(AP Photo/Kayla Wolf) Chicago Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong watches his home run during the seventh inning of a baseball game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Friday, May 2, 2025, in Milwaukee. (AP Photo/Kayla Wolf) MILWAUKEE (AP) — Pete Crow-Armstrong says he has his teammates to thank for sparking him to his fast start this season. Crow-Armstrong hit two homers in a 10-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night to give him eight this year, two off his 2024 total in 123 games as a rookie. He also already has 12 steals to go along with an .859 OPS. Advertisement The 23-year-old outfielder has delivered much of that production while batting seventh in the order, where he was hitting again Friday. 'It's so easy to hit in this lineup,' Crow-Armstrong said. 'I just feel so confident going up to the plate in the seven hole. Talk about flying under the radar. I feel like I can kind of hide in there in a way because it's so easy to want to go have a good at bat when you've got eight other guys who can really do it behind you and in front of you.' The Cubs are leading the majors with 6.1 runs per game with a lineup featuring plenty of power and speed. The Cubs have an MLB-leading 44 steals — they've been caught only six times — and rank third with 49 homers. Many of those homers have come in the bottom third of the order. Crow-Armstrong's two solo shots Friday gave the Cubs a total of 18 from the seventh, eighth or ninth hitters in the lineup. Advertisement 'That's why you score a lot of runs, is we're getting production from all over the lineup and from a number of different people,' Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. 'That's been a strength of this team so far.' Crow-Armstrong has showcased that with two two-homer games this season. He also went deep twice April 13 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He already had a reputation as an elite defensive outfielder heading into this season, but he was still unproven as a hitter. Crow-Armstrong batted .237 with a .286 on-base percentage, 10 homers, 47 RBIs and 21 steals last year. Through his first 33 games this season, Crow-Armstrong is hitting .271 with a .309 on-base percentage, eight homers and 23 RBIs. He homered off Quinn Priester in the second inning and Joel Payamps in the seventh on Friday, drawing chants of 'PCA' from the Cubs fans who made the trip to Milwaukee. Advertisement "It's nice kind of seeing myself grow into my power, or just being able to use it properly," Crow-Armstrong said. 'But doubles is what I want. At the end of the day, doubles is what I'm going for, hitting to the big part of the field. Again, to bring it back to the lineup, it's super comforting knowing that I've just got to get on first base. It's not all the time I have to be in scoring position, but a single usually turns into a double with a few of us on this team. Kind of knowing that is big.' ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/Kayla Wolf) NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Atlantic Sun Conference champion Lipscomb has hired Kevin Carroll as its men's basketball head coach. Carroll returns to Lipscomb after leading nearby Division II Trevecca Nazarene University to record-breaking success the last two years, including the most wins in program history and the school's first-ever South Region Poll ranking. He previously served as an assistant coach for the Bisons from 2019 to 2023, helping recruit and develop multiple all-conference players. Advertisement 'We are thrilled to welcome Kevin back to Lipscomb,' Lipscomb athletic director Philip Hutcheson Hutcheson said in a statement Tuesday. 'Kevin is an elite basketball mind. More importantly, he embodies the values of Lipscomb University and is gifted at building meaningful relationships with young people as evidenced by the deep connections he maintains with former and current players." Carroll replaces Lennie Acuff, who left to take the head coaching job at Samford. Acuff spent six seasons as head coach at Lipscomb, guiding the Bisons to their second NCAA Tournament appearance this past season with a 25-10 record overall record and a 14-4 mark in the Atlantic Sun. Lipscomb beat North Alabama to win the conference championship. The Bisons had three straight 20-win seasons under Acuff, who compiled a 110-82 record overall at Lipscomb. Advertisement "I have a tremendous amount of respect for the people who have come before me and the level of success that has been reached,' Carroll said. 'My staff and I will work tirelessly to maintain the standard that everyone has come to expect while shining a light on one of the top Christian universities in the country. I can't wait to get started … Horns Up!' ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP college basketball: and

(AP Photo/Kayla Wolf) BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Lennie Acuff, who coached Lipscomb to three straight 20-win seasons and an appearance in the 2025 NCAA Tournament, has been named successor to Bucky McMillan at Samford, athletic director Martin Newton announced Wednesday. Acuff had winning records in five of his six seasons at Lipcomb, with this past season's team sweeping the Atlantic Sun regular-season and tournament championships before losing to Iowa State in March Madness and finishing 25-10. Advertisement The 60-year-old Acuff is a native of Huntsville, about 90 minutes northeast of Birmingham, and was head coach at Division II Alabama-Huntsville from 1997-2019. Lipscomb athletic director Philip Hutcheson said Acuff couldn't pass up the chance to return to his home state, where his adult children and extended family live. 'While we are disappointed that he is leaving, we understand the attraction of being close to one's family and we wish him continued success in this new opportunity,' Hutcheson said. McMillan left Samford on Saturday to take over at Texas A&M. The Bulldogs were 22-11 this past season with a loss to George Mason in the NIT. They were 99-52 in five seasons under McMillan and drew national notice in the 2024 NCAA Tournament when they narrowly lost to Kansas in the first round. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season.
