Canterbury preview: Luke Price wants a soft option for Mogwai

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Co-trainer Luke Price feels Mogwai has found himself in the right race to kick off his latest campaign but hopes the track improves back into the soft range. Despite Mogwai having a heavy track win to his credit, Price believes a soft track is ideal for the former Godolphin gelding. 'While he has won on a heavy track once before, he is a horse whose best form is on Good 4 to Soft 6,' said Price, who trains in partnership with his father, Robert. The son of Epaulette made his way to the Price's Kembla base late last year when purchased on Inglis Digital for $75,000. He kicked off for his new trainers in the best possible fashion with an all-the-way win from Tartana and So Good So Cool at Kembla on December 28. He then stepped straight to Saturday city grade when a neck third behind Zondee at Rosehill on January 18 before two unplaced runs. 'He did a good job last campaign after a long time off,' Price said. 'He scored a nice win first-up albeit in a provincial race on his home track but he did carry a big weight. 'He went great at his next start in city grade when he ran third. 'I think he's a horse who likes to stride along. He doesn't like being held up which happened at his last run.' The four-year-old is leading contender in the Benchmark 72 Handicap (1250m) first-up provided the track improves. 'He is coming up really well, I like Tommy Berry on him and I don't mind the barrier. It gives him room to stride along where he is comfortable,' he said. 'If he lobs outside the leader, he can run a very cheeky race.' Price believes Canterbury is the ideal track for Invade And Conquer who likes to control things in front. Like Mogwai, Price said the track condition is all important to the gelding who was unplaced in both runs on heavy ground. 'He's honest but he just needs a Soft 5 track at worst,' he said. 'I'm not sure if he will go around this week. We will just see how the track comes up on race morning.' The four-year-old was a dominant winner on his home track back on March 22 before a wide run when eighth at Hawkesbury followed by a fourth at Kembla. He led and give a good kick on straightening at Kembla last start before being caught on the post by Hyperbolic. From barrier 3, he would be a good chance in the Benchmark 72 (1550m) with Rachel King aboard. 'He was brave the other day. He just didn't see the horse come down the outside,' said Price. 'He's drawn well and has a good jockey on in Rachel who rates them very well in front.' The Price's other runner for the day is Miss Hvar in the Benchmark 72 (1550m) for fillies and mares. The daughter of Ocean Park debuted with a strong closing run from well back to grab Kuwait on the line at Kembla on April 19 before jumping up to a Benchmark 68 when fourth to Hyperbolic on May 10. 'I thought she ran really well the other day in a slowly run race that was dominated by the on speed horses,' Price said. 'She had to make a sustained run from near last and the track was starting to get a doughy for her. 'She has a good rider on in Tyler Schiller, has no weight and will go back any way so the barrier is not a huge concern. 'Like the other two, I just hope the track dries up a bit.' ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Connections of Gunroom are banking on three key factors in the gelding's bid to break through for his first win. After leading at Warwick Farm last start, Gunroom looked home before being caught late be the flying Hopper. The son of Snitzel, who hails from the family of eight-time Group 1 winner Apache Cat, will give his rivals something to catch in the Broadsiding @ Darley Handicap (1250m). 'I thought he had the race won last start hence why we have opted to claim this week and the blinkers go on,' said Ben Vassallo, racing manager for B K Racing and Breeding. 'Also, getting him around a tighter circumference track that is rain affected as well as two kilo claim with Braith Nock. 'I think those factors can have him in a good position to break his maiden this week.' The Joe Pride-trained three-year-old was actually first past the post on debut at Hawkesbury last October before losing the race on protest to Lady Zodiac followed by a third at Wyong. This campaign, Gunroom resumed with a sixth at Hawkesbury before second placings to Maori Chief and Hopper in Super Maidens at Kensington and Warwick Farm taking his overall record to four placings from six starts. 'He hasn't been disappointing. It's just been frustrating to be so close to be honest,' Vassallo said. 'The jockey was soft on him late. It probably would have helped us in the (stewards) room if he pushed him out. 'Since then, he has had some good runs but some frustrating seconds. 'His pedigree says he will be better over further but we just want to win that maiden and then we can look to step him up in trip next preparation to 1400m or a mile.' B K Racing and Breeding also have Long Legs making her debut in the Ranvet Handicap (1100m) for two-year-old fillies. The Gary Portelli-trained daughter of Russian Revolution have been very good in both barrier trials on wet ground with Andrew Calder aboard who sticks with her. 'She is a beautiful filly. She is probably more of a three-year-old type than a two-year-old but we are late in the season now,' Vassallo said. 'She has thrived off everything we have asked of her. 'She has had a couple of weeks to prepare for this off that second trial. 'I expect her to run right up to her trials especially with the sting out of the ground.'

Goulburn preview: Dynamic Syndications' Adam Watt is justifiably upbeat about the chances of their four runners

A little bit of bad luck cost Tact from running a place in the MTC Guineas and a drop back in grade has the gelding is perfectly placed to atone. Tact followed a handy first-up fourth at Newcastle with a narrow maiden win at Kembla before heading to Wagga last start where he finished a length-and-a-half fifth behind talented filly Dupli Kate in the three-year-old feature. 'His run was really good in the Wagga Guineas, said Dynamic Syndications' Adam Watt. 'He was slow away and just had to do a little too much work to get up outside the leader. They went very quick through the early and middle part of the race. 'He got a touch of interference late in the piece as well which wasn't ideal. 'He was good on the line and coming again.' The Richard and Will Freedman -trained three-year-old can bounce back when he lines up in the Midway Class 1 Handicap (1600m). Tact leads all the way and holds on to salute in the first at Kembla! 🙌 @R1CHARDFREEDMAN @willfreedman @KPMcEvoy â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) April 15, 2025 The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'We feel he has trained on nicely and I expect him to go to Goulburn and be very hard to beat,' Watt said. 'I'd be disappointed if he wasn't fighting out the finish.' Watt admitted they may have made a mistake running Ready To Rocket first-up at Kembla on April 15 when she just peaked on her run in the straight. She followed with a solid third behind all-the-way winner Let's Go Again in a Benchmark 64 on a Heavy 8 there second-up. 'She was brilliant on debut winning in good style and good time,' said Watt. 'We probably got a touch greedy first-up and went to the races too quick after two very good trials. 'She was probably still a gallop short and we probably should have waited another week or so. 'She ran well but just a bit short of where she needed to be. 'I thought she was terrific at Kembla the other day. Anna (Roper) rode her well and she hit the line full of gusto.' She is now at her peak for the Class 1 Handicap where she drops back to 1000m where she has drawn barrier 1 with Zac Lloyd to ride the Ciaron Maher -trained mare. 'Coming back to Class 1 grade will really suit her on a big, open track like Goulburn,' he said. 'From a good draw third-up, I expect to see her posy up closer and I'm not surprised early market support for her. The opener at Canterbury goes to Sounds Unusual, and it's a wining start to 2025 for @cwallerracing and @nashhot! @aus_turf_club â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) January 1, 2025 'I feel she is well weighted as a four-year-old mare only carrying 57 kilos when a couple of three-year-olds have to give her weight off Wyong and Canberra Maiden wins.' In the same race, Dynamic are represented by the Jason Deamer -trained Sagaponack. The three-year-old took improvement from her first-up fourth at Taree and broke through for her maiden win with a handy performance at Port Macquarie second-up. 'We took her to Port Macquarie to get a win on the board. We thought it was important for her resume,' he said. 'Now that she has, she can well and truly to provincial level and make her presence felt. 'I think she is well and truly over the odds.' Their final runner for the day is the aptly-named The Beast in the Maiden Handicap (1600m). The Ciaron Maher-trained gelding has taken good improvement from his first-up third to Meille De Lune over 1500m at Newcastle and is suited over the mile. 'I can't believe he is the price he is,' he said 'He got through the heavy ground well enough first-up over 1500m which is no easy thing to do. He will appreciate going up 100m in trip. 'From a formline point of view, he would be a maiden for too much longer and I can certainly see him breaking through this week.' â– â– â– â– â– Randwick trainer Michael Freedman is keeping a close eye on the weather forecasts for the Southern Tablelands before making a final decision if Twinkling Star and Gorbachev make the trip to Goulburn. Freedman certainly doesn't want heavy ground for the pair and admitted they were 50/50 of making the trip south. 'Both my horses need a reasonably dry track and I wouldn't send them if it was going to be much worse than that,' said Michael Freedman. Twinkling Star was returning from a let-up at Wyong on May 8 and showed a distinct dislike for the wet ground. After racing behind the leader, the daughter of Zoustar failed to run on in the straight and finish an eight length sixth behind Celtic Sin and Satin Sparkle. Fast Track (So You Think x Light Express) gets the job done on debut at @kemblaraces! ðŸ†ðŸ‡ In a thrilling finish, she held on to secure the win, with a perfectly timed ride by @TommyBerry21 🎯ðŸ' Congratulations to her owners on this exciting victory! â€' O'Shea & Charlton Racing (@JohnOSheaRacing) March 4, 2025 'That was a bit of joke because it was clearly worse than a Soft 6 when the race was run but because they didn't down grade the track before the first, I couldn't scratch her and she had to run. 'It was a bit of a waste of time.' Before her break, Twinkling Star battled away when a head second to Fast Track at Kembla before a third to Super Nui at Kembla. 'She's got decent enough ability to say she should be able to knock off a maiden,' he said. 'It's just a matter of trying to find a surface to suit which isn't easy at this time of year.' Stablemate Gorbachev kicked off his preparation with a fighting nose win from Alpine Ski after coming from last in the field of five at Gosford on March 15. He then stepped up to a Benchmark 64 at Wyong a month later where he battled away for a length sixth to Puerto Banus. 'I think the track that day was pretty soft under foot which he wasn't entirely happy on. 'He is another one we have trying to dodge the wet tracks and find a dry surface for him.' Aside from the prospective wet weather, Gorbachev looks very well placed in the Class 1 Handicap (1300m). 'It's a shame about the weather because this certainly does look a nice race for him,' he said. 'I think the 1300 metre Class 1 suits him well. At that level, with the right on the right surface, he would a decent chance.'

Placed four of eight including three of her last four. Was beaten a neck here first-up and just caught late last start. FIREPOP (8) is a first starter by Shalaa from a half-sister to Ortensia. Jumped well and lead all-the-way to beat My Shareena in her Apr 29 Warwick Farm trial on a heavy track. Her stablemate CITY GOLD FIELD (1) is also on debut. By Deep Field, he is from a half-sister to Group 3 Ducasse. Has been good in finishing second in both trials. KING'S SECRET (2), who races in the same colours as his half-brother Private Eye, debuted with placings behind Benzou and Shangri La Spring. He resumed with a nice win from Justice Warrior over 1100m on a Soft track at Gosford. INOUE (1) placed at his first two starts in the spring. Also kicked off this campaign with a win at Gosford when he beat Poiema in a 1000m Super Maiden on a soft track. RUNRANIRUN (6) resumed with a safely held second to Flame Of Hestia at Newcastle. Didn't handle the firm track at Albury last start. BOHEMIAN ART (8) was backed from $4.40 into $2.60 on debut after some nice trials. Sat outside Impressionism and fought on well to finish long head second at Newcastle on Apr 26. Will take plenty of improvement from the run. MONTE VEEBEE (4) has been runner-up in five of his eight starts including both runs this campaign. Went down as a short-priced favourite at Albury last start. Blinkers off and winkers go on. RACE 5: Aib/ara Building Services Mdn Hcp 1200m MAID OF MOOLAH (4) debuted with a handy neck second to Nymphadora in an 1100m Hawkesbury Super Maiden on April 5. RACE 6: Civona Skincare (Bm64) 1200m LYLES (5) drove through from gate one to track the leader and boxed on well for third to Media World when resuming at Warwick Farm. Nice win in her recent Rosehill trial. MERCANTILIST (9) was very good winning at Gosford on debut. Drawn the outside so may wait for another day but a huge chance if she starts. HYPERBOLIC (6) hard to beat but likely goes to Gosford. INVADE AND CONQUER (3) took control in front and raced away to a near four length win from Cashburn over this track and distance three starts back. Raced keenly when caught wide at Hawkesbury then outside the leader when fourth to Sizzler last start. Gets a 3kg claim and can bounce back. PRESIDES (2) kicked back to win at Newcastle before a second to Sizzler and a third to Flying Embers here. MISS HVAR (8) made a late start to her career but it was worth the wait with a strong closing win from Kuwait over 1300m here. ELIVINA (9) debuted with a nice third to Tact here on Apr 15 before a tough win from Covert Thinking in a 1500m Newcastle Super Maiden. Up to the mile and bred to get further.
