Farmer ends life due to crop loss, debt in Kalaburagi
Kalaburagi: A farmer in Kalaburagi district died by suicide due to debt, authorities confirmed. Basavaraja Mosandi, 35, of Kavalaga B village under Farhatabad Hobli in Kalaburagi taluk, owned three acres.
He borrowed Rs 2 lakh from the Bank of Baroda in Farhatabad and took crop loans.
Mosandi borrowed a total of Rs 7.5 lakh, including a private loan of Rs 3,50,000 for agriculture. He cultivated cotton and sorghum, but excessive rainfall washed away his crops. After the loss, Mosandi hanged himself.
He is survived by his wife and a son. Farhatabad station police visited the site, and verification is underway. Sharanbasappa Mammashetti and Rayappa Huramunji, district presidents of the Karnataka Provincial Farmers Association, demanded that compensation be given to the family of the deceased.
