Zahid confident Kedah ready for leadership change

ALOR STAR: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is confident that the people of Kedah are ready to bring about a change in state leadership for the sake of a more stable and prosperous future. Zahid, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, said that after two challenging and uncertain years, it is time for Kedahans to place their trust in leadership that genuinely prioritises their welfare and long-term interests. "What have the people of Kedah witnessed over the past two years? I pray and hope that things will change. A drastic shift is never easy, but it is not impossible. "InsyaAllah, Kedah will return to better leadership, one that truly cares for the people. Understand? Even if you don't, it's okay," he quipped during his speech at the Kedah Regional Development Authority (Keda) 4P and Rural Youth Planning and Implementation Committee Convention at Albukhary International University (AIU) here today. Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, expressed hope that the people would remain steadfast and committed in championing comprehensive and consistent reform. He said the role of the people is vital in ensuring the change they hope for becomes a reality through wise and deliberate choices. "If we aspire for change, strive for change, and keep working towards change, then change will come to us sooner rather than later," he said.

Zahid calls for 5G network expansion to rural areas

ALOR SETAR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called for the expansion of 5G network coverage beyond urban centres to include rural areas. Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, said digital inclusion is a fundamental requirement for holistic rural development. "In areas under the Kedah Regional Development Authority (Keda), Felcra, and other rural settlements, 5G should not be a luxury; it is a necessity. Even in villages, our children need fast internet for education and entrepreneurship," he said during the opening of the Keda 4P and Rural Youth Planning and Implementation Committee Convention at Albukhary International University (AIU) here today. He added that the ministry would hold discussions with the Communications Ministry and the Digital Ministry to coordinate the expansion of 5G infrastructure in strategic rural locations with development potential. "High-speed internet access will empower rural students, strengthen youth entrepreneurship, and enhance administrative efficiency in local communities," he said. Meanwhile, Zahid reminded grassroots leaders to remain present on the ground and not rely solely on reports. "We must be leaders who are with the people, not just on paper. We need to hear their concerns directly, not just through office memos," he said. He also said that integrity must be at the heart of rural leadership, warning that leadership without trust is like a house without pillars, bound to collapse under pressure. KEDA boosts durian planting in Pedu to spur agrotourism

PADANG TERAP: The Kedah Regional Development Authority (KEDA) will strengthen durian cultivation through the Integrated Village Economic Development Project (PROSPEK) in Pedu to further revitalise the agrotourism sector in the subdistrict. KEDA chairman Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the project, which involves 12 villages in the subdistrict, has so far succeeded in increasing the income and quality of life of the local residents. 'Our aim is to revitalise existing durian orchards... so facilities, roads, and fertilisers are provided, and we are looking for ways to clean up these orchards so that when durian season arrives, more people can come here and visit the orchards — that's our goal. 'It's a good programme and I want to review the status of the 12 villages in the Pedu subdistrict so we can refine it further... there are also homestays, so people can come and eat durians right here,' he said after attending the Durian Festival@Pedu 2025 programme here today. He said KEDA will improve infrastructure and farm roads in the involved villages, and also streamline the durian collection process in the orchards to make it more efficient. According to Mahdzir, as of now, 280 hectares of the king of fruits are cultivated by 309 PROSPEK participants, yielding over 300 tonnes of durians comprising both clone varieties and kampung (village) durians. He said PROSPEK Pedu began in 2022 with a five-year development phase and a total project cost of RM8 million. It is a project under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development.
