Qatar U16 basketball team to meet Kuwait in 2nd round of Arab Championship

Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar U16 national basketball team will meet Kuwait in the second round of the 22nd Arab U16 Championship at the Cairo Stadium Indoor Halls Complex on Monday at 1pm The tournament being in Cairo, Egypt, from August 10 to 17, 2025, features six teams - Qatar, Bahrain, Tunisia, Kuwait, Algeria, and hosts Egypt. The teams are playing in a single-round-robin format, with the top two advancing to the final and the third- and fourth-placed teams competing for the bronze medal. In their opening match against Bahrain, Qatar displayed a mixed performance. The team started strongly, dominating the first half with a disciplined defense and effective offense. Qatar led 18-15 in the first quarter, showcasing sharp focus and diverse scoring options, including close-range shots and mid-range jumpers. They maintained their momentum in the second quarter, edging out Bahrain 19-17 to lead 37-32 at halftime, thanks to smart passing and controlled tempo. However, Qatar's performance dipped significantly in the second half. Bahrain capitalized on their momentum, outscoring Qatar 30-8 in the third quarter and 28-13 in the fourth, securing a decisive 90-58 victory. Bahrain's relentless defensive pressure and offensive efficiency proved too much for Qatar, who earned one point in the standings, while Bahrain claimed two. Looking ahead, Qatar will face Egypt on Tuesday and take on Algeria on Thursday before concluding their preliminary round against Tunisia on Friday. Saturday will see the final round—featuring the third-place playoff and the championship game is for Sunday. The Qatari delegation is led by Abdullah Sultan Al Jaber, Member of QBF Board of Directors, accompanied by Khaled Al Mughni, Director of Youth National Teams. The Arab U16 Championship was first launched in Saudi Arabia in 1979.
