Head coaches defining the ISL 2024-25 season

New Delhi [India], May 15 (ANI): Head coaches are the cornerstone of any football team, the master strategists and cultural architects. From instilling a winning mentality and nurturing talent to devising tactical game plans and steering their squads toward glory, they are instrumental in defining a team's identity and success, as per the official website of ISL. The Indian Super League (ISL) has seen head coaches from around the globe leave their mark, guiding their teams with tactical acumen and leadership. From Jose Molina's record-breaking campaign with Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) to Jamshedpur FC's (JFC) resurgence under Khalid Jamil, the 2024-25 season has been shaped by the tactical brilliance and unwavering commitment of these figures on the touchline. Jose Molina led Mohun Bagan Super Giant to their first-ever ISL double this season. With several big names in the squad, the Spaniard easily managed the dressing room and guided the Mariners (MBSG) to break numerous league records. Molina's men accumulated 56 points in the 2024-25 Indian Super League season, becoming the first team to cross the 50-point mark in a single campaign. MBSG's defenders scored 14 goals, making them the first club to register 10+ goals by defenders in a single season. The team also scored 52 goals and kept 16 clean sheets, setting new benchmarks in the league. Gerard Zaragoza experienced an eventful campaign with Bengaluru FC (BFC), guiding the team to the playoffs and the ISL Cup final. Despite falling short of silverware, the Blues (BFC) showed steady progress under the Spanish head coach and consistently demonstrated their potential throughout the season. Under Zaragoza's leadership, Bengaluru FC conceded their first goal of the 2024-25 season after 494 minutes of play, becoming the first team to go over 400 minutes from the start of a season without conceding. The Blues' cohesion and lightning-fast transitions made them one of the most formidable sides this season. Khalid Jamil has proved his mettle time and again. The Indian head coach guided Jamshedpur FC to a top-six finish for the first time in three years and led them to the semi-finals--a remarkable achievement for a team that had spent recent seasons in the bottom half of the table. Under Jamil's guidance, Jamshedpur FC delivered impressive performances, relying on tactical awareness, particularly on home soil. The Men of Steel (JFC) showcased structure, discipline, and a resolute mentality under pressure. Their commitment to an old-school style of football, infused with renewed vigour, set them apart in the league and laid the foundation for something greater in the future. Manolo Marquez's men finished second to MBSG in the league standings, but FC Goa (FCG) were in the race for the League Shield throughout the season. Their consistent attacking dominance was evident as they scored in 23 consecutive league matches, becoming the first team to achieve this feat and setting a new benchmark in the league. FC Goa stood out for their versatility and emphasis on collective strength over individual brilliance. Under Marquez's guidance, several emerging talents like Brison Fernandes, Ayush Chhetri, and Hrithik Tiwari made their mark in the league, playing key roles for the Gaurs throughout the campaign. AIFF wants Jamil to take charge of India U-23 team, coach undecided

Khalid Jamil has received rich praise after taking Jamshedpur to ISL playoffs Panaji: The All India Football Federation ( AIFF ) has approached Jamshedpur FC coach Khalid Jamil with an offer to prepare the under-23 team for next year's Asian Games and the AFC U-23 Asian Cup, qualifiers for which will be held in Sept. The AIFF wants to start early with the preparations and has identified Jamil, contracted with Jamshedpur, as the best man for the job. Should be take up the job, he will be allowed to coach club and country. 'The AIFF has spoken to us as well as Khalid, but nothing has been decided,' Jamshedpur CEO Mukul Choudhari told TOI on Monday. 'The decision has been left to Khalid. He has to decide. His stint with us has been outstanding.' According to sources, Jamil is yet to make up his mind. AIFF officials will need to convince India's best coach of the under-23 national team assignment's importance. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Cost Of Amusement Park Equipment From Mexico Might Surprise You Amusement Park Equipment | search ads Click Here Undo Jamil has received rich praise from all quarters after taking Jamshedpur to the playoffs in the Indian Super League (ISL), with limited budget. Players too have improved under his tutelage. If proof was needed that the team's performance in the ISL – where they lost narrowly against eventual champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the semis – was no flash in the pan, Jamshedpur made it to the final of the Super Cup for the first time. 'In terms of results, he is the best Indian coach, without any doubt,' said national team and FC Goa coach Manolo Marquez after his side defeated Jamshedpur in the Super Cup final. 'People can like or not like his style of football, but the results are there. I don't even need to speak. He (Jamil) was champion with Aizawl in I-League. He played the ISL playoff with Northeast United. He played the playoff this season with Jamshedpur. He has worked with teams that don't have too much budget.' The men's football event at the Asian Games is an under-23 affair with each team allowed a field a maximum of three players above the age category. The draw for the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers will be held on May 29 in Kuala Lumpur. The competition will follow a single round-robin format at centralised venues from Sept 1 to Sept 9. Eleven group winners and four best second-placed teams will advance to the final tournament in Saudi Arabia in 2026.

Jamil looks to the future as wait for second trophy continues

Bhubaneswar: A few days back he was on the stage collecting his award as AIFF's Men's Coach of the Year with a quiet appearance and quick departure to join his wards at the team hotel, on the eve of their crucial Kalinga Super Cup summit clash. And on Saturday, Khalid Jamil came to the press conference alone, following Jamshedpur FC 's 0-3 thrashing at the hands of champions FC Goa , giving his disappointed players a break and taking the responsibility for the defeat on himself, in the inimitable style that the 48-year-old has come to be known for. "Everyone of us was desperate to win this tournament and all of them are very sad right now. But I told them that everyone tried. We'll have to bounce back from this disappointment. But I don't have any doubt in the commitment from the players," Khalid said at the media interaction. It was also a frustrating end to Jamil's wait for his second trophy as a coach, having guided Aizawl FC to the historic I-League title in 2017. But even his counterpart in the final, Manolo Marquez, was quick to point out Jamil's stature as an Indian coach and the impossible things that he has achieved in his coaching journey so far. "The results are there for all to see. I don't even need to speak. He (Jamil) was champion with Aizawl in I-League. He played the ISL playoff with Northeast United. He played the playoff this season with Jamshedpur," explained the now full-time Indian national coach, whose FC Goa were beaten in both legs of ISL by Jamshedpur this season. "He has worked with teams that don't have too much and are without much budget. People can talk about liking or not liking his style of football. But the results are there at this moment. In terms of results, he is the best Indian coach, without any doubt," reiterated the former Goa coach. Breaking from his usual tactic of playing a lone striker, Jamil started Saturday's final with a 4-4-2 formation — with Jordan Murray joining Javier Siverio upfront and Javi Hernandez dropping a bit behind. He also gave Jamshedpur local boy Nikhil Barla a start and he did his job down the right flank. However, Borja Herrera's opener changed the tone of the summit clash. "That's why we substituted (at change of ends) and used Imran (Khan) and (Mohammed) Sanan for more crosses. Not just high crosses, but low crosses. Unfortunately, they scored the second goal from a lovely shot from Borja. And then the third goal from the counter," Jamil explained his tactics throughout the 90 minutes. "But we needed to be clinical. And today, you can say that it was not our day." However, the most decorated Indian coach in the country is not ready to cry over spilt milk and is already looking to find the best mix of players for the upcoming season. "Now, we must think about the next season. Which players should we keep, and who needs to be released. This is how we can rectify the mistakes of this season and build a good solid team for the next," the coach of the year signed off.

Goa and Jamshedpur face off for golden ticket to Asia

Bhubaneswar: After 13 days of relentless action, 15 contenders have been reduced to two, come the final day of the Kalinga Super Cup 2025. The 2019 champions FC Goa will take on first-time finalists Jamshedpur FC in the summit clash on Saturday. The winner of the match will also qualify for the 2025-26 AFC Champions League Two Preliminary Round. On one hand are FC Goa, aiming not only to become the first team to win this trophy twice but also to end their four-year absence from continental football. The Gaurs' sole campaign in Asia came in the 2021 AFC Champions League. On the other hand, Jamshedpur FC are in uncharted territory, ending a run of two semi-final losses in the Super Cup to reach their first-ever final in any competition in the club's eight-year history. Having missed out on qualifying for the AFC Champions League after a play-off defeat in 2023, the Men of Steel now have another golden chance to earn their maiden ticket to Asia. 'For us, it's very important because it would be the first time that we qualify for an Asian competition, so we'll try to give our best,' said Jamshedpur FC head coach Khalid Jamil in the pre-match press conference on Friday His counterpart, FC Goa head coach Manolo Marquez, said, 'When you have this opportunity (to qualify for Asia), obviously you have to be very motivated. FC Goa already played in the Champions League four years ago. Jamshedpur never did. But both teams would want to make it to this competition.' It would be the fourth meeting between FC Goa and Jamshedpur FC in the Super Cup, making it the joint most-played fixture in the tournament's history. If the past three matches, where a staggering 21 goals were scored, are anything to go by, one can definitely expect fireworks on Saturday as well. The final will be telecast live on Star Sports 3 and streamed on JioHotstar
