We're all really different from Gary Lineker… here's what he said after we got the job, say new MOTD hosts

GARY LINEKER'S replacement has big boots to fill – so it is probably a good job that Match Of The Day has THREE new hosts. Kelly Cates, Gabby Logan and Mark Chapman make up the new presenting team who will take over from Saturday. 6 6 6 But they insist that aside from fresh faces, not much is changing on BBC One's flagship football show. It helps that we're all different from Gary, in that he goes in with a profile of his own as an England legend. An ex-player taking over would be a more direct comparison Kelly And they hope to avoid being compared to TV legend and former Spurs and England striker Gary, 64, who quit the Beeb in May over an antisemitism row 'It helps that we're all really different from Gary, in that he goes in with a profile of his own as an England legend,' Kelly, an established sports broadcaster, says. 'It's a very different career path. An ex-player taking over would be a more direct comparison.' Gabby, 52, adds: 'The focus is only on us because Gary's leaving and he's such a huge name. 'We're nowhere near the most important people on the show. Titan of broadcasting 'The most important thing is the football, then it's the pundits and what they think about it. 'What people will notice is that there isn't much change.' Dad-of-four Gary announced last November that he would be stepping down from the BBC's beloved football highlights show after 26 years at the helm. He bowed out with an emotional final episode three months ago, and anchoring next year's World Cup coverage was supposed to be his Beeb swansong. Wayne Rooney lands £800k deal to be Match of the Day pundit as he and wife Coleen become British TV's new power couple But he fully cut ties with the Corporation in May after being accused of antisemitism — having shared a video online saying 'Zionism explained in two minutes', which contained a rat emoji. He denied knowing that it was an anti-Jewish slur and said it was a 'genuine mistake'. In the two-and-a-half decades before that sorry ending, Gary had firmly established himself as a titan of British sports broadcasting. He endeared himself to millions of viewers with his natural charm, wit and knowledge of the beautiful game. No pressure, then, on whoever was to be chosen as his successor. BBC veteran 'Chappers', as presenter Mark is affectionately known, quickly emerged as a frontrunner — having hosted Match Of The Day 2 on Sunday nights since 2013, while also occasionally covering for Gary. Another favourite was Gabby, who has sporadically hosted MOTD as well as covering major sporting events, including the Olympics, since joining the Beeb in 2007. BBC chiefs instead chose to make them two thirds of a new rotating team of presenters, along with well-respected Sky Sports footie and Radio 5 Live host Kelly. They were announced as the new hosts in January, but until the big reveal they had been forced to keep schtum. So much so that mum-of-two Kelly, 49, even kept it a secret from her Liverpool legend dad Sir Kenny Dalglish, 74, as he has loose lips. We set up a WhatsApp group called The Match Of The Day Three, which sounded like a vigilante group, or like we've been wrongly incarcerated for something Gabby The trio risked being rumbled, though, after they were spotted out for dinner together. Kelly revealed: 'We thought, 'Should we do that? Does it just draw attention to ourselves?'. I got a text from a friend of my sister's saying, 'Somebody has seen you and Gabby Logan out together!'. Chappers was there, with his hoodie up and bobble hat.' The three of them had soon set up a WhatsApp group to keep in contact. Gabby said: 'I called it The Match Of The Day Three, which we quickly realised sounded like some kind of vigilante group, or like we've been wrongly incarcerated for something.' As well as the presenting shake-up, bosses have also decided to make a slight change to the Sunday show — dropping '2' from the title and simply calling it Match Of The Day. 6 6 And the European footie highlights version will be called Match Of The Day: Champions League. Married mum-of-two Gabby says: 'In many weeks, Match Of The Day 2 has been a stronger line-up. Why is the Saturday Match Of The Day seen as the top job? I'm intrigued, really, because I've never viewed Saturdays and Sundays as any different Mark 'Match Of The Day is Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays [for Champions League highlights]. It's not Match Of The Day 1, Match Of The Day 2, it's just Match Of The Day. 'Want people to care' 'That will be the most noticeable change, apart from not having Gary involved.' Dad-of-three Mark, 51, will host this Saturday's show — but does not think it is more important than the Sunday edition, which typically has fewer games to analyse. He says: 'Why is it the top job? I'm intrigued, really, because I've never viewed Saturdays and Sundays as any different.' The presenting trio lifted the lid on getting the gig for the first time in a chat with Radio Times, before the new Premier League season starts on Friday night. Kelly reveals she was first told about the possibility of being the host over a lunch — unlike Gabby, who was sounded out by text. Some 33million footie fans tune into the MOTD over the season — and in 2015, it won a Guinness World Record for being the longest-running football TV show, on air since 1964. But Kelly was taken aback by the huge level of interest in the role. She says: 'I didn't think there would be as much focus as there has been. I thought, probably very naively, that Gary would take it all as the outgoing person. I didn't realise people would be as interested as they are. 'Neighbours, friends, kids' parents, people who wouldn't normally have been interested in anything I did — suddenly they are.' Kelly was quizzed over BBC Chairman Samir Shah's remarks in an interview earlier this year, that MOTD 'should be built around analysis' rather than highlights. She said: 'I don't think he has a say in how it's made. 'He's just giving an opinion as a football fan — which is fine, that's what you want people to do. 'You want people to care about Match Of The Day and how it's made. What people like about the show is the fact that it's about the football — it's about the highlights. That's the most important thing.' Inevitably, the question of social-media conduct was raised, following numerous run-ins between Gary and the BBC when he aired his views on topics such as migrants and Palestine. 'In best of hands' Kelly says: 'I don't think I've ever really weighed in that much on anything that isn't either about football or something quite silly. That's not how I've ever used social media.' For eight years, Gary was the Beeb's top earner — raking in £1.35million in 2024/25. But Gabby remained tight-lipped on whether the trio would be shooting up the BBC wage list — saying people must wait until the figures drop next July to find out. Asked if Gary had contacted his successors since they landed the roles, Mark said: 'I saw him not long ago and he said he had been asked in an interview whether he'd given us tips. 6 'And he said, 'Why? What? What on earth would I be doing phoning you three up to offer you tips? Why would I be deemed to be that arrogant to do that?'. 'Experience-wise, we've all been doing it for a long time. 'I feel a bit sorry for Gary being asked that question because he's on a hiding to nothing. When I started doing stuff for Sky, the first person I spoke to was Kelly, to get a lay of the land, not how to do the job.' Gary spoke fondly of his successors during his final broadcast, telling viewers: 'The programme is in the best of hands.' It is then, perhaps, no surprise that he has not felt the need to offer any pearls of wisdom. Gabby said: 'I'm sure if Gary had something very practical he wanted to pass on, we'd all receive it gratefully. 'But as Mark says, he doesn't feel he needs to. I know where the biscuits are kept.' Let's hope Kelly, Gabby and Mark can continue serving up treats like their predecessor as the new season kicks off this weekend.

New Match of the Day presenter Gabby Logan makes a veiled swipe at predecessor Gary Lineker - following his departure from the show after he shared anti-Semitic social media post

New Match of the Day presenter Gabby Logan has made a veiled swipe at her predecessor Gary Lineker. Gabby, 52, is a part of the new three-person presenting line-up for the football show alongside Kelly Cates, 49, and Mark Chapman, 51, following Lineker's departure. The former England player, 64, who had presented Match of the Day since 1999, was forced to stand down in May after a social media furore when he shared a post that contained an anti-Semitic symbol. Now his replacement has waded into the controversy. Asked if her use of social media would change in light of Lineker's fall from grace, Gabby told the Radio Times: 'I've been conducting myself on social media while working at the BBC for nearly two decades, so it doesn't change anything. 'The broadcaster is probably under the most scrutiny of any in the country because of the way it's funded and because it's accountable to the public. That's how it should be. We strive to have the highest standards. Hopefully, we'll just get on with our jobs.' She also said that she had been subjected to abuse on social media and said she was 'glad' that it wasn't available when she was starting her career. 'If people are just slinging mindless and ill-thought-out abuse, that's not helping anybody,' she said. 'When I first went online at the 2010 World Cup, I was opening Pandora's Box and reading awful things about myself, which is a horrible feeling at first. You have to learn how to deal with it and that takes time.' 'I'm glad I had a few years where people actually had to get a pen out – or a quill – and write a letter and post it to the BBC.' The new Match of the Day trio confirmed that they will be rotating presenters and not appear on-screen together, with Mark presenting the first episode of the Premier League season on Saturday. Gabby will host Match of the Day's Sunday night programme this week, while Kelly will host UEFA Super Cup highlights show on Wednesday and look ahead to the new Premier League season. Mark and Gabby both say that Lineker hadn't offered them any tips on taking over the show. Mark said that he had recently spoken with his predecessor who explained why. He said: 'I saw him not long ago and he said that he had been asked in an interview whether he'd given us tips. And he said, 'Why? What? What on earth would I be doing phoning you three up to offer you tips? Why would I be deemed to be that arrogant to do that?''.' Gabby added: 'I'm sure if Gary had something very practical he wanted to pass on, we'd all receive it gratefully. But as Mark says, he doesn't feel he needs to. I know where the biscuits are kept.' Their new co-presenter Kelly also hit out at the BBC Chair Samir Shah who recently told The Sunday Times that football programme should 'should not be built around highlights. It should be built around analysis.' Kellly said: 'I don't think he has a say in how it's made. I think what people like about the show is the fact that it's about the football – it's about the highlights. That's the most important thing.' The triumvirate dressed up chic for their photoshoot ahead of the show's return. Mark donned a grey, long-sleeved zip-up jacket with a stand collar, a plain white shirt, and dark trousers. Gabby went for a navy blue dress with a V-neckline and what looks like a silk or satin fabric. Meanwhile, Kelly wore a slate blue blazer matching with her pants. In one photo, she is holding a vintage-style leather football in a nod to the game's rich heritage. According to The Telegraph, Mark - who has been a regular on the BBC for a number of years, usually anchoring Match of the Day 2 coverage on a Sunday - will be joined by the returning Alan Shearer and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney. Wayne has been out of management since leaving Plymouth Argyle by mutual consent on New Year's Eve after a challenging seven-month spell in charge. It was his fourth managerial role in as many years, following stints with Derby Count , DC United and Birmingham City. The 39-year-old has made no secret of his enjoyment of punditry since stepping back from coaching, appearing on Amazon Prime Video for Champions League coverage and joining the BBC as a guest on Match of the Day. He will will earn £800,000 over two years with the BBC. The tidy sum would make him among the highest earners at the organisation, with the BBC's latest annual report showing only seven people earned more than £400,000 a year. They included Shearer, who was third on the list after taking home an estimated £440,000. However, their earnings are dwarfed by what Lineker was on: around £1.35million per year. Additionally, the recent report claims that Match of the Day's sister programme on Sunday will drop the '2' from its title, with the first edition of the rebranded show set to be aired this weekend.

Inside Sky Sports' revolutionary plan for Premier League on TV: 'Supersized Super Sundays', a new 'Multiview' Red Zone-style goals show... and a new role for Jamie Carragher as Roy Keane postpones his 'quit' threat

Sky Sports are to revolutionise their Premier League coverage, with NFL Red Zone-style action, fan analysis - and two thirds of the BBC 's Match of the Day team. The broadcaster today unveiled plans for the forthcoming campaign, in which it will screen 215 matches - up from 128 last season. At a media launch, it emerged that Roy Keane has been secured for another season, despite the former Manchester United man earlier voicing his concerns about continuing in punditry. Kelly Cates and Mark Chapman, who will share presenting duties of the BBC's iconic Saturday night show from this weekend, will form part of Sky's team with Chapman adding Premier League matches to his existing Carabao Cup schedule. Cates and Chapman were announced as replacements for outgoing Gary Lineker, along with Gabby Logan. At times on Sundays this year, Sky will show four games at the same time via 'Multiview'. Like the iconic American Football show, one presenting team will cover all four and will switch between games. Matches displaced by European competition will kick off at 2pm on Sunday. And there will be a further new arrival in the shape of Fanalysis, where each Premier League club will be represented by one of their own supporters. At the end of what the broadcaster is calling 'supersized Super Sundays', Jamie Carragher will front a reaction show called Extra Time. Kasabian, the Leicester-based rock band, will provide the soundtrack. Chief Sports Officer for Sky, Jonathan Licht, said: 'This is a landmark season for Sky Sports and the Premier League. For the first time, we'll bring fans over 215 live matches, including every 2pm kick-off on Super Sunday. 'We're introducing new innovations like Multiview, new programmes like Super Sunday: Extra Time, and a new look schedule for Sky Sports News. 'From the moment the season kicks off, we'll be helping fans stay across all the biggest stories and making sure they never miss a moment of the action. 'To better serve the millions of fans who watch and engage with Premier League content across TV, social and digital platforms, Sky Sports News has a revamped schedule.'

Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan, and Kelly Cates will share the load of presenting the much-loved show, which returns on Saturday. Mark Chapman ‘will be first of new trio to host Match of the Day'

Mark Chapman will present the BBC's first Match Of The Day Saturday highlights programme this weekend, the PA news agency understands. The 51-year-old is part of a three-person presenting line-up alongside Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan, who will work on rotation this season following the departure of former lead presenter Gary Lineker. Advertisement PA understands Chapman will be the first of the trio to host the flagship Saturday night show. Gabby Logan (left), Mark Chapman (centre) and Kelly Cates were confirmed as the three primary presenters of Match of the Day for next season in January (Andrew Milligan/Nigel French/Mike Egerton/PA) It is understood Cates will host a programme on Wednesday consisting of Uefa Super Cup highlights and a look-ahead to the new Premier League season, which begins on Friday night, while Logan will host Match Of The Day's Sunday night programme this week. The BBC announced on January 15 that Cates, Chapman and Logan would become the presenting team following weeks of speculation about who would take over from Lineker after he said last year that he was stepping down. The 64-year-old had long intended the final Match Of The Day of last season, on May 26, would be the last time he presented the highlights programme, but was planning to stay on to front the BBC's live coverage of the FA Cup and 2026 World Cup. Advertisement However, earlier in the month however he announced he was bringing forward his departure following a social media row in which he shared a post about Zionism featuring a depiction of a rat, historically used as an antisemitic trope. Lineker, the BBC's highest-paid presenter and Match Of The Day host since 1999, apologised unreservedly for the post but said it was 'best for all concerned' if he left completely. Gary Lineker left the BBC in May (PA) The Leicester-born former England football captain also runs Goalhanger Podcasts which produces podcasts such as The Rest Is Football, The Rest Is History, The Rest Is Politics, and The Rest Is Entertainment. Cates, 49, the daughter of former Liverpool forward and manager Sir Kenny Dalglish, has been a presenter with Sky Sports since rejoining the broadcaster in 2016, fronting coverage of the Premier League. She is also continuing her role with Sky Sports. Advertisement Chapman has been broadcasting for more than 25 years and has been a regular presenter of the BBC's Sunday night Match Of The Day programme. Former gymnast Logan became one of the first female sports anchors to break into terrestrial television and has covered several Olympic Games, the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games during her time at the BBC. The 52-year-old has presented Match Of The Day in Lineker's absence on many occasions, and was also a key part of the BBC's coverage of the Women's Euros in 2022 and last month. Match Of The Day will return on BBC One at 10.20pm on Saturday August 16. Advertisement
