Paul Mescal dons monochrome look for Cannes film premiere

Paul Mescal made a glamorous appearance at the 78th Cannes Film Festival last night, where he attended the premiere of his newest film, The History of Sound. Established in 1946, and running this year from Tue, May 13, 2025 – Sat, May 24, 2025, the festival has been one of the most watched events in the celebrity and fashion calendar, with some of fashion history's most memorable looks appearing on the steps of the Palais des Festivals. Mescal had landed in the chic French city days before his event, attending the Kering Women in Motion gala alongside Charli XCX, Nicole Kidman, Salma Hayek and more. Styled by Felicity Kay, his ensemble was typically eye-catching: a Gucci suit with a pale cream shirt accented with a gold hoop. The look certainly set the tone for what the Aftersun star would wear for his premiere. Also styled by Kay, Mescal stepped out in a monochromatic black outfit by Gucci, pairing a sharply tailored black blazer with flared black trousers and a matching black shirt that had a loose, retro-inspired tie detail. He finished his look with black dress shoes and a gold earring. Also walking the red carpet for the premiere was singer Gracie Abrams, who is believed to be dating Mescal, and who wore an elegant black midi-length dress by Chanel, with beaded straps and a matching shawl. Supermodel Coco Rocha turned heads in her red carpet look, wearing a design by Inout Ravzan that was made to resemble multiple shirt collars. She paired that with towering hair and statement earrings.

Taraji P. Henson Talks New Ventures After Hollywood Treatment

Back in 2023, Taraji P. Henson memorably broke down in tears as she opened up about constantly fighting for equal pay in Hollywood. 'I'm just tired of working so hard, being gracious at what I do, [and] getting paid a fraction of the cost,' she said as she opened up about her treatment in Hollywood as a Black woman. 'I'm tired of hearing my sisters say the same thing over and over. You get tired.' Fast forward to today, and Taraji has opened up about the subject again during a recent talk at the Kering Women in Motion event at Cannes. After revealing that she recently took a month off of acting and relocated to Bali, Taraji recalled feeling 'discouraged' by her treatment in Hollywood. 'I was just frustrated and it was making me bitter, and I'm not a bitter person,' she said, per Variety. 'I made a promise to myself that if I ever got there, it's time to walk away. I'm not serving myself or the audience or the characters I play. Thank God I did that. I came back refreshed and with a new perspective.' Taraji went on to note that she'd spent years being 'graceful in getting paid less than.' 'Not anymore though!' she said, adding that when she returned from Bali, she focused on non-acting ventures — like her hair care brand, TPH — instead of 'relying on that check from Hollywood.' Good for you, Taraji! You can catch her in the upcoming Netflix drama film Straw, which comes out on June 6.

Nicole Kidman laments ‘incredibly low' number of women-directed films

AFP | Los Angeles Australian megastar Nicole Kidman expressed disappointment Sunday over the 'incredibly low' number of successful films directed by women, despite ongoing efforts to support and mentor female-led projects. Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival as she received the Kering Women in Motion award, Kidman highlighted the persistent gender gap in the film industry. "The number of women-made films among the highest-grossing is incredibly low," she said. In 2017, Kidman pledged to work with at least one female director every 18 months, citing a lack of choice at the time. 'You would go, 'OK, could a woman direct this?' There just wasn't a number of names that you could consider,' she noted. Since then, the Oscar-winning actress has collaborated with 27 female directors—far exceeding her original pledge, averaging one every 3.5 months. Of the 22 films competing in Cannes' main competition this year, only seven are directed by women. Kidman also praised Mascha Schilinski's 'The Sound of Falling,' a German-language drama exploring intergenerational trauma among women on a farm. The film has emerged as an early critics' favourite. 'To have Sound of Falling heard on the world stage—that's fantastic,' she said. While Kidman ruled out writing a full script herself, she revealed that she often wakes up at 3:00 a.m. to write personal reflections. 'It's a very ripe time for things to happen because you're in that slightly removed state from reality,' she explained. 'I wake up and I'll write something—be it a dream, or something circulating in my mind.'
