Exposure to multicultural environment can give broader outlook, thereby ensuring communal harmony, says CPI(M) leader

Exposure to a multilingual, multireligious, and multicultural environment would have given people a broader outlook, thereby fostering communal harmony. However, the present generation is denied such exposure as many of them study in educational institutions run by respective religious orders, regretted CPI(M) Dakshina Kannada secretary Muneer Katipalla here on Wednesday. Speaking at the peace committee meeting chaired by Home Minister G. Parameshwara, Mr. Katipalla said that although his mother tongue was Beary, he also speaks Tulu and Kannada as a native speaker, having grown up in a mixed cultural environment. It might be difficult to break the present practice easily. Still, the government should ensure that educational institutions teach students at least some Constitutional values to broaden their outlook, he said. Stating that communal disharmony was not an offshoot of a single cause, Mr. Katipalla said conflict of ideologies has been fomenting communal strife in the region. While law enforcement has curbed violence for the present, a permanent solution was needed, he said. Speaking earlier, Dharmika Parishat member Lakshmish Gabldka advocated for the police to stop the propagation of principles in the name of religion. With the police dealing firmly against hate messages on social media platforms, the situation was under control. Cultural programmes, including Yakshagana, should not become platforms to humiliate religions, he said. Maulana Abdul Aziz Darimi said Mangaluru was a land blessed by God, and it should become a land of peace and prosperity. Every religion should disown perpetrators of hate speech and crimes committed by their members. One more crime should not be the answer for a crime, he said, demanding stern action by authorities against the perpetrators. While Dakshina Kannada Muslim Central Committee vice-president Kodijal Ibrahim said everyone should stop supporting divisive forces, real estate entrepreneur Pushparaj Jain regretted that communal incidents inflict a severe dent on the region, which was on the growth path. Social Democratic Party of India representative Abdul Jaleel Krishnapura demanded a long-term plan to combat communalism. He said the masterminds behind violence should be brought to book, and not just those carrying out their instructions. Mohammed Kunhi from Shanthi Prakashana demanded a free hand to the administration to enforce law and order.

NHAI criticised for not ensuring NH 66 is free of potholes before monsoon in Mangaluru

The Tollgate Horata Samithi, Surathkal, has decried the apathy of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in ensuring National Highway 66 between Surathkal and Nanthoor becomes pothole-free before the onset of monsoon. 'NHAI has written the foreword for the highway death series with the tragic death of Surathkal Janath Colony resident Ashraf on the night of June 9, at Panambur,' claimed Samithi convener Muneer Katipalla. 'Riding a two-wheeler, Ashraf encountered a deep crater on NH 66 at Panambur and fell down. He was crushed by a tanker trailing that was behind his two-wheeler. Ashraf leaves behind his elderly mother, wife and children.' Communal deaths counted It appears only communal murders are counted in the coastal region while deaths on the highway remain unaccounted for, Mr. Katipalla regretted. Despite the Samithi repeatedly demanding restoration of the Surathkal-Nanthoor stretch of NH 66 before the onset of every monsoon, the NHAI does not act, thereby causing the deaths of several motorists every year. When the Samithi organised a peaceful dharna with their demands urging the elected representatives to act, the police booked an FIR against them while caution notices were pasted at night by the police on their doors. Member of Parliament Captain Brijesh Chowta, who should have been proactive in addressing this issue, has instead joined the bandwagon of those indulging in 'murder politics' in Dakshina Kannada district, Mr. Katipalla said. Sharing the stage with people who deliver provocative speeches to incite violence, the MP was also a part of the delegation of BJP leaders, including R. Ashok, B. Y. Vijayendra, and D. V. Sadananda Gowda, who 'threatened' the district administration that was struggling to restore peace in the district. With the onset of the monsoon, the NHAI might not be able to carry out repairs on the highway, and no one knows how many people would lose their lives in the coming days. Asking the MP not to follow in the footsteps of MLAs D Vedavyasa Kamath and Y. Bharath Shetty, Mr. Katipalla urged Capt. Chowta to take immediate steps to ensure the highways remain pothole-free. 'Potholes on highways do not discriminate between Hindus and Muslims,' he said.

U.T. Khader should focus on providing basic amenities to the common man in Ullal taluk, says CPI(M)

Communist Party of India (Marxist) Dakshina Kannada district secretary Muneer Katipalla on Tuesday said U.T. Khader, Mangaluru MLA, should focus on housing, healthcare, education and employment generation for the common man in his constituency at least from now onwards. He was speaking after inaugurating a public meeting demanding comprehensive development of Ullal taluk organised by CPI(M) Ullal and Mudipu divisions at Deralakatte here. Mr. Khader should put a leash on the mafias of healthcare, education and sand threatening the constituents, he said. If the MLA does not work in that direction, the CPI(M) would take the struggle to villages, he cautioned. Communist party cadre took out a rally to the meeting venue from Nitte Medical College and Natekal junction. Mr. Katipalla alleged that the lobbies of real estate, education, and healthcare were dominating Ullal taluk. Mr. Khader holds meeting with representatives of medical colleges, educational institutions and other entrepreneurs that culminate in policies protecting the interests of capitalists. There was nobody to care for the hard- working common man, including fishers, Dalits, tribal people, daily wage workers, transport workers and others. Wards of these hard-working people do not get admission in the private education institutions operating in the taluk that charge hefty fee for students. These lobbies prevent opening of government colleges, he said. Mr. Katipalla alleged that red soil mafia was looting precious mineral-rich red soil in the taluk while the sand mafia was swallowing kudrus (river islands) in the Netravathi. While the common man suffers from various shortcomings, Mr. Khader claims the taluk was on the development path showing the progress of private educational institutions, he chided. CPI(M) Ullal secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal said the meeting was organised with 28 demands of the common man. Other than contributions by former CPI(M) legislators, the taluk did not witness any development, he said. CPI(M) State committee member Yadav Shetty, senior leader Krishnappa Salian and others were present.

Real politics lies in raising people's issues, not in spectacle: CPM

Mangaluru: Politics should be about raising one's voice for the people, organising movements to safeguard their rights and not turning public life into a spectacle, said CPM Dakshina Kannada district secretary Muneer Katipalla . Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He was speaking at the inauguration of a two-day vehicle jatha at Mudipu Junction on Monday, ahead of a convention to assert rights on the Comprehensive Development of Ullal Taluk , to be held on April 29 in Deralakatte. Katipalla criticised the prevailing political culture in Tulunadu , where, he alleged, both BJP and Congress brass are more focused on grand kambala events, tiger dances, and glitzy sports meets than on addressing the people's basic needs. "Every present and former MLA now has their extravagant kambala show. In this noise, the genuine voice for education, employment, healthcare, and housing is getting drowned. Only CPM is standing with the people and consistently raising these issues," he said. He also pointed out that Ullal taluk has become a centre for private education and healthcare units. "The sand mafia thrives here. There is not even a single govt degree college for local youth. Housing for the poor is entirely neglected, and politics in the region surrendered to powerful vested interests," he added. CPM Ullal area secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal said that even five years after Ullal was declared a taluk, basic taluk-level infrastructure is still lacking. "Marginalised groups such as Dalits, autorickshaw drivers, slum dwellers, street vendors, and the homeless continue to be neglected," he said. He noted that the declaration of Ullal as a taluk remained symbolic, with no meaningful progress on the ground. The rally and upcoming convention aim to demand urgent infrastructure and services for the region.

Politicans are holding Kambalas, fancy events instead of working for public cause: CPI(M) leader

Leaders of Congress and the BJP are engaged in organising Kambalas, floodlight tournaments, tiger dance programmes etc., to be in public limelight instead of engaging in real politics of fighting for public causes, chided Communist Party of India (Marxist) Dakshina Kannada District Secretary Muneer Katipalla on Monday. He was speaking after launching a vehicle jatha organised to publicise a convention demanding the overall development of Ullal Taluk scheduled for April 29 at Deralakatte by CPI(M) Ullal and Mudipu Committees at Mudipu Junction on Monday, April 21. Mr. Katipalla said politics in Tulunadu was moving away from its real purpose wherein every MLA or former MLA heads local Kambala committees and engages in other fancy activities. Issues concerning the common thus have lost their vigour, he regretted. Mr. Katipalla said CPI(M) continues to fight for the public causes. It has consistently been raising voice and fighting for issues including education, employment, healthcare and housing, he said. Mr. Katipalla said of late the Ullal taluk has become a centre of private education and healthcare lobbies. The taluk has also come under the grip of sand and red soil mafia. Not a single government PU college was available in the taluk for the education of children in the area. The administration has conveniently forgotten providing housing to the poor and has surrendered to powerful lobbies. Speaking on the occasion, CPI (M) Ullal division committee secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal said even after five years of the taluk formation, no full-fledged taluk office building has come up. Taluk hospital, government first grade college, courts, stadium, polytechnic etc., were not provided. There was no one to address grievances of Dalits, autorickshaw drivers, residents of Kudrus, street vendors and those without houses. New taluk formation has remained only on paper, he said. As such, the party has organised the convention demanding the rights of people. CPI(M) District Secretarial Committee member Sukumar Thokkottu, leaders B.M. Bhat, Rafique Harekala and others were present. The jatha thereafter proceeded to Ira, Sajipa and Boliyar.
