Haitham bin Saqr attends opening of 'Kalba Rowing Championship'

Championship overview Aisha Shahdad, General Supervisor of the championship, confirmed that many governmental and private institutions are participating in the event. Organised by the Eastern Kalba Channel in cooperation with Sharjah Sports Channel, the competition will last for three days with 50 boats representing various regions of the UAE and Gulf Cooperation Council countries. Heritage village and cultural activities The opening ceremony featured a tour of the heritage village, which showcases various marine life elements like a fish market, grilling stations, salt cutting, and a popular café. The village sees broad participation from both governmental and private institutions. Promoting traditional marine sports The championship aims to promote traditional marine sports and preserve the region's heritage. Activities include workshops on marine crafts such as gargoor, shosh, and leikh, alongside a 'Barza' council for discussions on marine heritage. Heritage competitions and fishing contest In addition to the main rowing event, there are several heritage competitions, including tug of war, wrestling, burlap races, and the game of Meet. A fishing competition for Kalba fishermen is also held, with valuable prizes for the winners. Notable attendees The opening ceremony was attended by His Excellency Khalid Jassim Al Midfa, Chairman of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority; His Excellency Mohammed Hassan Khalaf, Director General of the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority; Salem Al Ghaithi, Director of the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority; Ismail Al Hosani, Director of Al Sharqiya Channel from Kalba, as well as other directors from radio stations and government representatives.

Sharjah Championships and Nations Cup kick off tomorrow

The event begins with the third edition of the Sharjah Four-Star Show Jumping Championship and will take place at the indoor and outdoor arenas of the Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Club, running until 2 February. Sponsors and supporters This year's edition is sponsored by Longines, Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sharjah Equine Hospital, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, Sharjah Islamic Bank, Sharjah Sports Council, Carrefour, Majestic, Sharjah Sports TV, and Centro Sharjah. Three-Star and Five-Star Championships The championships also include the 25th Sharjah Three-Star International Show Jumping Championship, scheduled from 6 to 9 February. The event concludes with the Sharjah Ruler's Cup Five-Star Show Jumping Championship, which serves as the final qualification round for the 2025 Show Jumping World Cup, where the top five riders from Regional Group VII will be announced. Exciting competitions and award pool The Sharjah Nations Cup International Show Jumping Championship will feature six international four-star competitions with a total award pool of €235,000, alongside six one-star competitions offering €14,500 in prizes. Additionally, there will be two one-star competitions for young show jumping horses (ages 6–7) from Regional Group VII, with prizes of AED 8,000, as well as two youth competitions with €13,600 in prizes, two junior competitions with €11,000, and two children's competitions with €8,000. Boosting Sports Tourism Khalid Jassim Al Midfa, Chairman of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, reaffirmed the authority's commitment to supporting sports events as part of its strategy to enhance Sharjah's position as a leading tourism destination. He highlighted the role of such championships in developing the sports tourism sector and providing diverse experiences for visitors. Strengthening Sharjah's Global Presence Al Midfa also emphasised that sponsoring the Sharjah Show Jumping Championships 2025 aligns with the authority's efforts to foster collaboration among various entities, reinforcing Sharjah's standing on both local and international levels.
