Sammy Stafura, former Panas star, traded to Pirates in Ke'Bryan Hayes trade deadline deal

With the MLB trade deadline set for Thursday night, teams across the league are looking to make moves to better their position for October. As was the case in 2021 and 2022, this deadline has local implications. Wednesday, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the Cincinnati Reds are acquiring third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes from the Pittsburgh Pirates, in exchange for reliever Taylor Rogers and shortstop Sammy Stafura. Stafura is a 2023 graduate of Walter Panas High School in Cortlandt Manor, where he helped the Panthers to a Section 1 title that season, before being drafted in the second round by the Reds that season. At 20 years old, Stafura is enjoying his best season in minor league ball in 2025. In 88 games for Class A Daytona, Stafura is hitting .262 with an OPS of .804. The shortstop has also gone 28 for 33 on stolen base attempts with 18 doubles, nine triples, four home runs, and 48 RBI. Familiar names from the Hudson Valley in Pirates organization Stafura is the ninth-ranked prospect in the Reds organization, according to MLB Pipeline, and will join a Pirates organization that already boasts some talent local to the Lower Hudson Valley. Henry Davis serves as the Pirates' backup catcher. He was drafted first overall back in 2021, after attending Fox Lane High School and the University of Louisville. Adonys Guzman, another catcher, was drafted in the fifth round this season out of the University of Arizona. Guzman attended Salesian High School in New Rochelle. In the swap, the Reds are picking up Hayes, who is among the best defensive third basemen in MLB, but has struggled offensively, hitting just .236. Rogers, a veteran left-handed reliever, will go with Stafura to Pittsburgh. In 2021, Josiah Gray (New Rochelle) was traded from the Dodgers to the Nationals in the Max Scherzer-Trea Turner blockbuster. A year later, Harrison Bader (Horace Mann) was sent from the Cardinals to the Yankees for Jordan Montgomery. Now, it's Stafura who finds himself on the move ahead of the July 31 deadline. Pirates send 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes to Reds for reliever Taylor Rogers, a prospect and cash

Associated Press PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates traded Gold Glove-winning third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes to the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday for veteran reliever Taylor Rogers, shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura and cash. The swap gives the Reds an elite defender at the hot corner with a manageable contract. The 28-year-old Hayes, a Gold Glove winner in 2023, has four-plus years left on the extension he signed with Pittsburgh in 2022. He will make $7 million in 2026 and 2027 and $8 million in 2028 and 2029, with a club option for $12 million in 2030. The son of former major leaguer Charlie Hayes and a first-round draft pick by the Pirates in 2015, Hayes struggled to find consistency at the plate following his splashy debut during the final month of the COVID-19-shortened season in 2020. He hit .376 with five homers in 24 games immediately after being called up, numbers that he didn't come close to matching while playing a full 162-game schedule. Hayes hit .236 with two home runs and 36 RBIs this season for the Pirates, who sit in last place in the NL Central thanks largely to an offense that ranks near the bottom or at the bottom in the majors in most significant statistical categories. The Pirates have several internal options to replace Hayes in the short-term, including Jared Triolo, who won a Gold Glove as a utility infielder in 2024. Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Pittsburgh's everyday shortstop this season, moved over to third for the Pirates' series finale against San Francisco on Thursday. Rogers remains an effective left-handed option out of the bullpen at 34. The 10-year veteran, an All-Star with Minnesota in 2021, is 2-2 with a 2.45 ERA in 40 appearances with the Reds this season. Stafura, 20, was a second-round pick by Cincinnati in 2023. He is hitting .262 with four home runs and 48 RBIs in 88 games with Class A Daytona this season. When the Pirates made a long-term investment in Hayes three years ago, both sides viewed Hayes as one of the cornerstones the franchise could rebuild around as it tried to hit reset under general manager Ben Cherington. Instead, Pittsburgh largely has spent the decade running in place. The high-water mark for Hayes came in 2023, when he had career highs in home runs (15), RBIs (61), doubles (31) and triples (7), while becoming one of the best defenders at his position. Back injuries limited him to 96 games last season and while Hayes has been a fixture in the lineup this season, he's been unable to be a difference-maker at the plate. The move gives the Pirates some flexibility to find a third baseman with more offensive upside in the offseason, though it's uncertain how the small-market club would address the position. Pittsburgh almost exclusively has used free agency to offer modest one-year contracts to veteran players in hopes of catching lightning in a bottle. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 2

Cincinnati Reds to acquire Ke'Bryan Hayes in trade with Pittsburgh Pirates

The Cincinnati Reds have acquired Gold Glove third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a stunning move before the 2025 MLB trade deadline. This trade will strengthen the Reds' defense as they chase a National League wild-card spot, while the Pirates gain assets to fuel their rebuild. Ke'Bryan Hayes' contract is a steal for Cincinnati, locking him in through 2029 at $7 million annually for 2026 and 2027, $8 million for 2028 and 2029, and a $12 million club option for 2030. With an average of 3.2 WAR per 162 games, Hayes brings significant value despite his offensive inconsistencies. On the other hand, the Pirates will receive veteran left-handed reliever Taylor Rogers and rising shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura in return. Sitting three games back in the NL wild-card race, the Reds desperately needed a boost at third base, where they rank 28th in MLB with a .620 OPS in 2025. Ke'Bryan Hayes, a 28-year-old defensive star who won the 2023 Gold Glove and has consistently ranked among the league's best fielders, will be impactful. His glove work, highlighted by leading all major leaguers in Outs Above Average over the past six seasons, instantly upgrades Cincinnati's infield. The move also allows the Reds to shift Noelvi Marte to the outfield, addressing their need for a right-handed outfield bat. Taylor Rogers, a 34-year-old reliever, brings a 2.45 ERA across 40 appearances and 33 innings in 2025. A 2021 All-Star, Rogers is a free agent after this season, giving Pittsburgh the option to retain him or flip him for additional assets. Sammy Stafura is a 20-year-old shortstop prospect for the side. A 2023 second-round pick, Stafura hit .262 with four home runs and 48 RBIs in 88 games at Class-A Daytona this season. His speed (59 stolen bases in 193 minor-league games) and plate discipline (135 walks) make him a high-upside addition to Pittsburgh's farm system. This trade reflects the Reds' all-in push for the playoffs, leveraging Hayes' defensive skills to address a their weakness. For the Pirates, shedding Hayes' $36 million commitment through 2029 frees up resources, while Stafura and internal options like Jared Triolo and Isiah Kiner-Falefa pave the way forward.
