Urban solutions; green world documentary spotlights Sharjah
Visual storytelling of Sharjah's environmental transformation The film spotlights the dramatic environmental changes led by BEEAH under the guidance of Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. In a short span, BEEAH has become a globally recognised name in waste management and sustainable solutions, diverting 90% of waste from landfills and turning it into construction materials, fuel, and clean energy. The film also covers the company's work to reduce carbon emissions and build a low-waste society, as well as its initiatives to protect wildlife and marine life at local, regional, and global levels. It also highlights the collaboration between BEEAH and Sharjah's Environment and Protected Areas Authority, capturing joint efforts such as seabed clean-ups in Khorfakkan and the large-scale reforestation of Al Muntather Reserve, which saw wide community participation, including numerous government bodies, university students, and schoolchildren. Emirati production with a global signature Produced by the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority in partnership with the Sharjah Government Media Bureau and BEEAH, the film was developed by the UAE-based company East Productions in collaboration with Canada's Gryphon Productions. Ashraf Ali served as the film's executive producer, with direction by renowned filmmaker Peter von Puttkamer, an award-winning specialist in wildlife, anthropology, and biographical documentaries. The cinematography and lighting were led by Todd Southgate and Tim Small, known for filming in extreme environments from the Amazon to the Australian deserts, with Sharjah becoming a valuable addition to their portfolio. The production team also included coordinators, underwater camera operators, and drone pilots — combining local talent with international expertise. Nine months of creative documentation Filming took nine months, covering a variety of locations in Sharjah — from waste management and recycling plants to BEEAH's iconic headquarters. The documentary also includes stunning water footage from Khorfakkan, capturing underwater clean-up campaigns, live turtle monitoring on beaches, and exploration of mangrove reserves and coral reef planting. It also documents conservation efforts for endangered species such as the Arabian leopard, Arabian tahr, sand gazelles, and the collared kingfisher, using high-quality aerial, terrestrial, and underwater cinematography with state-of-the-art equipment. A model for environmental documentation According to Mohammed Hassan Khalaf, Director General of Sharjah Broadcasting Authority and executive producer, Urban Solutions; Green World serves as an inspiring visual record of Sharjah's environmental commitment, supported by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi. The documentary reflects the emirate's aim to pursue sustainable development that safeguards natural resources for future generations. He added that the authority's vision is to produce purposeful, insightful media content that reflects Sharjah's cultural and human values, showcasing its accomplishments in various fields. The aim is to use media not just as a means to report events but as a tool for shaping awareness and encouraging positive change — a goal the authority continues to pursue with content that carries knowledge and human depth, placing Sharjah on the local, regional, and global media map. Building a sustainable future Khaled Al Huraimel, CEO and Vice Chairman of BEEAH — a strategic partner in the project — thanked the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority for its key role in producing a documentary of this calibre. He said the film represents BEEAH's vision of turning environmental challenges into real opportunities for green growth and innovation. It is not only a record of the company's achievements but also a call for collective action toward a cleaner environment and a more responsible society. It promotes awareness and dialogue around the importance of eco-friendly urban practices and supports the shift to a green economy and sustainable cities for future generations. Sharjah, he noted, stands as a global model in smart waste management and renewable energy. A strategic and meaningful partnership Tariq Saeed Allay, Director General of the Sharjah Government Media Bureau — also a strategic partner in the film — highlighted how the documentary underscores Sharjah's genuine commitment to sustainable development. He noted the importance of quality media in communicating impactful experiences that deserve to reach audiences locally and globally. He also praised the bureau's ongoing partnership with Sharjah Broadcasting Authority, which continues to produce exceptional work documenting Sharjah's environmental accomplishments and opening a window onto the green future the emirate envisions. He added that the film reflects Sharjah's commitment to development that puts the environment at the heart of its priorities, aligning with its broader goal to build smart, environmentally balanced cities. The Media Bureau sees media as a vital partner in creating positive change and is proud to have contributed to a production that delivers an educational and human message that transcends borders. A highly anticipated premiere Urban Solutions; Green World translates the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi — that urban development can align with environmental protection — into compelling visual storytelling. The film is expected to have broad exposure on local and international platforms, sending a message from Sharjah to the world about sustainability and innovation. The film will premiere in two parts, dubbed in Arabic, on Sharjah TV and the Maraya platform on Friday and Saturday, 9 and 10 May, at 2:00 PM.
