BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Lennie Acuff, who coached Lipscomb to three straight 20-win seasons and an appearance in the 2025 NCAA Tournament, has been named successor to Bucky McMillan at Samford, athletic director Martin Newton announced Wednesday.
Acuff had winning records in five of his six seasons at Lipcomb, with this past season's team sweeping the Atlantic Sun regular-season and tournament championships before losing to Iowa State in March Madness and finishing 25-10.

The 60-year-old Acuff is a native of Huntsville, about 90 minutes northeast of Birmingham, and was head coach at Division II Alabama-Huntsville from 1997-2019. Lipscomb athletic director Philip Hutcheson said Acuff couldn't pass up the chance to return to his home state, where his adult children and extended family live.
'While we are disappointed that he is leaving, we understand the attraction of being close to one's family and we wish him continued success in this new opportunity,' Hutcheson said.
McMillan left Samford on Saturday to take over at Texas A&M. The Bulldogs were 22-11 this past season with a loss to George Mason in the NIT. They were 99-52 in five seasons under McMillan and drew national notice in the 2024 NCAA Tournament when they narrowly lost to Kansas in the first round.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bryan Reynolds hit a bases-loaded triple to cap a four-run third inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the skidding Miami Marlins 10-3 on Monday night for their season-high fourth straight win. Reynolds put the Pirates ahead 4-1 with a line drive to the gap in right-center field off Eury Perez (0-1), who was making his first major league start since Sept. 20, 2023, after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Panthers rout Oilers 6-1 in Game 3 to take a 2-1 lead in the Stanley Cup Final
SUNRISE, Fla. — Taking advantage of the Edmonton Oilers' worst performance in several weeks, the defending Florida Panthers pounced on mistakes to win Game 3 in a 6-1 rout Monday night and take a 2-1 series lead. Brad Marchand became the oldest player to score in each of the first three games of a final, while Sam Bennett added his NHL playoff-leading 14th goal after making a big hit on Edmonton's Vasily Podkolzin that contributed to the turnover to spring him on a breakaway. Marchand and Bennett have combined to score eight goals for Florida, which was dominant in just about every way. 'We ended up playing what Florida kind of wanted,' said Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner, who got pulled after allowing five goals on 23 shots. 'They were great tonight.' And it was not just Bennett and Marchand. Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Reinhart each got his first goal of the series, Aaron Ekblad scored to chase Skinner and Evan Rodrigues added the exclamation point in the waning minutes. 'We're a very deep team,' Marchand said. 'That's one of our strengths is the depth of the group from the front end to the back end to the goaltending.' A's set date for breaking ground on $1.75 billion Las Vegas stadium
The Athletics' eventual move to the Sin City will take another step closer to reality later this month when they break ground on the $1.75 billion stadium in Las Vegas. The nomadic baseball team is planning on a groundbreaking ceremony on June 23 at 8 a.m., the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Monday night. Construction on the Athletics' future home began back in late April, and the ceremony later this month will serve as a celebration for the organization and local officials.
