Perth couple in heated custody battle over foster puppy

Police are being criticised over their response to a custody dispute, not over a child but over a puppy. The incident occurred when five officers arrived at a Yokine home of Friday morning to deal with an on-going dispute between a couple and a shelter. The custody battle is over Delta, an eight-month-old Kelpie who was put up for adoption by Swan Animal Haven. Pallas Retimana and her partner were fostering the young Kelpie on a trial basis, and had agreed to adopt her, but issues arose when they said they had plans to move inter-state. Swan Animal Haven allegedly said adoption was no longer an option. Jess Sackman from Swan Animal Haven told Seven News they contacted the couple, offering a proposal they found reasonable. 'We then contacted them on Thursday with a proposal to say, if you guys can meet these conditions, then we can consider going through with this adoption because it makes us feel more comfortable, they rejected that offer, which we felt left no alternative but to involve the police,' they said. In an online petition, Ms Retimana said they have offered 'every compromise imaginable' including delaying their move, but Swan Animal Haven refused. 'Swan Animal Haven has reported the dog stolen, which is not true. They handed the dog over to us willingly,' she told 7News.. The police made a surprise visit to the couples home on Friday morning to seize the puppy. Ms Retimana said the experience has been 'pretty emotional, pretty stressful, really distressing for the both of us'. 'I really just want Delta to stay with us and be apart of our family.' Premier Roger Cook has criticised the need for police involvement in the situation. 'Our police have got a lot of things to do. We don't want their resources being deployed to these sort of activities, which can be sorted out by the parties,' Mr Cook said.

State of Unreal 2025: The Witcher 4 previewed with Unreal Engine 5 graphics

Polish game developer CD Projekt RED has offered the first look at the gameplay of its upcoming title The Witcher 4 during the State of Unreal 2025 event. While the company clarified that the presentation wasn't actual gameplay footage, the technical demo provides a strong glimpse into the visual fidelity and systems the studio is building with Unreal Engine 5. On its official website, CD Projekt RED said: 'The Witcher 4 Unreal Engine 5 Tech Demo, presented at the State of Unreal 2025, dives into some of the innovative technology and features that will help bring the game's open world to life. Taking place in the never-before-seen region of Kovir, the tech demo is a first look at the cutting-edge technology powering The Witcher 4.' Captured on a PlayStation 5 running at 60 frames per second with ray tracing enabled, the demo showcases a 'standalone' demo built specifically to highlight the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5. For the uninitiated, Unreal Engine is a 3D creation tool developed by Epic Games that is primarily used for game development. Key highlights from The Witcher 4 demo: Seamless cinematic-to-gameplay transition The demo begins with a cinematic sequence showing a carriage being attacked by a winged creature. The action then shifts seamlessly to Ciri — confirmed as the main protagonist — as she investigates the scene in the new region of Kovir. The transition between cinematic and gameplay elements is smooth, offering a glimpse of the game's visual consistency and narrative immersion. CD Projekt RED also confirmed Kovir will be a playable region in The Witcher 4. Although the developer clarified that it's not actual gameplay footage, the seamless transition between cinematic and gameplay elements is still quite impressive. New Physics and realism The presentation demonstrated the enhanced power of Unreal Engine 5, particularly in environmental detail and character movement. One standout moment featured Ciri riding her horse Kelpie through the wilderness, with close attention paid to muscle flexing during each stride. The foliage and terrain were brought to life using Nanite Foliage — a feature in UE5 that enables developers to populate worlds with highly detailed, full-geometry grass, trees, and plants. The demo also showcased dynamic NPC (non-playable character) interactions. In one scene, Ciri bumps into a fruit vendor in a crowded market, spilling his crate of apples. A nearby NPC then rushes over to help pick them up. CD Projekt RED noted that such incidental reactions will be a part of the game world, increasing realism and immersion. Launch timeline Despite showing significant development progress, The Witcher 4 isn't expected to launch before 2026. In fact, a delay to 2027 remains likely. At a previous earnings call, CD Projekt RED CFO Piotr Nielubowicz stated: 'All we could share for now, to give more visibility to investors, is that the game will not be launched within the timeframe of the first target for the incentive programme, which ends 31st of December 2026.' Ciri taking on the role of protagonist was first confirmed in the game's reveal trailer during The Game Awards 2024, marking a new chapter in the franchise after the Geralt-led trilogy.

The Witcher 4 in Unreal Engine 5 looks stunning: Here are some takeaways from the tech demo

CD Projekt Red, the gaming studio that brought us The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, on Tuesday, June 3, showed a tech demo of The Witcher 4, an upcoming single-player, open-world RPG set in the same universe as its predecessor. In a blog post, CD Projekt Red said that the tech demo showcased how it is working with Epic Games' Unreal Engine to optimise and bring The Witcher 4 to the PC, PlayStation and Xbox. The tech demo, which takes place in the 'never-before-seen region of Kovir', follows Ciri, the main protagonist in The Witcher 4, along with her horse Kelpie, who travelling in the mountains and dense forests of Kovir to a new port town named Valdrest. In the video, CD Projekt Red and Epic Games also show Ciri talking to NPCs during a mission that involves killing a monster. The game developers also shed light on how they used Unreal Engine 5 features to power the game's open world and how the engine helps them 'drive performance, visual fidelity, and shape The Witcher 4's immersive open world.' CD Projekt Red, popularly known as CDPR, isn't unfamiliar with Unreal Engine. Back in 2022, the gaming studio announced that it would be working with Fortnite maker Epic Games to develop new tools and use Unreal Engine 5 features to expand its open world development capabilities. The Witcher 4 tech demo, which runs on the standard non-pro PlayStation 5 at 60 fps, showcases how game developers can use the latest Unreal Engine features like the new Unreal Animation Framework, Nanite Foliage rendering, MetaHuman technology with Mass AI crowd scaling, and others without significantly affecting the performance. However, in a statement to Video Game Chronicles, CD Projekt Red confirmed that what was shown in the demo wasn't The Witcher 4 gameplay, but just a tech demo that was set in the same universe as the game. Officially announced late last year, The Witcher 4 is one of the most famous games by the studio. And while CDPR hasn't shed much light on the game's story, we now know that the upcoming game will follow Ciri in her adventure in the northern region of the continent. Some of the highlights in The Witcher 4 tech demo's footage show a high-density foliage area created using the newest Unreal Engine 5 tools. The demo then takes us to a lively town where NPCs naturally talk to each other and do multiple actions simultaneously, like selling goods, doing everyday chores, and even throwing drinks out of a tavern. And while this isn't The Witcher 4 gameplay many were waiting for, it does give us an insight into how the game will look and feel. In a statement to The Verge, Julius Girbig, a senior technical animator at CDPR, said that they 'specifically wanted to go' with the standard PlayStation 5 to 'show how much we can optimize this engine together with Epic and make it work on current, gen instead of running it on some high-end hardware.' In the last year, several gaming studios, including some big games, have launched games using the Unreal Engine 5, but many of them have faced performance issues, with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 being the prime example of how buggy a game can get when not optimised properly. However, with CDPR showing off The Witcher 4 running at 60 fps without any problems on the PlayStation 5, we may finally see more mainstream gaming studios ditching their in-house developed engines and going with Unreal Engine 5.

The Witcher 4 Video Shows New Look at Ciri

During Epic's State of Unreal event, CD Projekt Red showed off some stunning footage of The Witcher 4, promising the most ambitious entry in the iconic series to date. CD Projekt Red came prepared with two videos for fans. The first was a brief cinematic showcasing a group of people being ambushed by a flying creature while in a wagon. Afterward, Ciri can be seen investigating the wreckage before things transition into another video. Following the cinematic of Ciri investigating the wagon's wreckage, things then cut to a 'technological showcase.' CD Projekt Red claims the video is running on a standard PlayStation 5 and outputting in 60 FPS with ray-tracing enabled. While some fans considered it a gameplay video, CDPR told VGC that the video was a separate tech demo set in the world of The Witcher 4 and not the game itself. In the video, Ciri rides into town on her horse, Kelpie, and we're treated to some stunning visuals and physics. After arriving in town, Ciri moves through a crowded market before CDPR's Sebastian Kalemba talks a bit about the game. He noted that the upcoming project is the 'most ambitious' and immersive open-world Witcher game ever. Currently, not a ton about The Witcher 4 is known. The game was revealed last year at The Game Awards, and CDPR has kept mostly quiet on things outside of their presentation today. Originally reported by Anthony Nash on Coming Soon.
