Jordan is strategic gateway for Brazil's investments in region', says JCC president

AMMAN — President of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC) Khalil Hajj Tawfiq on Sunday emphasised the importance of positioning the Kingdom as a strategic hub and gateway for Brazilian companies seeking to participate in regional reconstruction projects, particularly in Syria. Speaking at the Jordanian-Brazilian Economic Forum on Sunday, Hajj Tawfiq highlighted that Jordan is implementing an Economic Modernization Vision, initiated under Royal directives, aimed at building a national economy rooted in growth, sustainability, and improving citizens' quality of life. He explained that the modernisation vision focuses on several promising sectors, including food industries, pharmaceuticals, garments, energy, trade, mining, tourism and information technology. He affirmed that these sectors offer abundant opportunities that align with investors' ambitions, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. The participants of the forum included, business leaders and executives from various economic sectors in both countries, as well as officials from Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, the investment promotion agency of São Paulo State. Hajj Tawfiq described the forum as a "unique" opportunity to explore "promising" investment prospects in Jordan, while also serving as a gateway to the Brazilian market, one of the largest in Latin America and the world, characterised by a "massive" consumer base and "advanced" sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, technology and renewable energy. President of the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, William Adib Dib Junior, said the launch of the multi-sector delegation to Jordan marks the beginning of a "significant" new Brazilian engagement that reflects the depth of relations based on cooperation and integration. 'This initiative is the fruit of joint cooperation between the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, the Brazilian Embassy in Amman, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and the Invest SP agency of São Paulo State, in collaboration with the Jordan Chamber of Commerce and the Jordanian Ministry of Investment, in addition to the participating Brazilian companies,' Junior said. He said that trade relations between the two countries have spanned decades, built on strategic integration and mutual support. Junior added that Brazil plays a "central" role in enhancing food security in Jordan by exporting essential foodstuffs, while Jordan supplies Brazil with fertilisers that support the global competitiveness of its agricultural sector. He also noted that bilateral trade between the two countries reached about $650 million in 2024. Brazilian exports increased by 34 per cent, reaching $540 million, the highest figure recorded since 2013, while Jordanian exports to Brazil also achieved "notable" figures, reflecting the growing balance in trade between the two sides, Petra, reported.

Jordanian economic delegation to make first official visit to Syria since regime downfall

AMMAN — A high-level Jordanian economic delegation representing the commercial and service sectors is set to begin an official working visit to Syria on May 26. The two-day visit aims to explore future of bilateral economic relations between private sectors from both countries, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. President of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC) Khalil Hajj Tawfiq said, 'This is the first official visit of the commercial and service sector under the JCC, and [is organised] in coordination with the Foreign Ministry, the Jordanian Embassy in Damascus, and the Federation of Syrian Chambers of Commerce. 'The visit marks the largest private-sector delegation to Syria since the fall of the previous regime,' he said. The delegation will include presidents of Jordan's chambers of commerce and representatives from all commercial and service sectors. He added that the delegation will hold extensive talks with Syrian ministers of economy, trade, and services, as well as with the president and members of the Syrian Chambers of Commerce Federation and prominent figures from Syria's private sector. He indicated that the visit will include discussions on establishing a joint Jordanian-Syrian Business Council and agreeing to organise a business forum in the near future in Amman, with the aim of laying the foundation for a new phase in economic ties. The Jordanian delegation, Hajj Tawfiq said, aims to support Syria in rebuilding its economy, especially in light of the easing of sanctions and Syria's reintegration into the Arab and international arenas. 'The Jordanian private sector, in line with Jordan's official position in support of Syria, is committed to standing by the Syrian private sector and helping it fulfil its aspirations for a strong, open economy, particularly one that is connected with Jordan,' Hajj Tawfiq said. He added that the new phase of economic cooperation requires official institutions on both sides to work towards eliminating all obstacles that hinder the smooth flow of trade in both directions, praising the facilitation measures Jordan provides to Syrians at border crossings. Hajj Tawfiq also emphasised the need to establish trade and investment partnerships between companies in both countries, strengthen transit trade, promote mutual visits by economic delegations, organise joint forums and exhibitions, and exchange information on available investment opportunities. According to data from the Amman Chamber of Commerce, Jordan's exports to Syria in the first two months of 2025 reached JD35.4 million, compared to JD8.3 million in imports. © Copyright The Jordan Times. Jordanian economic delegation to visit Syria in landmark trip since regime change

Passenger vehicles wait in line to enter Syria after the Jaber/Nasib crossing between Jordan and Syria (JT file) AMMAN — A high-level Jordanian economic delegation representing the Kingdom's commercial and service sectors will make an official two-day visit to Syria starting May 26, marking the first such visit since the fall of the previous Syrian regime. The delegation, organised under the Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC) and in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Jordanian Embassy in Damascus, and the Federation of Syrian Chambers of Commerce, aims to explore prospects for enhanced economic cooperation between the two countries' private sectors, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra. 'This is the first official commercial and service sector visit under the JCC, and it represents the largest private-sector delegation to Syria in over a decade,' said JCC President Khalil Hajj Tawfiq. The delegation will include presidents of Jordan's chambers of commerce and representatives from various sectors. During the visit, Jordanian officials will meet with Syrian ministers of economy, trade, and services, as well as prominent figures from the Syrian private sector. According to Hajj Tawfiq, discussions will focus on establishing a joint Jordanian-Syrian Business Council and organising a bilateral business forum in Amman aimed at fostering deeper economic integration. The JCC president said the visit reflects Jordan's commitment to supporting Syria's economic recovery, especially amid regional efforts to ease sanctions and reintegrate Syria into the Arab and international community. 'The Jordanian private sector stands ready to assist its Syrian counterpart in building a strong, open economy, especially one that is closely connected with Jordan,' Hajj Tawfiq noted. He underscored the need for both governments to remove trade barriers and facilitate smoother cross-border commerce. He also called for the development of investment partnerships, increased transit trade, joint business events, and the exchange of investment information. Figures from the Amman Chamber of Commerce show that Jordanian exports to Syria reached JD35.4 million in the first two months of 2025, while imports stood at JD8.3 million. DaifAllah Abu Aqouleh, president of the Association of Owners of Clearance and Transport Companies, said any concrete move to lift economic sanctions on Syria would directly benefit Jordan's logistics and transport sectors. 'Syria remains a vital transit route for Jordanian exports to Lebanon, Turkey, and Europe,' he said. 'Lifting restrictions would reduce shipping costs, boost trade via the Jaber-Nassib border crossing, and revive Jordan's freight industry.' Abu Aqouleh added that improved trade flows could create new jobs in logistics, attract investment in storage and support services, and enhance tourism between the two nations. He also pointed to the potential for increased competitiveness of Jordanian ports as regional trade routes reopen. 'Jordan can play a pivotal role in Syria's reconstruction through its logistics and transport infrastructure,' he said, calling for a joint public-private strategic plan to seize emerging opportunities. In a major development on Tuesday, former U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking from Riyadh, announced the lifting of long-standing Assad-era sanctions on Syria. Calling the sanctions 'brutal and crippling,' Trump said it was now Syria's 'time to shine,' and that easing restrictions would 'give them a chance at greatness.' The Syrian Foreign Ministry welcomed the decision, calling it a 'pivotal turning point' that would help restore stability, attract investment, and accelerate the country's reintegration into the global economy
