Elmira Heights fundraiser supports high school student diagnosed with cancer The fundraiser, Brunch in Bloom, was held at The Pines event venue in Corning. It featured a brunch buffet and community-donated items from local businesses around Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben Counties. Patrons purchased tickets in hopes of winning some of the raffled items and took part in a live auction which helped provide additional funding. Kate Fuller, Marketing and Communications Specialist of CareFirstNY, mentioned the event covering funding shortages for the organization. 'Types of events like this that fundraise help us support that care for people who may not be able to afford it are underinsured or uninsured,' Fuller said. 'It's really about helping people live their remaining days to the absolute fullest. It's about building a community of care around people in our region.' 'I think it's wonderful that so many local businesses have been as generous as they have been so many people have purchased raffle tickets which will be more money to go toward CareFirst,' said attendee Jane Fastiggi. According to Fuller, more than $10,000 has been raised, and the money will go towards hospice care, grief support, and mental health counseling services. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Tributes paid to woman after fatal Crawley crash

Tributes have poured in for a 25-year-old woman who died and whose sister and cousin were seriously injured after they were hit by a car in West Sussex. Flowers have been laid in London Road outside the Crawley Leisure Park, where the three pedestrians - all local to the area - were struck by a grey BMW 3 Series just after 20:30 BST on Saturday, according to Sussex Police. The woman's 12-year-old sister and their cousin, a 19-year-old woman, were taken to hospital. Kate Fuller, who owns a nearby business, told the BBC the incident was "really, really saddening". She added what happened had "hit home" because it was so close to where she works. One tribute, accompanied by candles and laid in London Road, read: "Thinking of you all at this time. Wishing the girls a speedy recovery and may your girl rest in peace." Another added: "Our deepest condolences to the family." A 33-year-old man, from Crawley, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and driving while unfit through drugs. Sussex Police said he had been released from custody on conditional bail until 13 July. Duncan Crow, Crawley Borough councillor for Furnace Green, said the incident was "deeply upsetting and shocking". He said his thoughts and prayers were with the victims and their family. "Thank you to the emergency services who attended, who will have done everything they could at the scene," Mr Crow added. Sussex Police have urged anyone who saw what happened or captured any relevant footage to contact them. Their investigation continues. Follow BBC Sussex on Facebook, X and Instagram.
