Pitch Palooza returns to MSSU on April 17

The Small Business Development Center at Missouri Southern State University will hold the 2025 Pitch Palooza from 8 a.m to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 17, in the Cornell Auditorium at MSSU's Plaster School of Business. This is a free pitch competition open to MSSU and Crowder College students at the collegiate track level, as well as those in the community with startup concepts and those who are ready to scale up their existing business. There are some changes to the event this year. This year, the collegiate track is open to teams, said Katie Kelly, director of the Missouri Small Business Development Center at MSSU. The high school track has been eliminated. Winners of the collegiate track will receive a trophy and a certificate. Winners of the startup and scalability tracks will receive $2,000 as well as one-year memberships to the Joplin and Carthage chambers of commerce. A panel of three judges will review each pitch. "We're just really excited to witness the next wave of transformative ideas and boost collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship in our area," Kelly said. MSSU's Small Business Development Center receives honors

The Missouri Small Business Development Center at Missouri Southern State University recently received two awards at the 2025 MU Extension Business and Communities Conference in Kansas City. It received the 2024 Top Overall Performance Award, given to a Missouri development center that surpasses all performance goals and demonstrates exceptional impact in serving local small businesses. Katie Kelly, director of the SBDC at Southern, was presented with the Spirit Award. "We are incredibly honored to receive these awards, which reflect the hard work and dedication of our entire team," Kelly said in a statement. "Supporting small businesses is at the heart of what we do, and it's inspiring to see the positive impact our efforts have on entrepreneurs and our local economy."
