Putatan's Riuh Samah is Betitik champ

Published on: Tue, Aug 12, 2025 Text Size: Tuaran: Riuh Samah from Putatan emerged champion of the Sabah-level Betitik Final held in conjunction with the Sabah Bajau Sama Cultural Festival 2025 at the community's cultural centre here, Saturday. The group beat seven other teams with a score of 78 per cent, taking home RM5,000.
Advertisement Second place went to Tanjung Keramat Putatan with 77.8 per cent and RM3,500, while Sri Mengkabong from Tuaran placed third with 76 per cent, winning RM2,500. Sri Samah from Kota Belud won the Best Costume Award, while Soro Derio from Putatan took the Most Promising Young Player Award. Five groups received consolation prizes of RM1,000 each, namely Sri Ketiau (Putatan), Denyut Tradisi from Kelab Betitik Kampung Unggun Jaya (Kota Kinabalu), Sri Samah, Soro Derio and Anak Kedidi Bedinakan (Papar). Betitik is the traditional music of the Bajau Sama community in Sabah, played mainly during events to announce upcoming occasions such as the malam berinai and wedding ceremonies. It is usually performed in the evening and not during mourning periods or times of hardship, using instruments such as the wan (drum), gong, bebandil and kulintang.
