German digital minister attacks AI Act, defends gigafactories
Germany's digital minister, Karsten Wildberger, has attacked the EU's AI Act as overly complex and bureaucratic, while heaping praise on the Commission's plan to spend billions setting up massive AI training hubs known as gigafactories. Wildberger made the remarks in an interview with German publication Tagesspiegel in which he also vowed to 'try everything' to make the AI Act more "innovation friendly" once the Commission's digital simplification track kicks off in the autumn. 'It's overloaded and too complex,' he complained of the EU law, adding: 'Of course risks have to be addressed, but the implementation is extremely bureaucratic.' Wildberger, a former electronics retail manager, became Germany's first digital minister in the coalition government led by Friedrich Merz this May. The minister also defended the EU's planned 'AI gigafactories' against criticism from the bosses of German giants, SAP and Siemens, who have suggested the facilities are unnecessary. 'If we can't find a way to use a data centre with 100,000 high-end AI chips, then I don't know what do anymore,' said Wildberger. Siemens and SAP are world-class companies, he said – but pointed out that decisive innovation most often comes from startups. He also said that Germany needs to become more active at the European level. (nl)

US software giant Oracle to invest $2bn in Germany to meet AI demand
US software giant Oracle plans to invest $2 billion in Germany over the next five years in order to meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) applications and cloud infrastructure. The funds will be largely channelled into the Rhine-Main region around the city of Frankfurt, where Oracle's cloud infrastructure is to be expanded and capacities for AI applications significantly expanded. Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger said that Oracle's strategic investment demonstrates that Germany is an attractive location for digital innovation and investment. "The increasing demand for cloud solutions shows that the digital transformation is progressing well in our country," he said, arguing that the investment strengthens Germany's digital infrastructure and enables companies and public authorities to benefit from state-of-the-art AI and cloud technologies. "We want to continue along this path together with the business community and further expand Germany's role as a leading digital centre in Europe," Wildberger added. Thorsten Herrmann, senior vice president at Oracle Germany, said the software company is helping organizations across Germany to accelerate their AI and cloud transformation. The world's largest cloud companies, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google and Microsoft, have previously announced investments in data centres across Germany. The Rhine-Main region is attracting a significant number of these investments because Frankfurt is home to DE-CIX, one of the world's largest internet hubs. This huge exchange point ensures high transmission speeds and short data transfer times. German mobile phone users to troubleshoot last coverage dead spots
Germany's mobile phone networks have improved significantly in recent years, but the last spots of poor coverage remain in both urban and rural areas. — AFP Relaxnews DUSSELDORF: Mobile phone owners across Germany are urged in the coming days to support an initiative to locate and report the last dead spots in network reception. Organised by the federal, state and local governments, the first nationwide mobile phone measurement week is to start on Monday and run until next Sunday. Citizens should use the Federal Network Agency's free broadband measurement app to help close the last of the infamous gaps in coverage that have long frustrated callers and Internet users. "Together we will create an up-to-date picture of network availability – and thus provide a database for better mobile coverage overall," said Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger. Germany's mobile phone networks have improved significantly in recent years, but the last spots of poor coverage remain in both urban and rural areas. Last year, a mobile phone measurement week of this kind was already organised in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. – dpa
