Jailed: Speeding driver who lied to avoid points
A driver has been jailed after paying someone else to take the penalty points for their speeding offence. In 2023, a Volkswagen Touran was caught speeding on the A14 in Barham, Suffolk. Police sent a letter to the car's registered owner asking him to provide details of who was driving. At the wheel was Georgia Miller, 27, of Lynn Road in Hillington, Norfolk. She was given an eight month sentence for perverting the course of justice after texts emerged where she said she would "pay someone" to say they had been driving instead. Investigating officer PC Sharon Hackett said perverting the course of justice was an "incredibly serious crime". "In an attempt to avoid a fine and points on her licence, which would not have stopped her from driving, Miller has instead suffered a much more severe consequence," added PC Hackett, from Norfolk and Suffolk's joint road policing unit. The court heard the registered owner of the VW Touran was Steve Kendle, 41, of Blackfriars Road, King's Lynn. Texts between him and Miller showed them discussing the speeding offence. In one text Miller, who was sentenced at King's Lynn Crown Court on 21 February, said: "I'll have to pay someone to say it was them, I can't say it was me, I will get points, I've already done speed awareness." The messages were uncovered by Norfolk Police when it reviewing Kendle's phone as part of an unrelated investigation. In October 2023, Miller filled out an online form stating the driver was a man called Barry Pegg, 69, of Highgate, King's Lynn. Both Kendle and Pegg were also convicted of perverting the course of justice. Kendle was sentenced to eight months in prison. Pegg was given a four month sentence, suspended for nine months. Miller was sentenced to a further 27 months for the fraudulent evasion of duty. Kendle received a further eight months for the same offence.
