channels rather than sirens. According to the guidelines laid down in the order, only emergency service vehicles such as ambulances, police vehicles, and fire brigades may use sirens, and only in genuine emergency situations. The DGP further emphasised that as per Supreme Court directives, no vehicle other than emergency services is permitted to use sirens. Even police vehicles are restricted from using sirens unless responding to an emergency. Violation of this rule will attract legal action under Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, which could result in a fine along with up to three months of imprisonment. This decisive step by the Karnataka Police aims to ensure safer roads, reduce noise pollution, and maintain the secrecy and security of VIP movements.
