No more hiding: Undercover units to storm Kelantan-Thailand border in major crime clampdown
KOTA BARU, June 10 — The Kelantan police will increase the number of undercover intelligence officers in the border area soon to combat cross-border crime that continues to occur despite tightened security controls. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the matter would be discussed with General Operations Force (GOF) Southeast Brigade commander, Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid, in a meeting tomorrow. He said this action is deemed necessary since cross-border crime is still occurring, although the detected cases were isolated. 'There are arrests almost every day. So, we will change the operational method by increasing the number of plainclothes intelligence units, involving GOF members and police, to patrol the border area,' he said. 'The approach is being taken because most people only feel intimidated when they see the presence of uniformed security personnel, while criminals can take advantage of locations with little visible security surveillance,' he said after attending the Kelantan Contingent Ibadah Korban event at the Kelantan contingent police headquarters here today. Commenting further, he explained that the distance between the GOF control posts, which can be as far as two to three km apart, is also why smugglers can still slip through incognito. 'The Malaysia-Thailand border spans 136km, while the area under Kelantan police surveillance is 91km. Hence, it is not easy to monitor it completely because each post is far apart. 'The big gaps open up space for people to commit cross-border crimes unnoticed, since crossing the river by boat only takes a minute,' he said. According to him, in the one-week period from May 31 to June 8, a total of 13 arrests related to cross-border crimes were made under Section 5(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. 'The most common reasons often given by perpetrators are to visit family, retrieving vehicle keys and so on. Only two cases (a few) involved entertainment-related purposes,' he said. — Bernama

KOTA BARU, June 4 — Kelantan recorded a 15.1 per cent rise in its crime index in 2024, driven mainly by increases in violent and property-related offences, according to state police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat. He stated that a total of 2,296 cases were reported between January and December last year, up from 1,994 cases in 2023, representing an increase of 302 cases. Violent crime rose by 8.5 per cent from 390 to 423 cases, while property crime climbed 16.7 per cent from 1,604 to 1,872 cases, he added. 'Among the most concerning trends is the spike in rape cases, which rose 20.7 per cent, from 130 in 2023 to 157 cases last year,' said Mohd Yusoff during the 2025 Kelantan Police Chief Town Hall Discussion, themed 'Youth Awareness: Preventing Social Ills, Shaping the Future', held at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan. Armed robbery without firearms also increased by 25.6 per cent from 43 to 54 cases, while assault cases saw a more modest rise of 6.8 per cent from 147 to 157 cases. At the same time, several violent crimes recorded significant drops. Murder cases fell by 55.6 per cent from nine to four, and armed robbery involving firearms dropped 60 per cent from five to two instances. In the property crime category, theft remained the most significant contributor with 732 cases in 2024, up 50.9 per cent from 485 cases the previous year. House break-ins also rose sharply by 41.7 per cent with 628 cases, while car thefts increased by 23.3 per cent from nine to 12. However, motorcycle thefts declined significantly by 46.9 per cent from 128 cases in 2023 to 68 last year. — Bernama

Bachok police: Woman arrested over acid attack that left Kelantan spa owner severely burned
KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 — Police have arrested a woman believed to be linked to an acid attack on a spa owner in Beris Kubur Besar, Bachok, which left the victim with serious burns. According to The New Straits Times, the suspect was detained at around 10pm yesterday in Kuala Krai and is expected to be brought to the Bachok Magistrates' Court this morning for a remand application. Confirming the arrest, Bachok district police chief Superintendent Mohamad Ismail Jamaluddin declined to comment further, saying a full statement would be issued by Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat in due course. The victim, 27-year-old Nor Faziera Muda, was attacked by three individuals — two women and a man — last Saturday while she was opening her salon for a scheduled massage appointment. She was accompanied by her young son at the time. The attack took place at about 7.20pm near a convenience store in Tawang, where an unidentified individual splashed her with a corrosive liquid before fleeing the scene. She suffered severe burns to her shoulder, back, arms and legs, and underwent a six-hour surgery. Nor Faziera is currently in stable condition and receiving treatment at the Burns Unit of Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) in Kubang Kerian. Police are also looking into the victim's claim that acid had previously been poured outside her premises as a form of intimidation, although no official report was lodged about that incident. The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon, an offence that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, along with whipping or a fine.

Kelantan on high alert: Anthrax fears drive border clampdown on illegal livestock ahead of Aidiladha
KOTA BARU, May 15 — Kelantan police have tightened border security to curb cattle smuggling ahead of Hari Raya Aidiladha, following reports of anthrax-related deaths in Thailand earlier this month. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said his department is working closely with relevant agencies, including the Department of Veterinary Services and border authorities, to prevent the illegal entry of livestock into the country. 'The deaths have been linked to the slaughter and consumption of raw meat in Don Tan district, Mukdahan province, Thailand, which borders Laos, according to a report by Thailand's Department of Disease Control. 'Kelantan police continue to strengthen intelligence gathering, patrols and inter-agency cooperation to safeguard national security and combat smuggling,' he told reporters after the monthly assembly at the Kelantan police contingent headquarters today. Mohd Yusoff also reminded operators and livestock farmers not to bring in cattle through illegal routes and to use only authorised checkpoints at the ICQS Complex to ensure proper health screening is conducted. He stressed that livestock smuggling not only harms the local livestock industry but also poses a risk of spreading infectious diseases to humans. Mohd Yusoff added that the Border Security Coordination Committee's Working Group Meeting with the National Security Council has identified the need to enhance enforcement against livestock smuggling activities. Between 2024 and April 2025, a total of 390 cows and 25 buffaloes were seized in 36 cases, with an estimated value of nearly RM4 million. In a related development, Mohd Yusoff confirmed that police have received information regarding alleged abuse of power involving border enforcement personnel. 'Preliminary information indicates possible misconduct related to smuggling, including livestock. A special task force has been formed and investigations are underway by the Kelantan police intelligence division,' he said. — Bernama
