Kevin Thomson opens up on Rangers coaching future as he insists ball is in new Ibrox regime's court

Thomson returned to Gers academy coaching set-up earlier this year Kevin Thomson admits he doesn't know if he will continue his role in the coaching set-up at Rangers next season. The former midfielder returned to the club back in January to work alongside U18s boss Steven Smith at Ibrox back in January after initially leaving Gers to become manager of Kelty Hearts back in 2021. ‌ Despite leading the Fife side to the League Two title in his first season, Thomson opted to step away from the job, turning his focus to media commitments. ‌ Thomson had been linked with a position on former teammate Barry Ferguson' s coaching team when the ex Light Blues captain replaced the sacked Philippe Clement back in February, but was omitted in favour of Neil McCann, Allan McGregor and Billy Dodds. New boss Russell Martin has been joined at Ibrox by one-time Rangers goalkeeper Matt Gilks and performance analyst Rhys Owen, who both worked with him at previous club Southampton. And with Thomson current contract with Rangers set to expire on June 30 - he says he is yet to learn if he will remain a part of the new owners 49ers Enterpises plans going forward. Speaking on BBC Sportsound. he said: "Obviously in that time there's been a takeover, a new manager. "My contract finished on June 30. As of yet I've not really had much dialogue with the club. "I'm just waiting to see what's what. ‌ "Moving forward, if there's an opportunity there then brilliant. "If there's not, then you know what I'm like, I just bash on and keep grafting away." He returned the the under-18s earlier this year in a shake up of the development phase at the club. But with the club going through a period of massive change, Thomson still isn't sure what the immediate future holds. Speaking on BBC Sportsound, he said: "I went back in the second week in February. We finished up the third in May. "Obviously in that time there's been a takeover, a new manager. "My contract's finished on June 30. As of yet I've not really had much dialogue with the club. "I'm just waiting to see what's what. Moving forward, if there's an opportunity there then brilliant. "If there's not, then you know what I'm like, I just bash on and keep grafting away." The San Francisco 49ers Enterprises buyout was confirmed a little under a month ago, with new gaffer Russell Martin unveiled the following week. Matt Gill came in as assistant while Issame Charai - who stuck around as coach after Philippe Clement was sacked - departed. Russell Martin's to-do list in first week as Rangers boss PLUS Lawrence Shankland and Greg Taylor latest Chief executive Patrick Stewart said: 'I want to place on record the sincere thanks of both the club and I to Issame for his work over the past six months. 'Through the managerial transition in February and beyond, he handled himself superbly and was a real asset to Barry and his staff during their period in charge of the team. 'As the men's first-team moves forth into this new era under Russell, it has been agreed between the club and Issame for him to move on. 'For whatever comes next for him, I want to wish him the very best of luck. He will always be welcome back at Ibrox.' Barry Ferguson's interim team leaned heavily on former players who knew the club - Allan McGregor, Billy Dodds and Neil McCann. With the new manager's coaching staff lacking numbers thus far and Thomson awaiting discussions, he could continue on with the youngsters or find himself in the dugout alongside Martin... or of course end up elsewhere. Bassey made 65 appearances for Rangers before joining Ajax in the summer of 2022 in a deal worth around £20million. The 25-year-old had a season at the Eredivisie club before switching to Premier League side Fulham, where he has become a regular starter under Marco Silva. Glen Kamara played nearly 200 times for Rangers and then signed for Leeds United, but departed Elland Road after a season as the club missed out on promotion to the Premier League. He joined French club Rennes last summer in a multi-million pound deal, but six months later was told he was surplus to requirements. The 29-year-old was sent out to Al-Shabab on loan and made 13 appearances for the Saudi Arabian side, who now have an option to buy him permanently. 4 Calvin Bassey and Glen Kamara pose with Kevin Thomson's sons Credit: Kevin Thomson on X It is highly unlikely the Nigeria and Finland internationals would return to Ibrox anytime soon, but it has not stopped fans asking the question.
