Sock-stealing K9 helps nab suspect in Kent

You can run – but you can't hide from the Kent Police Department. Especially is K9 Gambit is involved. Last week, officers arrested a man accused of speeding away from law enforcement, crashing into a fire hydrant, and sending a K9 on a 40-minute chase through the woods. It all started in the East Hill neighborhood around 12:15 a.m. An officer on routine patrol spotted a Honda in front of him with no license plates. When he turned on his lights to pull the driver over, the officer says the 23-year-old sped up and turned his lights off. The officer called for backup, and one of the incoming patrol cars spotted the Honda on the side of the road near Summit Avenue. 'Turns out the suspect compounded his already long list of bad decisions, and tried to negotiate a turn, in the dark with no headlights,' a post from the department reads. According to officers, the driver wound up hitting a parked car and fire hydrant. Police found the passenger pretty quickly – they say he was hiding in a nearby bush. The driver, though, didn't give up so easily. Police say after about 40 minutes, K9 Gambit leapt into the bushes and came out with a single sock. Officers gave the man commands to come out, and say he eventually did – wearing no shoes and the other sock. The man was taken to a nearby hospital to ensure he was okay before he was booked into jail. 'It's just not in our officers' DNA to give up on a call,' The department said online. 'If you commit crimes here in Kent, and victimize our residents, we are going to find you.'

Police warning of robbery trend targeting members of Asian community

The Kent Police Department is warning residents of a series of robberies, particularly targeting members of the Asian community. According to police, most of the incidents happened outside of Kent, but they were still close enough to have the department put folks on alert. During the crimes, the suspects have approached victims in a seemingly friendly manner. They often engage in small talk, ask for directions, or offer gifts such as money or jewelry, Kent PD said. According to police, in some cases, suspects have asked to pray with the victim, during which they may place fake jewelry or a towel around the victim's neck. 'They discreetly and forcibly remove the victim's real jewelry, sometimes without the victim noticing until later. In more serious cases, suspects have threatened or used violence, including the display of knives,' Kent PD wrote. The suspects are described as both a man and a woman, often appearing to be of Middle Eastern descent and estimated to be between 20 and 30 years old. Kent Police say these incidents have been reported at the Great Wall Shopping Mall and the Hong Kong Market in Burien. What You Can Do to Stay Safe: Be aware of your surroundings at all times Shop with a friend or family member, especially in locations where incidents have occurred Avoid wearing visible or expensive jewelry in public, particularly in the areas mentioned above. Report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement immediately. If you have any information about these incidents, contact the Kent Police Department KPDTipLine@ OR call our tip line @ 253-856-5808. If you have been a victim of this crime in the past and have not made a report, call 911 OR the non-emergency police dispatch line 253-852-2121.

Tipton, Wallach pull ahead in early Kent primary voting

Candidates for Kent City Council at-large seats are, top row from left, Ben Tipton, Derek Salustro and Tracy Wallach; and, bottom row from left, Michael Thrasher and Sarah Wesley. Three Democrats rose to the top in the primary May 6, moving on to a November contest for Kent City Council at-large seats that is even more crowded. In early voting, former Kent City Councilwoman Tracy Wallach and Benjamin Tipton were ahead, with 318 votes for Wallach and 390 for Tipton. The three other Democratic contenders, Derek Salustro, Michael Thrasher and Sarah Elizabeth Wesley, were in close competition for the third seat, with 229 votes for Salustro, 216 for Wesley, and 127 for Thrasher. The three top Democrats are set to face Republican Cecil Anderson and two independents, John Kuhar and Eric Dreger, in the fall. Kuhar served Ward 4 for 17 years until 2023, when he lost the seat to Democrat Chris Hook. At that time, Kuhar ran as a Republican. Dreger, a retired police officer, resigned from the sheriff's department in 2023, and also was a sergeant at the Kent Police Department before joining the sheriff's department. Kent's three at-large council members − Democrats Michael DeLeone, Gwen Rosenberg and Roger Sidoti − are not seeking reelection. Councilman Jack Amrhein, a Democrat who serves Ward 2, is running unopposed for Kent mayor. The current mayor, Jerry Fiala, an independent, did not file petitions seeking reelection. The incident involved a stolen Hyundai Elantra, with the driver evading police and nearly causing a collision before being apprehended when the car's tire began to smoke. KENT, Wash. - A teenage boy was arrested, and two pre-teen girls released to family members, after taking a stolen vehicle for a joyride in Kent on Thursday night. According to the Kent Police Department, an officer was patrolling East Hill around 9:30 p.m. when he was alerted to a black Hyundai Elantra reported stolen from Auburn. The officer spotted the car heading down 116th Ave SE, so he turned on his lights and flagged the car to pull over. Instead, the driver sped off and "drove randomly around" the neighborhood for several minutes, police say. Authorities say at one point, the driver nearly struck another officer's car head-on, then drove away. After a time, the driver-side front tire started to smoke, and the car pulled over. Police stopped the driver, who they say was a 14-year-old boy, and he asked them why they kept pursuing him after he drove away. Two 12-year-old girls were in the car during his arrest, one from Kent and one from Auburn. Both were released to their family members. WATCH: King County Sheriff's helicopter tracks reckless driver during multi-city chase

You can run, but you can't hide from the Kent Police Department when there are eyes in the sky. On March 25, an officer says they tried to stop an unlicensed BMW that was driving recklessly. The driver tried to get away, but the King County Sheriff's Office says its Guardian 1 helicopter was nearby and joined in the chase. The department says patrol officers were able to back off on the ground while the helicopter provided updates on where the BMW was headed. Video from the helicopter shows the driver weave in and out of traffic, cut through several parking lots and neighborhoods, and speed through several cities. Eventually, officers caught up with the BMW and blocked the driver in. Video shows the man jump out of the car and try to make a run for it, but he gave up fairly quickly and was arrested.
