Train mishap averted: Iron frame on track halts Humsafar Exp near Lucknow

LUCKNOW A major train accident was averted near Lucknow in the early hours of Sunday (around 3:40 am) when the Anand Vihar Terminal–Gorakhpur Humsafar Express (12572) struck an iron frame that was allegedly placed on the railway tracks between Dilkusha and Malhaur. The obstruction was spotted by the alert loco pilot of the train, said police. The pilot immediately applied the emergency brakes upon noticing the large structure on the down line, managing to stop the train just in time and saving hundreds of lives on board. (Pic for representation) Officials suspected the incident to be a case of sabotage, given the unusual nature and size of the object and its deliberate placement on an operational track. The pilot immediately applied the emergency brakes upon noticing the large structure on the down line, managing to stop the train just in time and saving hundreds of lives on board. The obstruction turned out to be a heavy iron frame resembling a billboard, said Railway officials. 'The hoarding-like board was taken into possession by the Gomti Nagar police in Lucknow and an FIR under sections 151, 153 of the BNS and Railway Act was lodged on Sunday. Authorities are scanning the CCTV footage from the area to trace any suspects or vehicles involved in placing the hoarding,' stated RPF (Lucknow) in a release. Soon after the train was halted, the loco pilot alerted the engineering control in Lucknow. Teams from the Railway Protection Force (RPF), civil police from the Gomti nagar police station and railway engineers reached the site. The structure was removed safely and a thorough inspection of the track was carried out. The incident is the latest in a series of alarming incidents where railway tracks in the region have been targeted in suspected attempts to derail trains. The frequency of such cases has raised concerns over passenger safety and possible larger conspiracies. PAST INCIDENTS April 2025: A major mishap was averted after the driver of a goods train applied emergency brakes on spotting an iron gate placed on the railway track near Bakkas-Utrethia station. The incident led to multiple arrests. May 19, 2025: Two sabotage attempts were reported near Dalelnagar and Umar Tali stations in Hardoi district, where wooden logs were placed on the tracks to derail the Delhi–Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express (20504) and Kathgodam Express (15044). UP train mishap averted: Iron grill on track halts Gorakhpur-Humsafar Express in Lucknow; 8th sabotage bid in Uttar Pradesh since April

LUCKNOW: A train mishap was averted in the early hours of Sunday at around 3 am, when the Anand Vihar Terminal–Gorakhpur Humsafar Express (12572) collided with an iron grill deliberately placed on the railway tracks between Dilkusha and Malhaur in Lucknow. This marks the eighth attempt at train sabotage in Uttar Pradesh, and the third in Lucknow since April. Following the incident, Gomti Nagar police registered an FIR. The case has been filed under sections 151 (damage to railway property) and 153 (endangering passenger safety) of the Railway Act against unknown persons, based on a written complaint by senior section engineer (P-Way) Rajiv Srivastava. "At around 3.40 am, control was informed that 12572 had hit an iron grill placed on the Dilkusha–Malhaur section," the FIR stated. After the incident, the train's loco pilots removed the grill from the track. "Since the train was moving at low speed, the risk of derailment was reduced," said a Northern Railway official from the Lucknow division. String of Sabotage Attempts in Uttar Pradesh UP has witnessed multiple such attempts over the past few months: June 2025: A passenger train was saved from disaster near Dohna station in Bareilly after a ballast (crushed stones used to stabilise tracks) was deliberately jammed into the switch mechanism. Miscreants also bent an earthing plate linked to overhead equipment. 31 May 2025: A 12-foot iron pipe, ballast, and a broken concrete tube were placed on the Delhi–Shamli MEMU train's route near Shamli station, but alert loco pilots spotted the obstruction in time. 29–30 May 2025: Ballast was found on the tracks between Bheerpur and Meja Road in Prayagraj, aimed at derailing the New Delhi–Bhubaneswar Tejas Rajdhani Express (22824). 19 May 2025: Two derailment attempts were reported in Hardoi district where logs were placed on the tracks to target the Delhi–Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express (20504) and Kathgodam Express (15044). 22 April 2025: A freight train hit a large metal door left on the tracks between Utraitai Junction and Bakkas, damaging pandrol clips that secure rails. 16 April 2025: A mango tree branch placed on the track caused a scare for the Delhi-bound Garib Rath Express in Malihabad. 6 October 2024: The Rae Bareli–Raghuraj Singh passenger train avoided derailment after a heap of soil was found on the tracks. 2 October 2024: A railway-owned fire extinguisher was found placed on the tracks near Ambiyapur station, Kanpur Dehat. 29 September 2024: Another fire extinguisher was spotted between Govindpuri and Bhimsen in Kanpur. 22 September 2024: A mini gas cylinder was discovered on a loopline at Prempur station in the North Central Railway zone. 16 September 2024: A wooden log caused engine failure to the Swatantrata Senani Express (12561) between Ghazipur Ghat and Ghazipur City. 9 September 2024: The Kalindi Express (14117) hit an LPG cylinder placed on the track between Barrajpur and Utripura. 6 December 2023: The Shiv Ganga Express (12560) ran over metal rail pieces in Khurja, Bulandshahr. Alert locopilot spots 20-ft-long pipe on tracks in UP, foils derailment bid

Representative image SHAMLI: A 20ft-long iron borewell pipe having a diameter of around 8 inches was detected on Delhi-Saharanpur railway track by an alert loco pilot in the nick of time, averting a major train tragedy on Saturday night. Several medium- to large-sized stones were also found on the tracks. Notably, this was the fourth such attempt of sabotaging of train operations in Uttar Pradesh in May. Last week, there was an attempt to derail the New Delhi-Bhubaneswar Tejas Rajdhani express when an unknown person kept ballast on the tracks between Bheerpur and Meja Road railway stations. Two attempts to derail the Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express (20504) and Kathgodam Express (15044) were recorded on May 19, near Dalelnagar and Umar Tali stations, when an unknown person had kept a wooden log on the rail track. Sharing details of the Shamli incident, officials said the loco pilot applied the emergency brakes and brought the 64021 Delhi-Shamli train to a halt. They added that the pipe was discovered around 10.18 pm between Kandhla and Shamli stations. An FIR was registered at Shamli police station against unknown persons, said Shamli SP Ram Sevak Gautam."Initial investigation revealed that the borewell pipe was uprooted from a tubewell belonging to a farmer of nearby Simbhalkha village," Gautam said, adding that"given the seriousness of the issue, several special police teams have been formed to identify and apprehend those responsible."

Conspiracy to derail Rajdhani Exp foiled

Hardoi: A major attempt to derail two express trains, including the Rajdhani Express, was foiled in Uttar Pradesh's Hardoi district thanks to the alertness and quick response of the loco pilots, officials said on Tuesday. The first incident occurred on the evening of May 19 between Dalel Nagar and Umrauli stations when the loco pilot of the New Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express noticed an unusual obstruction on the track. Authorities said miscreants had tied a wooden block -- described as a gutkha -- to the earthing wire on the down line. The pilot immediately applied the brakes, bringing the train to a halt and averting a potential disaster. Railway personnel promptly removed the obstruction and informed senior railway officials. However, even before the situation could fully stabilise, miscreants struck again. Shortly after the Rajdhani Express had passed safely, a second attempt was made to derail the Kathgodam Express on the same stretch. This attempt too was thwarted by the vigilance of its loco pilot, who spotted the obstruction -- this time reportedly comprising iron pieces and wood -- and stopped the train in time. Upon receiving information, personnel from the Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF), and local police reached the site and launched an investigation. Circle Officer (CO) of Baghauli, Praveen Kumar, said the GRP had alerted Kachhauna police station about suspicious activity on the tracks between Kachhauna and Sandila.

Alert loco pilots foil bid to derail Rajdhani, Kathgodam Express trains

LUCKNOW: Alert loco pilots foiled attempts to derail two major trains running from Delhi - Rajdhani Express and Kathgodam Express - by placing wooden logs on the track in UP's Hardoi district, police said Tuesday. Though there was no official statement by the Indian Railways, the two incidents are being probed, and efforts are on to identify and arrest the culprits. There is no clarity yet on any terror angle to these sabotage bids. "Unknown men had tied wooden blocks to the railway track between Dalelnagar and Umartali stations using earthing wire on Monday evening," said GRP SHO, Hardoi, Jaiprakash Singh. Police said the first attempt was made around 5.45pm, when the New Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express was heading towards Lucknow. A likely disaster was averted as the loco pilot applied the emergency brake after spotting the obstruction. He removed the wooden logs and informed the railway officials. Another attempt was made soon after, around 6.30pm, to derail the Kathgodam-Lucknow Express on the same route. This time, too, the loco pilot stopped the train in time, and removed the obstruction before proceeding towards Lucknow. After the two incidents, GRP and RPF teams, along with maintenance staff, inspected the track. The section was declared safe for train operations by 7.30pm. An FIR has been registered against unidentified persons on a written complaint filed by railway authorities under section 150 (maliciously wrecking or attempting to wreck a train) of the Railway Act.
