Mamata Banerjee launches ‘Sramashree' scheme to support and rehabilitate returning migrant workers in Bengal

(ANI Photo) Kolkata: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced a rehabilitation scheme for migrant labourers who were allegedly harassed and tortured in BJP-ruled at the state secretariat Nabanna, she said: 'We have formulated a new rehabilitation plan for migrant workers called 'Sramashree'. Through 'Sramasree', migrant labourers, who have enrolled in the portal, would be provided financial aid of Rs 5,000 for 12 months or till the time they get fresh employment in Bengal. The cabinet has given approval for the scheme to help in the rehabilitation of the migrant workers willing to return,' she said.'This new plan is focused on helping migrant workers return and become economically reliant. Those who return will be provided Rs 5,000 along with one-time travel aid. Until new work can be arranged for them, an aid of Rs 5,000 per month will be given. The Labour Department will be the nodal department for this,' she said. 'During Covid, we had supported the migrant labourers through various schemes.''Migrant workers from Bengal, who are working outside and those who are enrolled in the migrant workers portal (Karmasathi), will get the aid,' she said. Those who are returning can get in touch with the Migrant Workers Welfare Board or through 'Karmasathi', she said.'In addition to financial aid, migrant workers will get 'Khadya Sathi' cards. The administration has been instructed to provide this and the chief secretary will monitor the process. 'Swasthya Sathi' cards will also be provided. If they do not have a house, a community kitchen centre will be set up. Arrangements will be made for their children to enrol in local government schools to ensure their education continues without interruption. The migrant workers will also be enrolled in other schemes of the state government as well,' Banerjee said. 'The primary aim of this initiative is to bring back our migrant workers and help them get a livelihood and make them financially independent. We have 'Utkarsha Bangla' scheme too, where we give skilled training. Those who return will be assessed to identify the skills they possess, and training will be given wherever required,' Banerjee claimed that around 22 lakh migrant labourers and their families have been working outside Bengal. 'In states with double-engine governments, there is attack on Bengali speaking people,' she said.'These workers, if they return, will be provided work under the Karmashree scheme and given job-cards. We have given work to 78 lakh job-card holders under this scheme and over 91 crore man-days have been created. The state has spent Rs 19,000 crore for this scheme,' Banerjee stated.

Bengali migrant workers to receive monthly aid of Rs 5000 on return to state: WB CM Mamata
KOLKATA: Migrant workers from West Bengal will get financial assistance on their return to the state, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Monday. After a cabinet meeting at Nabanna, the state administrative headquarters, Banerjee said that migrant workers on their return to West Bengal from other states would get monthly financial assistance of Rs 5,000 for next 12 months in addition of getting social benefits like 'Khadya Sathi' and 'Swasthya Sathi', while announcing a new scheme 'Sramasree' to roll out these facilities. The Chief Minister said, 'The project is only for migrant workers from Bengal. Those who return to the state will get a one-time payment of Rs. 5,000 along with travel assistance. This is a rehabilitation allowance. Financial assistance of Rs 5,000 per month will also be provided for one year, until new work arrangements are made for them.'

Mamata gives point-by-point rebuttal to BJP's ‘vicious propaganda' on Alipurduar
Kolkata: CM Mamata Banerjee on Friday gave a point-by-point rebuttal to BJP's claims over "non-development of north Bengal, particularly Alipurduar" just hours after PM Narendra Modi's speech there. In a long post on her X account, Banerjee claimed the campaign was a "vicious and false" propaganda against the state. "Yesterday, a vicious and false campaign was there at Alipurduar in north Bengal from a self-serving and politically motivated point of view for narrow power gains. This was a campaign that attempted to downplay and erase the significant development works of our govt for the people in Alipurduar district. The blatant untruths were served from the high quarters of the Hon'ble Prime Minister. Therefore, I want to share some facts and data relating to our actual impactful initiatives for the people of Alipurduar," she wrote. "We always try to do our best for the people of Bengal, that is why they are with us. We do not divide people on basis of religion, race, caste or narrow-mindedness. "To enhance administrative accessibility, we established Alipurduar district as Bengal's 20th district in June 2014. Since its formation, the district experienced substantial developmental progress across various sectors, ensuring that every resident benefited from at least one state govt scheme," she posted. "We made significant strides in infrastructure, starting with the model integrated administrative building, 'Dooars Kanya'," wrote Banerjee, adding how a multi-speciality hospital at Falakata, the Alipurduar University, an AYUSH college, a nursing school and multiple SNSUs, blood banks, wellness centres, govt colleges, schools and student hostels have been added to the district's health and education infrastructure. The CM also listed a number of public amenities that were created in Alipurduar, including kishan mandis, Sufal Bangla stalls, electric substations, a new Falakata supermarket, a new stadium, a women's police station and Bangla Sahayata Kendras (citizen service centres). Banerjee said that over Rs 1,200 crore was disbursed through various social security schemes, benefiting millions of residents. "The Khadya Sathi programme reached 12.91 lakh beneficiaries, while Swasthya Sathi covered over 4 lakh people. Additionally, 37,000 land pattas were distributed, including 17,072 land pattas and 12,614 refugee pattas. The Jalswapna project provided drinking water connections to 2.11 lakh households, marking significant progress in infrastructure development," she wrote. "The infrastructure push includes the construction of over 4,266 km of roads under Pathashree scheme, costing approximately Rs 4,000 crore. Additionally, 45 new bridges were built across various rivers at an investment of Rs 150 crore," she wrote. Banerjee claimed that in a significant move for the tea industry, worker wages were increased to Rs 250, making it the highest in India. The Chaa Sundari project provided housing for 2,969 families, with 14,000 more receiving construction assistance. The govt also granted official language status to Rajbanshi and Kamtapuri, bringing the total number of official languages in Bengal to 13. Cultural initiatives included establishing development boards and academies and declaring Thakur Panchanan Barma's birthday a public holiday, said Banerjee. For tribal development, the state passed the Sarna/Sari religion recognition bill and prohibited tribal land transfer to non-tribals. Over 300,000 tribal people now receive the Jai Johar old-age pension, Banerjee added.
