The Sports Report: New Dodgers acquisition falters in loss
From Kevin Baxter: Brock Stewart slumped in front of a mostly empty locker in the middle of the Dodgers clubhouse Monday afternoon, a stall that used to belong to pitcher Dustin May, as clubhouse attendants rushed over with boxes of brand new size 13 cleats. A week ago Stewart was pitching for the Minnesota Twins, who wear red cleats. The Dodgers don't, so Stewart needed a makeover. 'I got blue gloves coming too,' he said. Getting dressed properly isn't the only thing players have to worry about when they change teams in the middle of the season. Stewart had a home and family in Minnesota to pack up and move when he learned Thursday that he had been traded from a team with a losing record to one chasing a second straight World Series title. By late Monday evening, Stewart found himself in the middle of that pennant race when he took the mound in the ninth inning of a tie game. It didn't end well, with Stewart (2-2) surrendering a run on three hits while getting just two outs in a 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. It was a rude homecoming for the right-hander, who was drafted by the Dodgers in 2014 but waived five years later after pitching 36 times over parts of four seasons. After he remade himself during a six-year sojourn in which dropped down to independent ball, Stewart was brought back to Los Angeles to stabilize an overworked, injury-plagued bullpen that has struggled. In his first appearance at Dodger Stadium in the home uniform since 2019, he added to those struggles, giving up hits to the first two batters he faced, then falling behind 2-0 to pinch-hitter Yohel Pozo, who flared a single over the infield to drive in the go-ahead run. Perryman was arrested after deputies allegedly discovered five firearms — including two assault-style weapons — in his vehicle during a traffic stop Friday night, the agency said in a statement. He was released from jail Monday afternoon and his arrest will be listed as a detention on his record. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh publicly addressed the situation Monday, saying he visited with the veteran linebacker in jail over the weekend. 'He's working through the legalities along with his representation,' said Harbaugh before Perryman's release from jail. The Sports Report: Dodgers are swept by the Astros
From Kevin Baxter: When the Dodgers left Los Angeles for their final road trip before the All-Star break last summer, they had a 55-36 record and a 7 1/2-game lead in the National League West. That team went on to win the World Series. When this year's Dodgers land in Milwaukee on Sunday night to begin the last road trip before the All-Star break, their record will be a game better and their division lead about the same, pending the results of San Diego's game Sunday night. But if you take a good look under the hood, there are obvious — and worrying — differences between this year and last year. In 2024, the Dodgers had one of the best records in baseball against teams with a winning record. After Sunday's 5-1 loss to the Houston Astros, this year's team is just a game over .500 — 20-19 — against teams over .500. Those are the only kind of teams the Dodgers will face in the playoffs. And it's not just that they lose, it's how they lose that's troubling. His legacy transcends generations on the microphone. González's career began almost accidentally. Although his dream was to play soccer, life had other plans for him and turned him into a storyteller. 'One day on March 6, 1962, I was playing soccer in the local league and the radio play-by-play broadcaster who was assigned that game of my team Escuintla against Universidad, Dr. Otorrino Ríos Paredes, had a car accident,' González recalled in 2017. 'The owner of the station ran to tell me, '[get dressed, get dressed]' and I replied, 'Who are you to tell me to get dressed? Let the trainer tell me.' Six Boston players homered, including three straight by David Ortiz, Josh Reddick and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. 2011 — A Texas Rangers fan died after falling about 20 feet onto concrete reaching out for a baseball tossed his way by All-Star outfielder Josh Hamilton during a game. Shannon Stone, 39, was at the game with his young son, who watched as his dad tumbled over the outfield railing after catching the ball. The accident happened in the second inning after Oakland's Conor Jackson hit a foul ball. The Sports Report: Pitching woes haunt the Dodgers again
From Kevin Baxter: The Dodgers made history when they opened the season with eight straight wins, something no reigning World Series champion had ever done. But they've been just a shade above mediocre since then. 'I wouldn't say [I'm] worried. It's kind of where we're at right now,' manager Dave Roberts said. 'It's been hard to gain traction.' If anything, the Dodgers have been spinning their wheels. Because with Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the New York Mets, the team's third loss in four games, the Dodgers fell to .500 over the last month and their lead in the National League West remained at just a game over the San Diego Padres heading into Thursday's get-away day matinee with the Mets. Since their historic start, the Dodgers have had just three winning streaks of more than two games, but three losing streaks of more than two games. For every three steps forward, the team has taken 2 ½ steps back. And while the Dodgers entered Thursday with the fourth-best record in the league, over the last two months they have a lower winning percentage than the Milwaukee Brewers, the third-best team in the Central Division. BOSSIER CITY, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — The fourth Salute to Community Heroes event recognized 17 finalists and named seven community heroes for their daily efforts to improve the community's lives. The Bossier Chamber of Commerce (BCC) nominees come from the sectors of education, healthcare, non-profit, military, and law enforcement. Captain Allen has served in the United States Military for 28 years, and as a Training Officer and Training Station Captain. 'Mark was diagnosed with cancer and is unable to return to the job that he loves. Still, despite this hardship, his unwavering character and determination continue to inspire everyone who meets him.' John Atkins – Atco Investment Co.: Atkins is a partner at Atco Investment Company, Louisiana Timber Partners, and is a civic leader for Air Force Global Strike Command. He also serves as the District 9 Commissioner for Caddo Parish. Dr. Kevin Baxter – Louisiana State University Shreveport: 'Dr. Kevin Baxter is a department Chair and program Director at LSUS for their only doctorate program, focused on developing leaders. Dr. Baxter served for 20 years in the Louisiana Army National Guard, and he worked as a law enforcement officer for Bossier City PD and as a trooper for the Louisiana State Police.' One day, her daughter asked if Tiffany would be willing to help develop a partnership with Willis Knighton to expand the Medical Detectives program. Tiffany agreed and worked alongside the ER leadership team to secure funding, equipment, and coordinate a hands-on field trip so that the students at North Desoto could learn about healthcare from medical professionals at their place of work. Tiffany stepped up for her daughter and helped to create a program that has taught dozens of middle school students about the medical world.'
