New resource center aims to ease burden for families battling cancer

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — Families caring for loved ones with cancer may soon find some much-needed help thanks to a new community resource center launched by a Lowcountry nonprofit. Jeans Angels, founded by one of News 2's Remarkable Women finalists, Katrina Carpenter, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week to unveil the new facility designed to support caregivers and patients facing serious health-related challenges. 'This is a place where people can come and feel at home,' said Carpenter. 'It's not about handouts—it's about hope, healing, and love.' The center, located in Berkeley County, offers free food, clothing, cosmetics, home decor, and other essentials to those in need. While the space is open to everyone, it's especially focused on supporting caregivers of cancer patients a group often overlooked during such difficult journeys. The effort is deeply personal for Carpenter, who founded the nonprofit in memory of her mother, Jean, who passed away from cancer. She says the facility is her way of continuing her mother's legacy by spreading compassion and connection throughout the Tri-County area. Cancer survivor and volunteer Jloundia Pinckney shared how much the space could mean to others like her. 'It gives us hope—especially cancer survivors. We deal with anxiety and fear of it returning,' she said. 'But when we come here, we feel at home. We feel loved.' Carpenter hopes the space will become a lifeline for those feeling overwhelmed or alone. The organization also offers other services during the week, including free showers for those in need. 'Just call me the 'lady of love,'' Carpenter said. 'That's what we're trying to pour into this community—just love.' The center will officially open its doors Friday, with plans to serve its first 50 families navigating a cancer diagnosis. Jean's Angels partners with organizations to distribute essentials and holiday gear

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)–Jean's Angels, in partnership with Subaru and Operation Warm, held a coat and shoe giveaway in North Charleston on Saturday due to the drastic freezing temperatures. Hundreds of residents begin lining up outside the North Charleston Sports Complex at 6 a.m., ready to be the first to receive many essential items and gifts, such as jackets for kids, shoes, bed lining, blankets, towels, gift cards to Texas Roadhouse, and many more. Crews with Subaru donated over 500 jackets for the Subaru Loves to Help initiative. The campaign helps bring hope and confidence to people experiencing homelessness and urgent need situations. It's a task officials said they're glad to be a part of to help better serve the community 'It makes me feel amazing because we know we provide much-needed essential items to those who need them in the community. So, bring a smile to a child's face with a jacket. Their parents get a brand-new sheet of towels. I mean, it's fantastic, and anything we can do to make a difference in a community, that's what we're about,' said Katrina Carpenter, the founder of Jean's Angels. Officials said if you missed the event and still need a jacket and essential items for your child, please direct message Jean's Angels on social media for further assistance.
