PGA to give away 3,000 Ryder Cup tickets to local New York golfers with 'The People's Perk'
One of golf's most in-demand tickets will be a little easier to obtain for the right kind of fan. The PGA of America announced 'The People's Perk,' a 'grassroots program' to give 3,000 tickets to this year's Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black to local New York residents. Advertisement 'As we kept thinking about what Bethpage represents, it's the people, it's the tie to public golf. We've gotten to know the culture very well, the challenge of playing public golf,' Bryan Karns, the PGA of America's championship director, told 'Very early on, in 2023, we were kicking around the idea [of a giveaway] because we knew the demand would be so high with a global audience. 'At the Ryder Cup you're competing with people all over the world and that was actually the north star. We didn't have any way to carve out tickets for the people who are the essence of Bethpage.' The giveaway will be a targeted program to 'meet the people where they are, at public golf courses.' 'We collaborated with a number of our key stakeholders and it's shown me there is a massive community of golfers and facilities that very rarely get their story told,' Karns said. 'At the end of the day, we're guests in this market.' Advertisement 'The People's Perk' tickets will be awarded throughout the summer to residents who represent the fabric of public-access golf at various New York-area courses and facilities. PGA officials will use input from local clubs and courses to determine the recipients. Fans who are selected will be given a ticket for themselves and a "plus one" — for a total of 3,000 tickets — for either a competition or practice round day. The PGA of America had been criticized for the price of this year's Ryder Cup tickets, with Friday through Sunday tickets costing $750 – which includes unlimited food and non-alcoholic beverages. Karns said the 'The People's Perk' giveaway is not a response to that criticism. 'We know this isn't some sort of silver bullet that will take care of everyone,' he said. 'In no way is this a reaction to anything other than what we knew was going to be competition for the tickets because the demand was going to be so high. We didn't want this to feel reactionary [to ticket prices].' Thursday-through-Sunday tickets have already sold out for the Ryder Cup and Karns said there's 'a very limited amount of tickets on Tuesday and Wednesday.'

Advocates want increased funding for senior services in Knoxville budget
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — As we wait for the second reading of Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon's proposed budget, some in the community are calling for ana amendment addressing the need for senior housing and additional programming amid the growing population. Vivian Shipe from the nonprofit organization I am the Voice of the Voiceless spoke during the City Council meeting last week to see if the council would address that need for more senior housing and programming across the city. Military helicopter training at Downtown Island Airport unsettles area residents 'We need to set aside money for senior housing, senior transportation and activities here in Knoxville and Knox County,' Shipe said. One place where it's hoped that need will soon be met, is in the Karns community. Construction on phase three of Willow Place, an affordable housing development for seniors, began last year with a completion date targeted for 2026. 'Our seniors are very active and they're living longer,' Shipe added. Shipe said census data projects Knoxville's senior population will rise 25% by 2030 and the city needs to start planning for the future. 'When you're talking about seniors who are in their 60's, 70's and 80's that are dancing, they're having activities at places like the O'Connor Center,' Shipe explained. 'They are having speakers, they're travelling, there's a set that's active. Then lets talk about the ones that maybe has health problems so we have to be prepared for that also.' O'Connor Center has a variety of activities for those seniors who can make the trip to Winona Street in Knoxville helping make sure those seniors who may not have family close by can still socialize within the community. 'It's very important, especially with what we learned through the pandemic is when people are isolated, their physical and mental health decline,' Program Director at the John T. O'Connor Senior Center Mary Sibbett said. 'The J. T. O'Connor Center is a location for them to come and socialize, make friendships, build lifelong friendships, to build new friendships and to engage in different things that are fun for them.' Including the O'Connor Center, there are seven senior centers across Knox County. The O'Connor Center works with those other centers to provide the best slate of activities and socialization opportunities for area senior, but at times, that doesn't always seem to be enough due to the areas growing senior population. 'One of the things our participants or members ask me is, 'Mary, we need to add that second level so we can have more classes,'' Sibbett said. 'Some of our classes are full to the point where we would have to say 'sorry, can you come to tomorrow's class? We can't fit you in today. This is a very critical place for those [individuals] to come and we are very very fortunate to be a part of the CAC family.' 'We're getting double whammied right now': Local union president reacts to planned UPS layoffs A family whose impacts will continue to be felt and according to Shipe, they cannot be overlooked moving forward. 'I believe that it's going to be very important, not only for this budget and if not this budget, in budgets to come,' Shipe said. Sibbett said the average number of participants who utilize the center's programs has risen from nearly 400 to over 700 in the seven months she's been there. Miss Mississippi Teen Volunteer Izzy Karns
JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Miss Mississippi Teen Volunteer Izzy Karns is a freshman at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM). She serves as a spokesperson for the Mississippi Highway Patrol's DRIVE Campaign to educate teens on the importance of safe driving. Karns is majoring in Business and minoring in Social Media and Content strategies, with the goal of one day opening her own business. She is also passionate about advocating for shelter pet adoption and founded her organization, Choose Rescue, three years ago. To date, she has raised over $21,000 for animal shelters across the state and has hosted multiple adoption events. Through the Miss Volunteer America national partnerships, Izzy has served as a statewide ambassador for the Salvation Army, filming PSAs and raising awareness on how citizens can 'Do the Most Good' in their communities in partnership with the Salvation Army.
