Bizarre erection medicine ad-read sparks hilarious exchange between Mets announcers

New York Mets announcer Gary Cohen is known for his flawless delivery, whether he's calling game action or reading an advertisement for chewable erectile disfunction medicine. The trick, as he revealed to broadcast partner Keith Hernandez on Saturday, is not thinking too hard. Case in point: Cohen was reading a few spots during the Mets' 8-2 win over the visiting Colorado Rockies on Saturday when he came across one for BlueChew. '… By BlueChew,' Cohen said, adding the company tag line: 'Chew it and do it.' Hernandez, the color commentator and beloved former Mets first baseman, couldn't help but ask: 'What did you mean by that?' Cohen didn't struggle for an answer. Gary Cohen: "By BlueChew. Chew it and do it." Keith Hernandez: "What did you mean by that?" Gary Cohen: "I just read the copy here. I try to give it a good read. Try and give the advertiser everything that they paid for, Keith. And then it's somebody else's problem." #MLB — Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) May 31, 2025 'I just read the copy here,' Cohen calmly told Hernandez. 'I try to give it a good read. Try and give the advertiser everything that they paid for, Keith. And then it's somebody else's problem.' The exchange provided fans with a few laughs, given that BlueChew is an ED medication. So while 'chew it and do it' is a rather straightforward tag line, Cohen somehow managed to keep his dignity in the face of Hernandez's prodding with the help of some willful ignorance. 'I did read it well, didn't I?' Cohen asked. 'Oh, you're a champ,' Hernandez responded without giving away anything. 'You're a pro.' In addition to their collective laughter, Mets fans responded to the exchange by reasserting their opinion that Cohen, Hernandez and Ron Darling remain the best announcers in baseball. 'The Mets have the best booth and it's not even close,' one fan wrote on X. Another added: 'I don't know how I will ever survive without these guys at the booth. They have truly left the most largest of shoes to ever fill. It doesn't get better than these guys. They defined my childhood they have been with me my whole life.'

Comment Adds Fuel to Subway Series Anticipation

The Subway Series doesn't begin for another 12 days, but clearly the SNY broadcast booth is warming up for it. On Sunday during the Mets' game in St. Louis, SNY analyst Keith Hernandez offered a now-familiar dig aimed squarely at Yankee Stadium. After a Mets batter lofted a shallow fly ball to right field, Hernandez quipped, 'Needless to say, that would've been a home run in Yankee Stadium.' Advertisement With the Mets set to visit Yankee Stadium on May 16–18, and Juan Soto returning for the first time since leaving the Yankees in free agency, the rivalry already feels heated. Soto's record-setting 15-year, $765 million deal with the Mets sent shockwaves through the league this winter. It also stirred plenty of bitterness in the Bronx and even some in Queens. The 26-year-old outfielder's brief but dominant stint in pinstripes only deepened the sting. Now, he'll walk back into Yankee Stadium as a visiting star, wearing orange and blue. He has already told reporters he is expecting the worst when he returns. Yankees fans have already given a glimpse of what is in store. Advertisement Whether Hernandez intended to fan the flames or was just riding an old punchline, the timing couldn't be better for the Mets. For Yankees fans, it may just add another reason to pack the Stadium and make their voices heard when Soto steps to the plate. Keith Hernandez has odd moment during Mets game: ‘I know you're not supposed to say it'

Keith Hernandez had a point to make. The legendary Mets broadcaster described Cardinals outfielder Victor Scott II's attempt at bunting for a hit as a 'drag bunt' but seemed to hint at some censorship on SNY's broadcast in the process. 'This is shades of Bud Harrelson, who was a terrific — I know you're not supposed to say it. They call it a different term, but in our day it was a drag bunt,' said Hernandez as the Mets were swept in the doubleheader, 6-5 and 5-4. Scott's bunt single to third base occurred in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, where he reached first against rookie pitcher Blake Tidwell. Hernandez's comments did leave some confused as never specified what the new terminology is. 'What do they call it now? I've never heard another term,' one commentator on the NY Post Sports YouTube channel asked. Typically, a drag bunt occurs when a left-handed batter begins running to first base while 'dragging' his bat with him to bunt and run simultaneously to get on base or sacrifice himself for a runner to advance a base. 3 Victor Scott reached first base after a successful drag bunt. Getty Images Drag, also the word for a form of entertainment that plays on traditional notions of gender, often including male performers in women's clothing, has become controversial in American culture. However, there's been no such controversy surrounding the phrase 'drag bunt.' Hernandez had previously been in some hot water for some references to border control on SNY airwaves in 2023 and then again for bringing up election fraud conspiracy theories in 2024. 3 Keith Hernandez is careful to not use the word drag on live airways. The Mets, who are 22-13 and are tied for the third-best record in MLB, open up a three-game set with the Diamondbacks on Monday.
