Punjab govt grants lifetime pensions to widows

Listen to article The Punjab government has raised the provincial minimum wage to Rs40,000 per month and ensured lifetime pensions for widows of government employees. The reforms were adopted during the 28th cabinet meeting, presided over by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, where a comprehensive 130-point agenda was approved. The cabinet approved the allocation of 1,220 flats for industrial workers in Sunder, Kasur and Taxila labour colonies to be distributed through balloting, while firmly rejecting suggestions to charge workers for housing. It also instructed officials to take immediate steps to construct an additional 3,000 flats free of cost for these workers. وزیراعلیٰ پنجاب مریم نواز شریف کی زیر صدارت صوبائی کابینہ کا 28واں اجلاس۔۔۔ — Government of Punjab (@GovtofPunjabPK) August 5, 2025 Education policy saw a major update with official assessments confirmed for Grade V and formal examinations for Grade VIII. Meanwhile, lifelong pensions were approved for widows of government employees, enhancing social protection. A significant wage reform was also approved, with a uniform minimum monthly salary of Rs40,000 set for 102 categories of skilled, semi-skilled and other workers. In recognition of flood rescue efforts, the CM announced Rs50,000 bonuses for the rescue worker while praising the agency's performance and underscored the government's commitment to supporting frontline workers. Worker safety was also addressed through the adoption of the Punjab Occupational Safety and Health Rules 2024, marking a first in the province. Maryam ordered the creation of a specialised enforcement force to ensure compliance in high-risk sectors such as construction and sewer operations. She emphasised that enacting laws alone is not sufficient—implementation and enforcement at every level are essential, as the lives of poor workers are invaluable. Government officials further approved child labour restrictions via the Punjab Child Labour (Prohibition) Rules 2024, unified appointment procedures for key university administrators, AI‑based traffic systems set to roll out within 90 days, expansion of WASA services to 13 new cities, paid internships for hospital nurses, and various legislative measures covering recruitment, telecom leasing, sugarcane research and local government acts.

Cong govt pushing Karnataka towards Kashmir-like situation: BJP on murder of Hindu activist

After the broad daylight murder of a Hindu activist in Mangaluru, the Karnataka BJP unit on Friday claimed that the Congress government here is pushing the state towards a Kashmir-like situation. Speaking to the media, BJP State President B. Y. Vijayendra said, "At a time when the memories of the massacre of Hindus in Kashmir are still fresh, the killing of a Hindu activist in Mangaluru suggests that the Congress government is pushing Karnataka towards a Kashmir-like situation. The continuous attacks, assaults, and killings of Hindus across Karnataka have caused deep concern among the people of the state." The brutal murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty in Mangaluru has shocked civil society, he stated. Vijayendra sought Governor Thawarchand Gehlot's immediate intervention to protect the state from "lawlessness". He also prayed for peace to the departed soul and strength to the family of Suhas to bear this irreparable loss. Condemning the incident, he said, "The horrifying sight of communal, Hindu-hating extremists carrying out killings in broad daylight raises a disturbing question among the public - what kind of society are we living in?" Claiming that Suhas' murder was a premeditated act, he sought a thorough investigation to determine whether this was a failure of the intelligence department or the irresponsibility of those entrusted with maintaining law and order. Former Chief Minister B. S. Yediyurappa said, "The brutal murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty in Mangaluru, who was attacked with deadly weapons by miscreants in broad daylight, is deeply shocking. The fact that such criminals have no fear of the law highlights the deteriorating law and order situation. I urge the state government to immediately arrest the culprits." "I pray for the departed soul to rest in peace and express my deepest condolences to the bereaved family. I also pray for the speedy recovery of the other Hindu activist who is undergoing treatment at the hospital after being attacked," he stated. Shetty was hacked to death by a gang using machetes and swords. The killers who came in two vehicles had attacked him while he was travelling in his car with associates in the limits of the Bajpe police station. Shetty was a Bajrang Dal activist and the prime accused in the murder of Mohammad Fazil, a resident of Suratkal. Shetty and his associates had allegedly killed Fazil in a public place on July 28, 2022, in retaliation for the murder of BJP activist Praveen Kumar Nettaru. Nettaru, a BJP worker, was hacked to death during the height of the 'hijab' row.

Cops granted 4.48 lakh days of weekly offs, says CM Stalin

CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday said a total of 4.48 lakh days of weekly offs have been granted to police personnel from grade-II constable to head constable ranks, and 67,233 fortnightly offs to special sub-inspectors (SSIs) and sub-inspectors (SIs), stressing the government's commitment to the welfare of the police force. Replying to MLA M Sinthanai Selvan's questions during the Assembly session, Stalin also said that views on discrepancies in police salary structures have been collected and are under government review. On promotion issues, he clarified that promotions are decided by the respective district and city police heads, and that there is no provision for state-wide promotions based solely on state seniority. Responding to MLA Vanathi Srinivasan, Stalin said the murder of auditor Ramesh had occurred during the previous AIADMK government's tenure and that the case was still pending. Assuring that Tamil Nadu would never face 'Kashmir-like incidents', he urged the Union government to release funds without imposing conditions like mandatory implementation of a three-language policy. He also sought Vanathi Srinivasan's support for the state's developmental and educational initiatives. Countering Leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami's allegations on the law and order situation, Stalin said Tamil Nadu has recorded reduced crime rates, zero custodial deaths since 2022, massive drug seizures, swift delivery of justice, expanded CCTV surveillance, and large-scale police recruitment under the DMK regime.
