Local high school students learn valuable financial literacy skills
Local high school students are learning financial literacy with help from Tendto Credit Union.
Students of McDowell High School are participating in the Passport to Financial Independence program in partnership with Tendto Credit Union.
The program allows students to do different activities and earn rewards at different steps throughout the process.
One student, Kelsey Elliott, completed all steps of the program with one of those steps being creating an emergency fund.

Elliott said she saved around $150 for a time when she will need those funds.
'It's important because most students don't take the class. Most schools, they don't have these classes to teach young adults to save money properly. Without this class I don't think I would have been able to know what I was doing for college and the money,' said Elliott.
'It's definitely a mission of Tendto. It's also a mission of credit unions, in general, to give back, and our slogan is 'people helping people,' so we want to get that next generation financially smart and financially savvy,' said Wade Brink, CFO of Tendto Credit Union.
The class on Monday completed 150 items and their reward was a pizza party.
