AMD expands R&D footprint with state-of-the-art Malaysian facility
GEORGE TOWN: AMD today inaugurated its new state-of-the-art office and engineering lab facility in Bayan Lepas here.
This marks a significant milestone in AMD's commitment to expanding its global business services and engineering presence in Malaysia.
The new office at GBS by the Sea, which spans 209,000 square feet, is designed to support over 1,200 employees.
It features open workspaces and state-of-the-art engineering labs to drive advances in semiconductor design.
The launch was inaugurated by chief minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Also present were Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) chief executive officer Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, AMD global operations senior vice president Keivan Keshvari and AMD Penang site lead Chuang-Li Khoo.
Chow said as AMD celebrates its over five decades presence in Penang, the milestone stood as a strong testament to Penang's position as a sustainable and thriving investment destination.
"As global trends shift rapidly toward frontier technologies such as Al, the Penang government, via InvestPenang, remains committed to supporting forward-looking investors like AMD in these transformative fields," he said.
Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim said AMD's new facility in Penang was a testament to the enduring and evolving partnership between Malaysia and a global technology leader.
"From our initial collaboration in manufacturing five decades ago to this significant investment in integrated circuit design and high-value services, AMD's journey mirrors Malaysia's own progression up the semiconductor value chain.
"By anchoring R&D and advanced capabilities here, AMD is not only creating high-quality jobs but also fostering a dynamic ecosystem where local talent and firms can thrive alongside global innovators," he said.
He added that aligned with the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, the National Semiconductor Strategy and the 13th Malaysia Plan, MIDA was proud to have supported AMD's strategic growth in Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Keivan said the opening of the advanced facility underlined AMD's long-term commitment to Malaysia's thriving semiconductor ecosystem.
The new office will enable AMD to develop, build and deliver the next generation of high-performance, adaptive and Al computing solutions across the AMD portfolio while supporting Malaysia's continued growth as a hub for technological innovation.
With expanded capabilities and a focus on innovation, the Penang facility will play a key role in supporting AMD growth while contributing meaningfully to Malaysia's semiconductor ecosystem, Keivan added.
