Aussies shiver through 2025's coldest night
Australia has battled through 2025's coldest night, as NSW recorded its most bone-chilling weather temperature in over seven years. Weatherzone reports temperatures of -13.2 degrees recorded at Thredbo Top Station in NSW overnight were the harshest across the country, beating other locations by more than 5.5 degrees. It falls just short of the -13.5 degree record recorded in the small town of Liawenee in Tasmania in 2024. Australia's other seven states also recorded shivering temperatures overnight. Mount Hotham in Victoria recorded the next coldest temperature of -7.6 degrees, followed by Canberra's -6.1 degrees and the -4.3 degrees in Queensland's southern town of Applethorpe. The warmest temperatures were still considered shivering in the Northern Territory and Western Australia as Alice Springs Airport hit 1.4 degrees and Forrest reaching 2.4. A popular skiing destination, Thredbo's ridiculous numbers came due to a combination of its weather site being at a 1957 metre elevation couple with an unlikely windless night that contributes to harsher temperatures. Around 10cm of fresh falling snow over the weekend also helped to develop the extremely chilling conditions. However, the nation can expect to move away slightly from these temperatures for the rest of the week as the end of winter nears, with the lowest prospective temperatures being around -1 degrees in Canberra and Albury-Wodonga on Tuesday. Darwin remains the most unaffected by cold weather with conditions only reaching a low of 18 as maximum temperatures look to reach more than an astounding 33 degrees by Wednesday. Conditions are cooler in Brisbane and Sydney hovering between 10 and 13 degrees through the weeks, but showers are expected to remain. Temperatures in Hobart, Melbourne and Adelaide remain much lower between 2-6 degrees despite the much sunnier conditions. The freezing change comes as millions of Australians brace for a huge rain system, expected to bring a four-day drenching this week. Sydney is tipped to receive totals of 20mm, 30mm, 25mm, and 20mm in the four days from Monday. Brisbane could get up to 55mm of rain across Wednesday and Thursday. Outside of the capital cities, Port Macquarie is looking at forecasts of up to 105mm of rain between Tuesday and Thursday, the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts. Coolangatta could cop some of the heaviest rainfall, with the bureau predicting up to 60mm of rain on Wednesday and another 50mm the day after.
